To sump sock or not

I know there's a lot of info on Web about the pros and cons of using a sock in the sump. In my search I haven't found any info in the past couple years . Just wondering if anything has changed between then and now.
Do you run one or is it not worth the extra maintenence.? Or do you run one only during maintenance? How often do you change or clean them? How fast do you think the detritus breaks down and starts to do more harm then good?
