Adding Salt to a aquarium

Is it safe to add salt to a 45g SW tank while there is live stock in it? I'm talking like enough to bring the specific gravity up by 1-2 points.

20 Gallon Long/Upgrade in the works

I've got a 20 gallon long marine tank with 4 bulb t5 Ho and LED moonlights fixture. 2 ATI white bulbs and 2 Zoo Med actinics (when they go out I will replace with ATI actinics). Fluval hang on the back filter rated for 30 and Remora hang on back protein skimmer rated for 75 gallons. Jebao RW-4 circulation pump on speed 3 and frequency at about %60.

In the midst of putting equipment together for 125 gallon marine tank. Deciding between internal overflow box or hang on back overflow. I don't know if bottom pane of tank is tempered or not which is created the largest problem. Leaning toward hang on back overflow. Once I get past that it's smooth sailing, in comparison.

Hello

I'm in Texas and have a 75 gal fresh and a 20 long salt.
Fish-2 A ocellaris, 2 BG chromis(used to have 3), 1 green clown goby. Coral-Toadstool, kenya tree, zoanthids, pulsing xenia, green nepthea, green star polyps, green montipora, purple polyp birdnest, and hollywood chalice coral.

I'm working to upgrade my 20 to 125 by the Fall. Pumped to on the forum hope to receive and give some sound advice.

29G bare bottom

hey guys,
I created my self introduction thread earlier and figured i would copy my tank specs and water parameters over from that thread:

photos of tank in this thread: http://ift.tt/1FB92cL

as far as tank specs goes:
29 gallon tall fluval tank
cpr bak pak 2r+ (no bio bale) with accela pump (266 gph) skimming wet
fluval c3 power filter (just running polyester, replaced daily)
1 sicce xstream 925 gph wave pump (aimed through rock 'tunnel')
1 sicce xstream 1320 gph wave pump (pointed at skimmer intake)
fluval m24 25W marine and reef led
aquatic life dual 24W t5 with one 420 actinic and one 10000k (i have blue actinic bulbs as spares, wondering if i should switch out the 10000k for one of them, let me know what you guys think)
pvc rock "tunnel" (pics posted in thread linked above)

6-stage RO/DI from filter direct (AR-122 i believe) 120 gpd

water parameters:
nh3/nh4 - BTR (below testable range) test bottoms out at .1 ppm
no2 - BTR test bottoms out at .1 ppm
no3 - BTR test bottoms out at 5 ppm, colour matches the 'zero' square
ph - 8.3-8.5
po4 - BTR (I'm not fooled)
Mg - 1360 ppm
alkalinity - 3.1 Meq/l 8.7 dKH
Ca - 410 ppm
am i missing anything?

tank has been up and running/cycling since april 8th, looking to get a small pair of clownfish perhaps next week (am i nuts? is this a good idea?)

I was told fish should be introduced and then the tank allowed to cycle again if need be before thinking about introducing corals, what are your opinions?

currently the only livestock in the tank is bacteria and some hitch hikers from the live rock (about 60 percent dry caribsea life rock and 40 percent LR from the local stores tanks). brittle stars and such.

Another New Guy

Hi,

I've been doing this for about four months now and thus far everything has been going somewhat as expected bar the occasional "OMG what is that" moment.

I have a 50g glass bare bottom. LED lighting, Remora skimmer and spray bar set up. I have several different soft corals (leather, GSP, Zoa) and a couple LPS corals (a green Torch and a Duncan). I also have a Clown mated pair, two Wrasse', two Cardinals and an Orchid Dotty Back (love that guy, such a cool color). Really want to have a Tridacnid clam one day.

Looking forward to learning a lot more about this hobby.

Thanks for having me.

Think I'm gonna try the DIY overflow...

For my 36 bow. How does one come up with the correct size return pump? I'm going to use 3/4 pvc so I can get the recommended 3-5 times running through the sump. And please enlighten me, if I make a refugium then that does away with the need for bio balls, correct?

Cyanobacteria?

Hey, I hope someone can help, I have this reddish stringy algae growing all over my tank, its just finished a month or two of cycling all that I have in there is a cleaner shrimp and two small turbo snails, does this look like cyanobacteria? and any advice on getting rid? thank you x

First Frag Swap

Thinking about going to this frag swap.

http://ift.tt/1QQ4MKK

I live in Las Vegas and have never been to a frag swap, if I were to purchase some frags what would be the best way to transport them back to Vegas, it is about a 4ish hour Drive. What should I expect at this event?

hello everybody.

hey there,

I've been lurking on TRT for several months now reading everything i can find written by geoff, spanky, and several other members who are worth mentioning, but whos names escape me currently and I feel more or less ready to start my endeavor into reef keeping. Its probably time to introduce myself before i start asking too many questions (hopefully not).

My names Sean, I'm Canadian born and raised, but currently living in northern Washington state. I will be moving to Vancouver BC shortly however I spend a great deal of time in Washington and will likely continue to do so

I have previous experience with freshwater fish keeping, specifically African Cichlids (mostly Mbuna), I currently maintain a 75 gallon Cichlid tank.

i recently set up a 29 gallon bare bottom salt water tank (my first SW) planning to keep LPS and some SPS; though that may tip towards more SPS. It's been set up since the 8th of April, no livestock yet aside from hitchhikers on the couple pieces of LR in the tank. ill see if I can figure out how to upload a photo of the tank in a moment.

Do you think parasites die out?

First I would like to say, this is NOT a quarantine vs no QT discussion. Please leave your thoughts on how everything should be QT'ed, treated, observed, ect.. (or not) on the page you just came from. Accidents do happen. And no my tank did not accidentally get ich (that i know of). Thank You.

Do you guys think that parasites that we can control with good nutrition, a stress free environment and proper husbandry (and uv) can be naturally riddin from our systems?

an example

Such as you just put that last fish into your tank and some how, some way he had ich, despite your best efforts to prevent it. Do you think after years of running a very healthy tank our inhabitants can build up an immunity so well that ich just cannot get what it needs to survive and will die out?

