Risks of a Mixed Reef?

I am trying to decide which direction to take my tank if/when I plan to add more coral. I understand all of our corals originate from various different habitats, and have many more needs to fill such as flow, nutrient amounts and types, light, etc.

I have read warnings against mixing reefs, as it is difficult to keep different species satisfied. I am trying to dive more into the specifics of why not. A major topic I have noticed when reading about this subject is different types/amounts of nutrients. Of course, SPS do appreciate the same nutrient conditions Softies may, and Softies may irritate others due to the chemicals released, although I'm not clear on the whole picture.

What exactly do we define as a "mixed reef"? Is it generally mixing SPS, LPS, and Softies? Or is it mixing different biotopes? What are the primary concerns, and did I leave any out? I will leave it to that for now until the conversation begins.

My Tank-

15 gallon, with soft and LPS corals. I do run carbon, and change 30% of the water per week, as that is my primary filtration besides the canister filter.
