Hello everyone,
I apologize this is lengthy...
So it appears I am running into an issue. Like clock work every night starting about 6pm for the last several months I get the formation of many many many bubbles along my sand and live rock. Along with it is this stringy green algae issue that appears to cling to various corals and some actually will accumulate floating at the surface. I have had another tank in the past with Green Hair Algae - this stuff is not the same. Its darker and thicker. It does not cover the rocks like a velvet though.
Up until the end of the summer everything stayed pretty much pristine - I got very little algae growth so in my mind something has changed but I cannot figure out what. As of this fall my T5s were at 18 months so last month I have changed those out.
My water source has not changed since last year. I bought a RO Buddie - I didn't like it so I don't use it and went back to the water source I had always used - though it is not RO/DI - it is spring water. I have used it in this tank for a very long time and very little issues so this spring I went back to it.
I have increased the frequency of my water changes - I used to do about 40 gallons every 4 or 5 weeks, now I am doing 20-25 gallons every week and it doesn't seem to be helping much.
Last few days I have done a bunch of searches here and the accumulations of phosphates sticks in my head or dinoflagellates (sp)? My sand is probably a few years old and the rock is older. When I do water changes I do siphon out the bed but obviously I cannot reach every nook and cranny. I think I get to about 80 %
I feed blender mush or other frozen cubes nightly - once a day - usually just the one cube size
I could change out my sand, and or some of my live rock if I had to - though a concern I would have is my mandarin - I would hate to wreck my pod population. I have several mushrooms that are stuck to a lot of the rock work as well so there's another challenge with changing out the rocks.
I have thought about buying a UV Sterilizer but I haven't done enough research yet to see if it would actually benefit me.
My tank specs are lacking water Parameters. I will post those later tonight.
Thoughts on my dilemma anyone?
And thank you!