Other parasites?

Father son hobby. 36 gallon bow front.

Figured I'd go ahead and do one of these to kinda keep a journal of the screw ups I'll make. lol

I picked up an Aqueon 36 bow front from Petdumb for my sons 5th birthday. He loves his 10 gallon FW and I've always wanted to get into the SW hobby so here we are. We started out with the HOB filter and heater that came with the setup, 40lbs live sand, a cheap Walmart power head, and about 12lbs cured LR from the LFS. Shortly after added another identical HOB filter and a slice of raw MahiMahi to get the tank cycling.
Fast forward about two weeks and I hadn't seen a trace of ammonia or nitrite, but thought I was seeing nitrate. I was also getting little white things that looked like 1/32 long hairs on almost all the rocks. Still to be safe I left it alone not wanting to do any harm to anything. Another week goes by and one morning I go in my sons room to wake him up and look in the tank. I see little almost microscopic white things all over the glass on one side of the tank that I later found out were copepods. The next day, which was this past Sunday, I tested the water again with great results and decided to get a small CUC in there with a hardy fish.
My son defiantly wanted a "Nemo" so we got a little false perc, 3 hermit crabs, 3 snails, and more LR cured with coraline algae all over it. We got home and got "Nemo" drip acclimated and into the tank along with his buddies. Now Ethan sees him swimming around in there and lols at me and says "I know what I want to call him dad. I'll call him Nemo." I knew that was coming...
Any Who that night I got on Amazon and ordered a Seio p1000 circulation pump and a magnet veggie clip. Monday I picked up some mysis shrimp & pellet food from Petco and tried feeding "Nemo" some shrimp. He ate very little but I figured all was okay. Tuesday the Amazon box awaited me when I got home from work and in went the new CP and man what a difference. I went ahead and got another one coming I liked it so much, but I noticed Nemo was not swimming much, just kinda hanging out down by the sand. I tried feeding him again, this time a little nori we have to make sushi with. He nibbled for about 5-10 seconds and was done, never really leaving the bottom. I get home today and same thing. I try to give him a few pellets but nothing. So I wanted to move the CP to a different spot and after I do it I see Nemo has moved. I go looking for him and just catch him backing into a small cave made by the love rock. I tested the water and was at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and about 10-15 ppm nitrate. I have some water mixing now for a water change tomorrow, but at this point I'm a little worried for him. I'm hoping he's just lonely, as tomorrow I'm going to get him a friend. Also ordered an AI Prime and mount today that is due to be here on Friday.
I feel I'm leaving something out but am really tired. I will post up pics tomorrow and update how all goes at the LFS for a friend for Nemo.

Until next time...

Does anyone use the JBJ Ocean Stream pumps?

Hello all!

I was looking for a good pump for my Q tank, and I came across the JBJ Ocean Stream OS-101. It's a 500 gph propeller style pump that would be perfect for my little 10.

I got it today and I can't help but notice that it Looks like the piece that attaches the pump to the magnet is made of metal. It looks like a piece of metal threaded rod. It does appear to have some coating.

I was wondering if anyone uses this pump, and if you had any trouble with this part rusting or anything?

How do I know if I have the Best water flow in my tank?

I have a 55gal fish only tank.....My question is im not sure if the water flow in my tank is good enough

I have to powerheads that are 1050 gph.

Sorry I'm late :D

hey guys just wanting to tell you I'm back :) the only reason I haven't been on is because it has been holidays and I have been camping for a few weeks. I love the new style of the forum I got quite a surprise when I came on, so there we have it I'm back.
And my tanks going well too ;)

Skimmer decisions

I have a 60 gal display with a 25 gallon sump. I've posted in here a couple of times but I'm just going to buy a new skimmer instead of searching my soul out on Craigslist. I am going to set it up as a reef but I do want to have fish in it too. I'm not too experienced with these brands as I have only owned a sea clone 100 on another 60 gallon with a canister filter (yes I know, awful). Looking for any help I can receive.

I'm looking at a couple of skimmers
--Bubble magus curve 7 or 9
--Aqua Maxx EM200
--Aqua Max ConeS CO-2 or 3

Any other suggestions or comments are welcomed!
Thanks!
Gary

Help! Is this bivalve dangerous?

I found this (large) bivalve in an amazing zoa colony. Is it reef safe? Should it be removed?

The colony is currently being dipped in coralrx- will that kill the bivalve and require it's removal? (So it doesn't rot)

Sump for a 29 gallon

Hey y'all sump question. Petco's $1 a gallon sale has got me thinking about building a sump for my 29 gallon. From the research I have been doing it seams that a 10 gallon tank would be sufficient for my DT size. I'm thinking of a rather simple setup, over flow into a filter sock, through a baffle into a second chamber with the skimmer, heater, maybe a chunk or two of Live Rock, then through a bubble trap to the return pump. My question is, how would I go about figuring out in the event of a power outage how much water I can expect to flow down to the sump? is this based purely on where the overflow site? My tank is tempered so I cant drill it and will have to use an external over flow. Sorry if this is a n00b topic!

New Zoa keeper

Maybe a simple question but i'm new to Zoanthids / reef in general. I'm to the point that my new 90 is stable ( which i know is relative ). I'm looking to start adding some Zoa's. My question is as I get frags / pieces / colonies should I leave them on the plug and place them in position or should I remove them from the plug and place them directly on the rock? Thx in advance for your feedback...

Sump Configuration

I have a new 130 gal tank I am about to put in. I have never used a sump. I have a canister on my 75 gal now. What is the best configuration for this sump and what are the holes in the baffle for.

