A little background on the tank.
I've had the 75 running for a few years. The only thing I've tested for were nitrates and they were always around 40ppm. Three months ago I decided to make the switch from tap water to distilled. I knew the tank was had phosphates due to the algae growing on the back glass.
I dumped the sand bed that was only about 1/2 inch and began target feeding the clown and coral beauty. As you can see, I have a small bio load. Just for giggles I decide to test nitrates for the first time since the change. The are off the chart...literally.
What gives? The sand bed was cleaned consistently so I wouldn't think that would be the issue. Is this common when rocks leach phosphates?
