Refugium as a display

One of the ideas I would really love to incorporate into my saltwater system is a refugium that is a focal point in its own right. I want it to act not only as a sump with live rock/sand but as a sort of hydroponic planter that is in its own right something to look at.

The tank I have I will not drill. I don't think it would live through it. So instead of a tradition sump. I am hoping to make the refugium slightly above and to the side of the main display. I want to pump up to it and gravity back down to the display tank.

The display tank will be 100 gallons.
How big should the refugium be at a minimum to do any good?
I would like a mangrove as much for looks as anything, but what other macro algae or even semi terrestrial plants could be added to make it look like a planter as opposed to a sump. What about the addition of live rock/sand to it.

My thoughts since I am working with a blank slate is that I would like to make the refugium and main display all on one custom build stand. The refugium will be in the corner so a corner tank would be a good idea. Them main tank is 18" tall so I am thinking making this 18" tall but sitting 1 to 2 inches higher. Making it out of acrylic I am thinking I can make a broad lip on it that will sti over the display tank rim and just spill over into the main tank.

What kind of lighting would be used?