10 gallon lighting suggestion

Hello,

I have a 10 gallon salt water tank that is housing some pulsing Xenia along with some orange and green mushrooms. This is a normal size rectangular, 24" wide, tank that I am using to store some coral and a couple of clown fish until I can get my 90 gallon up and running. I am using a power compact fixture along with a T5 fixture which is placed on the tank. The power compact is my white light while the T5 has actinic lights in it. In the last week or so the coral has stopped growing and seems to be slowly closing. I am using a HOB AquaClear filter on the tank. I know the bulbs are old and I was wondering if I should just replace the fixtures or replace the bulbs. Since this is just a temporary set up I was wondering if I could use a 50/50 compact bulb and get rid of the T5 fixture to give me more room on the tank or should I just replace the fixtures or replace the bulbs in both fixtures. Again, I am trying to save as much money as I can right now so I can get the equipment I need for my 90 gallon set up.

Thanks.

leaking glass tank

Wasnt really sure where to put this one, but i have a 40b glass that has developed a small leak. Its manageable, but want to be able to repair it before it starts to cause any damage to my stand ( not sure if it is or not yet, cant see under the tank). Can this be done without a teardown? I really dont feel like dealing with all that work!

Thanks.

Bubbles coming out of LR/ sand

I've noticed over the last few days that there are little bubbles coming out of my LR/ sand. I'm not really sure what's causing it- I have a new tank that had finished cycling and is in the brown Algea stage. Is this a natural thing? I just think it's odd that it's just started happening recently. Anyone else get this?

Opinions please.

Got my Seio p1000 in the mail today and am wondering about placement and aim. I have it about mid depth on the right side aimed at the bow in the front. This is a 36 gal bow btw. Please ignore the cloudiness as I accidentally pulled the magnet of and the CP fell to aim right at the sand creating a sandstorm. I was considering ordering another p1000 for the other side. Overkill?

bright lights! difference between quad t5 ho bulbs and led lights

Hello all I'm trying to figure out which is better or brighter, t5 ho quad bulbs or

led lights? I heard that the led lights use less energy and arent as hot but which

is brighter and for a price range of no more than 250$ for a 24" system. I had

a deep blue solarmax xtreme t5 quad h.o lighting system, which was very good

for the first 15 months and then it kicked the bucket just like the one before it.

I hate that this system isnt reliable but when it worked it was great. With all

that said, I'm looking for something as bright as that or better.

Peacock Mantis shrimp help/question - is this tank okay?

Hi all,

New to the forum and new to saltwater tanks as well. I have mucho experience with freshwater tanks, All kinds of fish from piranha to goldfish and everything in between, but have just recently upgraded to my first saltwater tank. Have wanted to for some time now.

So I have wanted to get a peacock mantis for years now, and decided to take the first step in doing so (hopefully)

So, I asked the guy at he store who seemed very knowledgeable about peacock mantis requirements, as he had owned multiple peacocks since his youth.

He said the tank size I got is fine for a mantis, but it would only be an appropriate size for JUST the mantis, nothing more. I purchased some yellow tailed damsels, as i heard they help bring the water in line correctly (again, I am completely new to saltwater ANYTHING, forgive my lack of correct terms...)

So here is the tank:

So, I have been researching for days now to make sure I am doing everything right. The tank I have has a skimmer and all the trimmings, but after doing some research, I am worried about the tank size. I keep hearing and reading tons of different stuff...some people say 5- 10 gal is fine if done right, others say 20 and some say 40! mine is a 14.

I searched high and low until I found a rock that was very tunnel/cave like, it goes back 6 inch and is sitting on about 3-4 inch of sand/rock. The rest of the tank is just 2 rocks at the back and a big open space.

I lined the top of the sand with a ton of live rocks, as I read peacocks like to build openings and closings for their cave.

I put in some purple rocks with them (forgot the name, sorry you guys must hate me lol) Got a PH testing kit and salinity kit.

I know the damsels will get most likely killed, I knew that buying them, I just wanted to make sure the levels in the tank were right or as best as possible.

So, is this tank okay for a peacock mantis shrimp? If i get a small guy will he grow to the size of the tank? Is it okay to get for now but might need to upgrade tanks in a year or two?

Sorry for all the questions....like I said I am pretty new to all this, and want to make sure I do as much right as possible.

Gourmet Grazer Seaweed Feeder

Gourmet Grazer – Feeding is Now a Snap!

Angels, Tangs, Butterflies, Molllies and many other freshwater and marine fish are natural “pickers”. They graze 90% of their day picking at the surfaces of wood, corals and rock. It is important that they are offered plenty of seaweed and algae throughout the day. This will strengthen their immune system, reduce aggression and improve their overall health.

Traditional and Untraditional seaweed feeding tools have used suction cups, clips and rubber bands that held seaweed with one point of contact and if not secured properly, had the chance of detaching wasting the food and polluting your aquarium.

The Patent-Pending Gourmet Grazer is a magnetic mounted, snap lock feeder that secures seaweed in place by having contact all around the perimeter and will promote the natural picking process and allows your fish to simultaneously graze throughout the day.

Just open, insert any size seaweed and snap close. The magnet-mount allows for easy insertion and control, keeping your hands dry and food secured!

FEATURES:
  • For Fresh and Saltwater Fish (Herbivores and Carnivores)
  • Can hold up to 10 sheets of precut seaweed
  • Reduces Waste and Maintains Water Quality
  • Feed Multiple Fish Simultaneously
  • Can be placed vertically or horizontally
  • Low Profile
  • Magnetic Mounted
  • Promotes Natural Picking
  • Durable PVC Construction
  • Snap-Lock Security

giving up?

Fellows , my tank is been running for 4 1/2 months all "small fish" doing good ,I introduced a lemon peel from a reputable Lfs and die with in a week, 3 weeks ago I introduced a kole tang from another reputable lfs and as soon I acclimated I noticed white spots treat it for Ich , wasn't Ich and just die , and other fish are showing same spots. I don't have a qt so is been my risk. Problem is lfs suck to buy healthy fish , where can I buy healthy fish ( looking for dwarf angels small tangs for a 75 g. Or should I just give up .

Best price for AI Prime?

