Sump and HOB Skimmer

Hey guys logistical question here.... i am currently running a reef octopus HOB-1000 skimmer that has great reviews. I am in the process of getting rid of my canisters and building a 10 gallon sump and 10 gallon refugium that are connected via bulkheads and pvc. I don't want to have to buy a new skimmer for my sump. Is it worth building the sump for at least more volume? and if so what should i put in the compartment that would typically hold the skimmer?
