Hi Everyone,
My 55 gallon tank is 1.5 years old and I am currently in my 4th week of a diatom bloom. I clean and do water changes once a week - normally. Last month I went through 3 weeks of continuous migraines and missed 3 water changes. Afterwards I tested levels and my nitrates were at 160. Yikes! Have never had them above 10 before... I immediately started with water changes over the next few days and got nitrates down to zero. I also replaced all filters and put in new carbon. Didn't lose any fish or corals, however the diatom bloom is in full swing. Here are current levels and more info:
* Ammonia: 0
* Nitrates: 0
* PH: 8.2
*KH: 10
*Phosphate: .25
*Calcium:500
*My canister filter works for up to a 175 gallon tank.
* I'm using distilled water for all water changes.
*Lights (T5 10,000K x2 and T5 Actinic x2) are on for 8-10 hrs.
* Tank has 1 yellow tang, 2 purple fire fish, 1 cardinal, a watchman goby and his pistol shrimp and 1 blue chromis. Also have assorted corals. I have been feeding fish once a day (used to do this twice a day) but haven't seen any kind of difference.
I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure out what is going on. I'm still relatively new to the hobby so I may be missing something obvious. Any suggestions?