Looking to get the best deal I can on a black with the black tank mount. I'm going to be getting two, but not at the same time. One now and the other next payday. I've found them for $199 w/ the mount free, but I'd prefer to spend money with a site sponsor. Anyone have a good deal for me?

Dwarf Angel

In a week or so I am going to add another fish to my tank. I have heard mixed reviews on wether or not adding a dwarf angel is a good idea. They alway catch my eye at the LFS. I don't want one in my tank though if it has a fair chance of being agressive towards its tank mates or eat my lps/softies. I have a 45 gallon tank and right now it has a chalk bass, Royal gramma, green Chromis, banded shrimp and various soft corals. What are your thoughts/experiences? If I am able to add one to my tank is their a certain variety you recommend and am I able to add more than one?

Cracked Tank + Pics

Alright so i have a cracked 29 gallon bow front tank. The crack is on the bottom so it is just straight glass down there no bend.

My question is do i fix it or have someone in town fix it or do i throw it out for spring cleaning this week?

Good to be back - I think!?

Had been a Reef aquarium enthusiast for years, but due to circumstances I had to give it up 3 years ago. Now returning. I think I was a member here at one time - so now here to "relearn" and to get updated info on the hobby. I will be setting up a 65 reef with LED lights, a refugium under it. I picked it up at very reasonable cost from a local who is getting out of the hobby. I will be moving it this weekend and resetting it up. I will list full setup when I have more details- fish and corals will be removed so I will get the sand/some live rock in the display and the rock/cheato and critters in the refugium and all equipment.

I will be rummaging thru the shed/garage for all the necessities ( mixing pumps, salt, additives, etc) and will need some help on how to do some stuff because: I have forgotten how - dam it is tough to be over 50 - you forget stuff too quickly!

I look forward to be active in the reef community again to get help and to help others.

Ted

Nitrates in SPS tank

Hey everyone,

I've been having issues with my sps corals for the past 6 months or so, and just wondering if nitrates are the issue.... I finally figured out how to do a high range test of my tank and the nitrates come in at 16ppm.

I know this is high, but several of my sps corals have completely died over the course of the past 6 months, basically since I introduced a few more fish that put me over the stocking limit for my tank (apparently). Other corals have turned brown or completely lost color, others have burnt tips or receding tissue underneath the coral where there is no light.

I have soft corals too, and thought that maybe terpenes and other allelopathic compounds were polluting my system, but I've been diligent about water changes and use lots of mechanical and chemical filtration, and my UV should be denaturing these compounds to let the skimmer pull them out.

So are nitrates the problem here?

I started dosing vodka about 2 months ago, am up to 7.5 ml per day but still no reduction in nitrates... this will bring nitrates down when I get to the critical level of dosing, I think around 15ml for my size system will do it, but need to build up slowly. Increasing the amount by .5ml every 5 days rather than every 7 days because my system is big and should be less sensitive to increases than smaller systems, right?

Will a male mandarin dragonet spike grow back?

About 3 weeks ago, my male Mandarin disappeared from my tank. After searching the tank and sump I had concluded that the poor guy had fallen victim to the RBTA I have in my tank. Fast forward to 2 days ago I was doing my standard sump cleaning and I took apart my skimmer and found the fish IN the skimmer. He was pretty beat up and slimmed up. All his fins are pretty beat up and his dorsal spike is gone. I tried introducing him back into the display tank but my female mandarin who was formerly his mate, proceeded to attack him and only stopped when I seperated them. She is treating him like she would treat another female mandarin.

I removed him from the display tank and he is currently living in my copepod breeding tank until I can get him fattened up and healed.

So, here comes my question, will his dorsal spike grow back so I can possibly have some hope of getting him re-introduced to the DP and his mate?

Flow rate on 90 gal Semi Reef

My question is related to flow. To start will be LPS / Softies with a move to SPS.

I've recently put up a new 90 that is going to be partial reef to begin and then grow from there. Over the years i've done FOWLR and in my 150 I've had 3 Koralia Evolution 1050's.

In my 90 i've put 2 - Jebao RW-8 Wavemaker's with controllers on opposite ends of the tank middle of the glass on alternating current -

Is this enough?

Should I keep a couple of the Koralia's? Currently two of them are set mid point on the end glass basically pointed up to stir up the top water. ( I know that doesn't sound right but I couldn't think of a better description )

Thx

Tuesday after the storm!

Good Morning Everyone!

Coffee is ready,

We had some really bad storms here yesterday. about 9 am it looked like midnight. the winds and rain did damage to my fence. I hope Jacob can repair today before I get home.
New Orleans had about five train cars get blown over the side of the track, pretty wild video of it out there .

Got my Life Reef skimmer. happy to say I will be getting the tank going this week.

Have a Great day!

Nice to be here!

Hi everyone! I am new to this site. I have been in the hobby since I was a young child. I currently have 6 aquariums and several other pets as well! I am off work on medical leave for a back injury awaiting surgery so I have a lot of spare time on my hands so I have been working with my saltwater tanks more.

I got into saltwater a little over a year ago. It all started with 2 brackish fish. I got a "freshwater" green spotted puffer at the lfs in town here. Once I got her home and setup in a 10 gallon tank I researched them a little bit more and found that are actually supposed to be brackish and then once grown they are full marine. I also picked up a violet dragon goby at a walmart that was sold as freshwater also, but the same situation brackish into marine. So I had 2 10 gallon brackish tanks for about a year and started to acclimate them into full on marine about a year ago. Once that happened, I put them into a 20 tall and got an ocellaris clownfish and some hermits. Then I decided that the tank wasn't big enough for my goby so I setup the 55 gallon tank. I now have the 55, 20 and a 5.5 with dwarf seahorses and I have 3 freshwater tanks also. A 20, 29, and 30. I joined because there a lot of things I do not know and this site seems to be a great database for all things marine! Glad to be here!

