I got a small goniopora that looked terrific in my LFS's tank. Brought it home and it just doesn't seem happy. At the LFS the polyps were fully extended at about 1.5-2". Since I've had it in my tank the polyps extend maybe 1/4-1/2" and then fully retract again. Most of the time the polyps are fully retracted or close to it.
I thought maybe the flow was too much so I moved it, and it looked better. The polyps were all extended about 1/2" and I thought all was good and it would slowly continue to extend. Nope. Since yesterday morning all the polyps have been fully retracted. So this morning I decided to move it again. I did, and have yet to notice any change.
I'm super frustrated because my params are all really good. Ammonia and nitrate nearly zero (hard to say exactly, but the color is awfully close to the zero color on the testing chart). I don't know my salinity or phosphates or temp. I probably need testers for those and a thermometer.
I've read a lot about goni's and understand they are hard to keep healthy long-term. However, I've read no cases in books or online where the critter struggled like mine seems to be after being introduced in the tank. I'm a noob, but I'm trying hard to do this right, so any input is suggested.
ps: I have 8 fish, an acan, two small zoas and a paly also in the tank (RS650). Everything is thriving. Although I have had 3 or 4 snails die in the last week.
