Well i went a whole 2 weeks without a tank and i couldnt stand it anymore.. so i finally started the process. This tank is going at the end of my bed and so far its going well. I bought a shelf for it to sit on and its just the right height. Im using my old sump so it has 1 baffle in it, im going to put a skimmer back there, ato and i wont be doing any hard corals at all i dont think so i hopefully wont need a doser.
The tank is just slightly too big for the stand so i just need to cut a piece of plywood to fit the bottom of the tank and secure it before the tank can be filled. My ro/di unit needs a new flow restrictor so my water making capabilities are limited right now, ill end up making the 20g i need but wont be able to make anymore for about a week.
I have a maxijet 900 im going to use as a return pump, i also have a nano powerhead i may or may not use, ill decide when the sand goes in awhile from now. Ive cemented together a rock structure, the rock and some sand will be put in a tote to cure, once they cure ill leave the sand in the tote and clean/change the water biweekly but the rocks will go into the tank.
I already have livestock.. i bought a 2 pound (wet) piece of live rock from my lfs system, from their fish system so i know its well colonized with bacteria, 2 peppermint shrimps and a yellow watchman goby. I have all of that plus a heater and a nano powerhead in a 5g bucket for the time being. So far ive done 3 tests for ammonia/nitrites and havent tested positive for either so everything seems to be going just as i planned. Ill cut the wood tomorrow to complete the stand, finish making the rest of the water i need tonight and tomorrow the tank should have water, a rock, 2 shrimp and a yellow watchman goby in it.
Im not sure what else ill put into the tank. After tomorrow ill still need to create a return for the maxijet, im aiming for the maxijet to provide all the flow for the tank so hopefully ill be able to create a dual outlet return, if not i do have the nano powerhead to work with. Then all that will be left is to get a skimmer which will probably be a reef octopus bh50 nano skimmer, provide lighting and make a canopy. The canopy will hold the lighting and cover the sump part of the tank so the canopy will be in an L shape. For lighting im really torn on what to do. Part of me wants to do a chinese black box so i dont have to make a fixture then part of me wants to do a led/t5 combo but that would involve me making a led light which would also lead to getting a reefkeeper lite controller to control what i can from it.
The reasoning behind the led/t5 lighting is i have a wild temptation to make this a nem/clown tank. I would have maybe some pulsing xenia, a kenya tree or two after that im not sure what else i want to put in. The other dilema is i do not want to put a pair of clowns in if its not going to be big enough for them to be happy.
So thats the status of my lil project. Ill have some pics here tomorrowand other then that im happy to have a tank again :)