I am very WORRIED!!!!

mushroom

I just learned how to frag my star polyp and was getting impatient about my mushroom coral. I want to separate it but I'm not sure what it is doing right now it comes out spreads but it looks like it is folded in the middle almost like there is two of them bonded together and it has been like this for a couple weeks. Fyi I can only see one mouth. Any thoughts?

Help

What an I missing? I want to post a question but I don't know where to do it at other then here.

95 gal upgrade

Hi great site hope to learn a lot here.starting now☺i have had a 26 gallon running for over year and a half. I decided since I was moving house why not get a bigger tank so I got me a 95 gal with 30 gal sump.it has been up and running for 4 weeks with 10 kg of mature rock from my old setup and small amount of sand from old tank in sump. I have not seen an ammonia spike or nitrite but I do have some nitrates. I feed the tank every other day with 1 cube of frozen food.I know this takes time and I'm in no rush to put anything in but I am wondering if I might have missed these spikes or has the mature rock help cycle it that quick.I have tested the water every other day also and that is what has me thrown. Have done all the usual by using to water no light on no protein skimmer running only thing I have done is ato. Any ideas would be great.

So does the salt go in 1st or the water?

lol j/k I am in the process of making a Anemone tank. I have a 60gal breeder, two 250w MHs and a Kessil a150 deep ocean blue LED, reef octopus classic 150NI skimmer, reef octopus bh 1000 hang on the back skimmer, BRS Carbon/GFO Reactor deluxe, hang on the back refugim(for pods), 1/4 HP Coralife Chiller. 40lbs live rock, tomato clown, ocularius clown, yellow clown goby, dragon wrasse(he moving soon lol) few hermits, 2 fighting conch,20 zombie snails and around 300+ cerith snails ._. lol they making babies believe it or not. Everything moving nicely next step will be making algae scrubber. My Nitrates abit high at around 30ppm. Dose Kalk/Vinegar in top off at night.:)

In search of a chiller

Hey everyone!!!!
I'm in need of a chiller preferably the 1/10 to 1/15 range, if anyone has one for sale or can point me in the right direction of someone who has one for sale that would be great!!! Summer time is coming and the 40 gallon breeder will be in a room with only a window AC unit and I don't want to run that 24 hours.

Everything dying?? Please help!!!

i just added a sump to my 10 gallon nano. i used a DIY pvc overflow and added about 8 gallons to my setup. but now all my corals are dying out, fish seem a little stressed, and i cant find my shrimp! the corals are all closed up, and look pretty beat up. my fish are eating, but the smaller clownfish was sucked into the overflow and i (thankfully) found him safe inside the sump. now i have reason to believe my peppermint shrimp was sucked in and is now stuck in the pipes, i cant find him anywhere else. the water is also slightly cloudy.

i will try to attach some pics of everything soon, but so far does anybody have an idea of what might be happening? i think the double in size might have shocked the tank, but i used pure RODI water fresh from the LFS i usually get it from. it was also preheated before added to the sump.

conches

I bought 2 "fighting conch" after leaving them in my tank 1 vanished into my sand and 1 hung around... the one that vanished finally showed back up but he is totally different then the conch who hung around... let me know if you can identify which one is not a fighting conch... the white is "Houdini" the green is the one that mostly stays topside

Magnetic algea scraper/utility blades

Does anyone know of a magnetic scraper that uses standard household razer blades. Pref the ones that come wrapped in a cardboard type cover as utility knives tend to have oil on them to keep from rusting. Thank you ..

Anyone with experience - Bubble Magus Curve 5 Protein Skimmer

I'm about fed up with the Eshopps PSK150. I can't get it dialed in. It's over a month old. I've had it from 10" to 4" of water and several in between and it always overpowers with bubbles. It creates some foam but the collection cup just fills with water from the bubbles.

Anyone have any experience with the Bubble Magus Curve 5 Protein Skimmer

Lighting at Night/ Timers

Hello

I just order the 2 165w ebay lights.

http://ift.tt/1bxfhCe

What would be a good lighting schedule. My current light I leave the blues on all the time and the whites I turn on when I leave for work at about 6:30am and then I normally turn them off around 6:00pm so I can enjoy the tank with the light on for a few hours when I get home. I plan to get a timer for these lights which is my second question what is a good timer that i can run 4 power cables off, two for the blue and two for the whites? Is it bad to run the blues all the time? I am having a little cyano outbreak and I am thinking it might be because I have had the lights on for to long each day.

Migrating to new reef tank

I moved into my new house about a month ago, and I convinced my Fiance we should get a bigger tank to setup and it would be easier that way. :-) (commence tank upgrade dance)

We had to get the wood stand repaired, but currently the tank is up and running. I'm housing all my livestock and most of my LR in a temporary 20 gallon tank until the 120 is ready for them. I had to put some of my LR in a tub with a heater and PH for about three weeks, and only a turbo snail. Pretty sure there is some die off since there was almost no bio load.

Now the 120 has been up 48 hours, and I think I have .25 - .5 ammonia, but nitrite and nitrates are 0. I'm wondering what my process should be here.

Most of my LR is in the 20 gal, and it is properly cured. Should I move everything to The tank now so the bulk of the good rock can process the ammonia? Ir should I move some of the rock to the tank and hold off?

My concern is if I let it go too long the bacteria in the 120 will starve, creating a bigger problem. I was also thinking I could toss in a shrimp to feed the bacteria and just wait for everything to zero out before moving the livestock and the rest of the rock over.
Sand is New live sand from the LFS.
Didn't save any sand to seed with but I'm dosing MicroBactir7 daily.

Any advice offered is appreciated.

Sump without fuge quetions

Hello! I have decided to set up a 10 gallon sump under my 55 gallon tank because I am tired of looking at all the equipment in my display tank. I have a few questions. I have been reading tons of information online but still can't seem to find the answers I need.

