Reef Octopus Classic 150int Skimmer

I installed my Reef Octopus Classic 150int Monday and I left the gate wide open only because I watched the video from Coral Vue saying its best to break the skimmer in for a week or more at full open then after the breaking in happens slowly closing the gate to form the head. Is all this necessary and can I start skimming now?
