Nano tank impossible???

Went to my lrs today and spoke with a guy who seemed very knowledgeable. But when I told him what I wanted to do (set up a 10 gal tank, bare bottom, lots of live rock, 1 fish, some cleaners and coral with no filtration only heater and powerhead), he said it couldn't be done and would eventually fail.