First I have a hob fuge that I use now for breeding pods and macro. It is only a gallon but it does the trick. So I don't want to put a fuge in my sump. From what I have read I don't need baffles then. So now the issue is this, I know I can put my heater in there, can I or should i attach my filters in the sump or should I try to set up an area with sponges etc like some sumps show? I have a hob filter for 80 gallon aquarium now and a canister filter that I use. Can I hook those up in the sump? Or is that silly? Also what about my uv sterilizer and protein skimmer? I have a hob skimmer now. Should I leave it on the display tank to skim the raw water or hide it in my sump? If I put it in the sump do I need a baffle or is it okay since I don't have the fuge?

Lastly what about the plumbing? Im going to need a hob overflow box because my tank isn't drilled. I have heard that some overflow boxes prevent flooding, but I also read to drill 2 holes in the tubing just about in inch under the water line to prevent a flood. What is everyone's opinons on that also?

Incredible Naso Tang

I would like to share a story that recently happened. I have a 180 gallon reef tank that's still a work in progress. A few months ago I bought a naso tang to put in the tank. He has done very well and is a amazing fish. After awhile I purchased a blue throat male trigger which I adore. The blue throat was very very skitish for quit sometime. One evening I walked up to the tank and the trigger got freaked out and took off and hit his head really hard on one of the power heads and swam behind a rock and laid on his side. I was shocked and upset cause I thought that was it for him. I waited a few minutes to see how he was. I eventually reached in and tapped him to see his reaction and when I did he came out and started swimming from one side of the tank to the other. To my amazement the naso tang started to follow him and swam right above him and made every move he made seeming to protect him and look after him. It really seemed as though he knew he was hurt and wanted to make sure he was ok. They are best of buddy's. The trigger recovered fully and has become more acclimated to his environment. I just thought it was a cool story and would like to share it.

Buy Asterinas (from shop or individual)?

Hey Reefers,

I thought this would be a simple request, but I am shockingly surprised that my initial research seems to indicate that there are no vendors who sell Asterina starfish. I understand that they are a nuisance which is why there isn't a wide market for them, but I also realize they tend to overpopulate without any effort and I figured any vendor would isolate them in a species tank and try to sell them before flushing them.

Anyhow, the reason that I ask is that I have a very small Harlequin shrimp which I got to eradicate a serious overpopulation of Asterinas, and I would like to purchase them and keep them in my sump or in a species tank to use for feeding the shrimp now that he has taken care of the excess in my DT. I know some people feed legs from a chocolate chip star occasionally to keep them alive, but I would rather not deal with that. If I could get a bulk supply of Asterinas I could feed them as needed.

Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

What snail is this? Ident please

Can someone please tell me how to upload pics. On here so I can figure out what my mushroom is doing Please

Blue tang might have ich?!

We bought a 180g tank with a blue tang, naso tang, trigger, and porcupine puffer.
We have had it setup for almost a week now.
The blue tang was in rough shape I guess from its very first owners. Fins have scarring from previous fin rot :( and she had some white color on her. Previous owner said when they bought the tank it came with her and I was told she was in really rough shape then-almost no blue color mostly all white.

Anyway she was very stressed out because of the tank move. We got her in the tank and all the other fish were good to go, while she laid on her side behind rocks breathing heavily. She did that for two days before finally coming out and swimming around. She lost a lot of color when she was stressed from the move but its mostly back now.
She's swimming around but barely using her tail to swim-mostly uses her front two side fins to swim.
Today I came home and she's still a bit pale in color but now has some white spots on her which she didnt have before-worried its ich!

She has been on a bit of a hunger strike as well as the puffer since we moved them.

No other fish are showing signs of ich.

This is a fowlr tank-no corals.
Water parameters 0amonia 0 nitrite and high nitrates 80-160! Think this is due to shifting all the sand when moving the tank. We are working on getting this down (water changes and going to get mangroves/chaeto algae and turn the sump into refugium)

Pics of the tang to follow

Silicone for sump build?

Spring Cleaning Clearance

Cycling 20 long

So I'm starting up a 20 Long mostly for fragging. I have put a few pieces of live rock in my display tank to seed it and will transfer that over to the 20 in the next few days. I also ran a power filter over my display tank for months and put that on my 20 so hopefully the cycle shouldn't take long.
When do you think I should start putting in the rock from the display tank? It was dead before I put it in so how long will it take to seed.

Urgent. Coral mucus everywhere

So I woke up this morning to what looks like coral slime / mucus everywhere in my tank. All corals are very upset and my cleaner shrimp died. I started running carbon as I prep water for a WC.

What would have caused this? should I do anything besides water changes? Please advise... Tank does not look well

Neptune Apex & Chiller Question

Hello Reefers,

I have an older model Coralife Chiller, Aqua Chill 1/4 hp I got off craigslist almost a year ago. I remember it working when I bought it and when I brought it home. Anyways, last night I finally wanted to add it to my tank after all this time its been sitting and I let it run a 10 gal bucket of water and it did AMAZING bringing the temp down to 66 degrees. This had must of been the temp it was set on or default then it kicked on back at 60 degrees until it cooled down to 66. When I hit the (SET) button like the instruction say to program the temp I want NOTHING happens

I was up all night taking it apart checking everything and still nothing. My question is this. If the temp controller is not allowing me to set the temp I want on the chiller its self would I be able to control it when I plug it into my APEX controller???

Thanks,

Magnesium too high?

I just tested alk mag and cal

Mag off the charts approximately 1600+
Cal 415-420
My question is if I do a water change today with my coral pro salt I and going to bump the alk and calcium to what they need to b but the magnesium is already too high so I'm gunna make it go even higher what is the best thing to do in this case the tank is a 75 gallon with about 30# sand and aprox 80# liverock no sump and pretty well stocked with lps I was expecting mag to come down over the week as my last test on Monday showed it even higher using Red Sea test kit thanks for the help in advance

led lighting wavelength

I am looking at some led lights.
evergrow is what I am looking at.
I see some with the white channel
12000-6500 mix
and some with only 4500.
what is best for hard corals?
what will help with nonalage growth?
Any help would be great.

