Carbon in filter sock?

I came across a mention of this and I'm not sure if it is ok or not. I run a single filter sock that sits about 85% in the sump. Can I run a bag of carbon in this sock? Is having the sock sit in the sump ok? And if so can a mesh bag of carbon sit in the sock that is in the water also?
