I have a few threads on my future build, a 100 gallon reef.
I have now a 29 FOWLR. It has appox. 15# of dead base rock and About 12-15 pounds of live rock. But I am not enthused about my live rock. I got about 5# with the tank and bought 9# from the LFS. None of it looks good. No visible life at all; worms, dusters etc. I am having a bit of a nitrate issue so it has a bit of brownish green algae on it. But even then there was/is very little coraline algae. I also bought 10# of live sand.
I am hoping to seed the dead rock for two reasons. I would love to get my total live rock count up to about 60 pounds so I can have a few fish in it without stressing the system. Also I want to use it to seed the 100 gallon. I want to try my hand at making some of my own rock for the 100 gallon and have all the time in the world to cure it out and then slowly seed it. I Would like to rotate dead rock through my 29 every so often and move the newly seeded live rock into the 100.
In doing this I was vaguely aware of aqua cultured live rock. I would love to do my part to save our wild reef ecosystems. I am also aware of the destructive nature of our hobby's demand for live rock. And since I am not at all impressed with what I am getting from my LFS I can't help to look at these US based aquaculture products. I like at least what ARC says they are about. I also like what their product looks like if their pictures accurately represent what you get.
Anybody have experience with them? Is it as nice as it looks? How bad are the negative hitchhikers? Does their premium rock come with at least a few fun surprises like dusters, worms, brittle stars etc. (I secretly wouldn't mind a mantis shrimp although I would have to find a home for him).