Branching GSP?

Over the course of the last few months I've noticed my star polyp colony growing some unusual branching formations. I've never seen another colony do this before. Is it common?

And as you can see, the branches are mostly obscured when the colony is fully extended.

I've noticed it does make it easier to frag the coral though, I've done it a few times. Any and all information is appreciated.

Is it sunday already?

Good morning TRT peoples.
Looks like its going to be a nice one here today. I need to do some work on my garden and koi pond, but right now im at work. Started pulling the 11-7 overnight shift part time pn weekends now. But the wife got me an eye phone so i can get back to my trt again since my android deal died on me.

Can anyone identify this?

Hey I just took a picture of these things growing in my tank. They started out as two small patches, around 1 centimeter in diameter, but now have grown almost 2 inches wide. It is definitely not algae. It is some kind of animal i guess. You can see the large openings like the mouth of an invert. It also inflates and deflates during the day. And these are its true colors. Anyone know what it is?

purple linckis starfish dying?

I purchased a purple linckia starfish from liveaquaria this week. This is the first time I've attempted an online order rather than purchasing from a LFS. My tank is a well established reef with stable parameters. I used the drip method acclimation over the course of an hour before releasing into the tank. The starfish did great the first day moving all over the rock work and appearing healthy and well adjusted. However by day 3 I began to see a white substance exuding from one of its legs at the base of the body. By the end of day 3 I found the starfish upside down on the bottom of the tank. I netted it up and realized it detached the leg that had been producing the white substance. I thought it was dead but then noticed the feelers on the bottom of the remaining legs were still moving. I placed it on a rock which it attached to. The detached leg at the bottom of the tank also seemed to have moved and just in case this was an attempt at reproduction I left the leg segment down in the rocks. The starfish has moved along the rocks this evening but is now slowly peeling away with legs hanging limp and mouth exposed looking as if it may fall from the rock it's attached to. So now my question. Do I leave it in the tank? If it dies overnight will it pollute my tank and kill my corals? What about the leg segment that detached, should I remove it?

Fluval Sea Marine and Reef, Full Spectrum LED Light

I am surprised I haven't asked about this light already. Given I haven't posted much for a good long time, I wanna know about this light.

Who here can tell me about the Fluval Sea Marine and Reef. It gives full spectrum of light and its an LED. I used it for well over a year now, and it seems to keep all manner of coral alive. However I heard once that it doesnt do well for coral...

But as a whole, what can any of you tell me?

Ordering Fish/Coral Online

What have your experiences been like and do you recommend a certain supplier? I have been looking at vividaquariums.com and they seem
To have a great selection at nice prices- and a very informative website. My thing is, I feel like my livestock is pretty freaked just from the transportation from the LFS to the tank at my place- I can't imagine the state one would be in after being shipped around!

What is this growing in my tank?

And should i be concerned?

Tanner's 90 gallon build... FINALLY

After much time and setbacks, my 90 gallon is running and ready to be turned into a beautiful reef, well, almost. Here are some details on my setup.

*90 gallon single corner overflow aquarium
*Eshopps Rs-200 sump
*Reef Octopus classic 200 INT Skimmer
*60 lbs of dry sand
*40 lbs of live rock
*45-55 lbs reef cleaners dry rock
*Lighting is going to be set up with, 1 kessil a350 wide, 1 kessil a360 wide

The tank is currently going through the cycle and is hitting its diatom period. I'm currently working on the overflow because currently, I can't get the in-flow and out-flow to tighten to the glass without drips of water leaking through. I'm trying to do everything I can not to permanently seal them together, but It may come to that, any suggestions? As of right now it is being cycled without the overflow and flow is being controlled from a koralia pump. (Wanting to add a second in the near future) I am very excited for this tank and can not wait for the additions!

Sorry about the quality of the pictures, they do not do the light or tank justice, but it was the best I could get with the spectrum of the lights.

Aquascaping questions?

Putting a reef together I have a aqua scape question. In all of my FOWLR in the past I have always put my rock in formations that created bridges or caves or other options that gave the fish hiding places. Hate to say it like that but places they could go and hang out.

Putting this together and wanting to do more LPS, Softies and maybe SPS does it matter if I scape the way i always have or should I pile it all together and create a mountain?

50% water change tomorrow. New LED lights coming this week. Tomorrow is wood working day with the hood cutting out spots for the lights to sit on top and then i'll use some quarter round trim to hold in place.

Thanks for feedback and here's a current pick. Still going through the uglies so not making any changes at the moment.

90 gallon ( 750 gph overflow ), 50 lbs base rock, 60 lbs live sand, Jebao RW-8 ( another on it's way ), Koralia Evolution 1050 x 3, sump twin bags, Eshopps PSK-200 ( about to replace because I can't get dialed in ), Mag 12 return, 3" yellow tang, 2" blue tang, 1" Oscelarris Clown x 2, Red Fire Shrimp, Hermits x 10, Snails x 10, small star fish.

150g rebuild/reset - Lesson learned!

Hello forum,

This post will be a little long, pardon the long explanation but I think it is necessary to cover in details my fortunes and misfortunes in this hobby thus far. I first got attracted to marine life a while back but I really got into the hobby when one day I saw my friend dad's 200G FOWLR but I wanted to go beyond since I knew there was alot more that could be done with a fish tank. Soon after, I started researching and reading alot in different forums on how to properly setup an aquarium. needless to say, I told my friend that I was going to build a reef for less than $200 dollar (he laughed at me and said "go ahead and let me know how it goes", lol), soon after I started scouting for a used tank and equipment around town and the misfortunes began. My first tank was 55G with fish and corals, a few months later the tank crashed. I believe it crashed because of a heavy bio-load and not enough filtration in the system since the skimmer I had was a cheapo.
Furthermore, I later found a good deal on a 90G tank with stand and went for it. I transferred the fish, lr and corals to that tank; but to my demise ich broke out in the dt due to the introduction of a tang without proper QT. The ich killed most of the fish I had, at that moment so my morale was very low because I wanted a reef so back that I was neglecting alot of the signs the tank was giving me. I went from ich to algae to anything to everything a tank can get as far as pests.

