Hello All:
I have a 25 gallon sump (maybe 20, not sure) for my 92 gallon tank.
I have the dirty water come into the first baffle through PVC piping that bubbles it up onto baffle #2, and over a filter pad. Then it goes through the filter over bio balls (I have removed half of them, enroute to completing the suggestion of many reefers on here to remove them in total). The water then gets picked up from this baffle and pumped into a media reactor running NPX BioBalls. From there it gets pumped over to the baffle where my skimmer is and goes through a sponge on its way to the return baffle that pumps it back into the DT.
I would like to clean my sump. There is some PhosBan media in the bottom and muck and mire. Not a lot, but some. I also have two little bags of those ceramic filter pellets and a bag of carbon under the bio ball baffle. I have a little bit of macro algae that I bought that did not look good in the DT. I think I need to clean the bottoms of the last two baffles where the skimmer and return are.
Should I empty them? Should I shut off all the pumps? Can I just clean them out with some clean towels while the water is still in them and running, etc.? Does it even matter?
My nitrates run 5-20 depending on distance between water changes. But the OCD in me wants them at 0. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
