DIY Fish tank cooler, mini frige can it work?

I have a small tank, 12 gallons (46 L) and I've seen a mini fridge being used as a chiller around quite a bit. But some say it doesn't work for bigger tanks. I was wondering if my tank could be cooled with a mini fridge as my temperatures here in Australia get very high and I'm hardly keeping the temperature at a safe level. Thanks