Three years later I have upgraded to a 150g all glass tank. I have come to understand that I've made plenty of mistakes in this hobby as many of you have, but all of the bumps on the road were nothing but lessons into bettering my skills in the hobby. I went from buying cheap equipment to save money, to not QT'ing fish when bought from the lfs; at the end it all was nothing but a wasted of money. The lesson for me was that I initially had to invest in the right equipment even if it meant to spend more on equipment but with a guarantee that it would last me years to come. Another lesson was to be patient, I used to grab any fish from the lfs without doing proper investigation on the fish and ended up taking it out of the tank later or even worst, killing it. In the past three years I have spent thousands of dollars into getting a nice reef (long way from that $200 I thought I was going to spend originally... naive lol) and still working towards achieving that goal. Yes I admit, I have slacked in taking care of the tank and fish here and there due to life circumstances but lately I've been thinking that I must finish what I started three years ago, the perfect reef system.

Long story short, I have learned from my mistakes along the way and now I am ready to right them all. I recently took down my system due to an aiptasia outbreak that got out of control; restarting the system is giving me one last change to get my system to were it needs be. I started buying equipment I didn't have to accomplish a nice a healthy system for the fish and corals. I read and re-read many forums trying to figure out the best way to restart my tank and I came to the conclusion of an acid bath. I took this route because I had tried many different things to rid the aiptasia and nothing worked for me; I tried lime juice, vinegar, bbf, hot water, aiptasia-x and none of these methods worked for me, hence the acid bath.

Since this initial write-up 2 months has gone by and things are looking great. I kick started the DT with some clean lr (no aiptasia) and also used a SeaChem bacteria kit to speed up the bacteria colonization process. I have transferred all of the fish to the DT and they all look happy and healthy. At first they were a bit stressed out because I changed the aquascape and built 3 big island, they seem used to not much hiding place now.

Sorry for the long post, but here is what I currently have in the tank.

Equipment:

Reef Octopus SRO-3000INT skimmer
2x 200W heater
GFO reactor
Carbon reactor
Mag Drive 9.5 return pump
Jebao WP-15 (new)
JBJ ATO
2part BRS doser (new)
4 stage RODI unit
2x Taotronics LED fixture Dimmable
Aquatec CDP6800 buster pump
2x Koralia evo 1400 powerhead
T5 retro fit kit w/ 4 ATI blue+ bulb

Fish:

Purple tang
Powder blue tang
Starry blenny
Yellow tang
Swallow tail BF
Cleaner wrasse
Clown fish (matted)
Foxface
Midas Blenny
Flame Angel
4x peppermint shrimp (transferred from last tank, was fighting aiptasia)

questions:

1. What would be a good photo period cycle (hours a day)? from what time to what time should I run the cycle?I'm planning on having mostly LPS with a few SPS.

2. I have mostly big fish in the DT, what smaller fish would you recommend for the DT on the small scale?

Thank you in advance for reading this thread. I'll really appreciate any advice, comments or suggestions. Will post pictures of my setup as I go along.

Thank you.

Powder Blue Tang Not Eating in QT

Hello All,

Exactly 1 week ago I received a beautiful healthy looking 5" PBT and placed in QT. The fish is swimming about normally but I cannot get it to eat. I've tried garlic soaked Nori, NLS pellets, flakes, and Mysis (all soaked with garlic) and no luck. The PBT is disinterested in any of the foods and I'm beginning to worry about it's health. It was nice and fat when I got it online and still looks to be healthy.

The QT is a 29G tank with some PVC fittings for it to hide in. I have the tank covered with a towel to prevent stress. Ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphates, Ph, salinity, ect. are all in check.

Do you feel I should move the PBT to my 180G DT as the QT may be too small and stressing the fish more? The PBT shows no signs of white spots but I have seen it "flash" once or twice on the 2nd day it was in QT, but no more. This is the last fish I'll be adding to my QT that already houses a variety of other tangs, wrasses, triggers, clowns, anthias, ect.

I do not want to risk an ich outbreak in my 180 reef tank.

Thanks!

Learn from my mistake- "stunner chalice"

So after a nice feeding last night, my "Stunner" chalice decided to go on a murderous rampage.

Stingers extended to about 7" away, killing whatever they touch. Meh. Maybe there is a reason its called the "Stunner" coral.

Casualty list:

4/6 heads of Candy Cane

Birdsnest (RTN)

:angry::angry::angry::angry::angry::angry::angry:: angry::angry::angry:

SO CAREFUL WITH YOUR STUNNERS- THEY ARE THE SPAWN OF THE DEVIL

Frogspawn Coral

I'm thinking about getting a frogspawn frag a couple weeks down the road but I wanted to get some opinions first. I think the coral is really neat but I am concerned with the sweeper tenticles. I have a few other softies in my tank (45 gallon) and two fish at the moment. I've read that as long as you keep them fed you shouldn't really have a problem but I wanted to hear some of your stories and see if anyone has had an issue with them stinging other corals/livestock. Unfortunately a lot of the corals I think are nice also have sweeper tenticles but I guess I'll have to live without them if they would endanger other organisms in the tank.

Toadstool Coral looking rather limp.

I just got a Toadstool Coral 4 days ago. Yesterday afternoon I noticed it slumping over. The light was off at the time. So I just thought it was because of that, since, most the corals in our tank retract or shrink when the light is off. Just checked it this morning and it's still slumped over, but the polyps are out though. Is it sick? Is this normal? TIA

Anyone identify this?

This popped up over the past week, literally EVERYWHERE in my tank on the underside of rocks. Definitely filamentous - definitely not algae. I have no idea what this is - or if it is something to be concerned with or somehow controlled. Any insight is appreciated.
