TobysReef is starting this blog to keep an ongoing record of our new reef aquarium with the hope being so new as an aquarist as we encounter issues it will provide a good reference point for others to assist when possible to ensure our little world flourishes! This a family affair kids and girlfriend all being a part. We are very dedicated to creating a natural environment and am sure we will have questions along the way... ENJOY!

12/19/2105 See our first bristle worm
12/20/2015 Nitrates at 20ppm
12/22/2015 Nitrates 5ppm Phosphates >.02ppm
12/23/2015 FULL TEST alkalinity - 4mg/L ph - 7.9 specific gravity - 1.0235 ammonia - 0 nitrite - 0 nitrates - 2ppm phosphates >.02 temp 78.6
12/23/2015 ADOPTED
6 Blue Leg Hermit Crabs
1 Emerald Crab
3 Turbo Snails
12/26/2015 FULL TEST alkalinity - 4mg/L ph - 8.1 specific gravity - 1.0235 ammonia - 0 nitrite - 0 nitrates - 2ppm phosphates >.02 temp 78.6
12/27/2015 more bristle worms - now 3 confirmed between 1" and 2"
12/28/2015 FULL TEST alkalinity - 5mg/L ph - 8.1 specific gravity - 1.0235 ammonia - >0.01 nitrite - >0.01 nitrates - 4ppm phosphates >.02 temp 79.1 (Everyone doing well!)
12/30/2015 FULL TEST alkalinity - 4.5mg/L ph - 8.1 specific gravity - 1.024 ammonia - >0.01 nitrite - >0.02 nitrates - 4ppm phosphates >.02 temp 78.8
01/01/2016 ADOPTED
1 Ocellaris Clownfish (orange & white -.75") Marlon
1 Ocellaris Clownfish (black & white orange nose -.75") Coral
1 Coral Banded Shrimp Keke
Drip acclimated for 3.5 hours - released Coral Branded Shrimp with water. Netted the 2 clownfish and added to display tank. The black & white took right to the frozen brine. The orange & black did not. The Coral Banded Shrimp was HUNGRY!!! Everybody slept.
1/2/2016 FULL TEST alkalinity - 4mg/L ph - 8.1 specific gravity - 1.024 ammonia - >0.01 nitrite - >0.02 nitrates - 4ppm phosphates >.02 temp 79.1 Everybody ate breakfast and clean up crew took to the leftovers. Orange & white finicky (still not eating a ton) Purchased Hikari Seaweed Extreme - orange & black devoured it. Everyone ate well. 1/3/2016 ADOPTED
1" Blood shrimp "Tabasco" Drip Acclimation for 3 hours then added to the display Very playful then settled in.
1/4/2016 bristle worms more daring out a little more in daylight and we are guessing that is over feeding. Considering a 6 line wrasse as my next adoption.
1/5/2016 Purchased a Seachem Ammonia Monitor - it just hangs in the tank, but I want to keep an eye on changes without doing tests 2 a day. Temp 79.2 Specific Gravity 1.024+ but not .025 going to add water. 1/6/2016 Everyone doing well. Blood shrimp very reclusive hiding under shelf so we started target feeding with a baster. Began piping for the sump... I am sure I overbuilt but after watching all 26 episodes of BRS 160 in a single weekend I did not want to have to rework everything after it was up and running. going to use an Eshopps 800 hang on overflow (kinda nervous, but it is what I have) PVC is all cut and measured and started gluing. 55 gallon DIY sump has been drying for a week. four stage designed - water overflow chamber / skimmer chamber / live rock chamber /return pump chamber. I am hoping to plug it all in and test on 1/7/2016
1/7/2016 - everybody doing well. Coral Banded shrimp molted and I saw a pinkish red 1/2" splotch on the back glass of my tank. Coralline!!! I am told I hope... I also noticed little flea like critters dancing around the water and on some rocks when I turned off the pumps for feeding. Amphipods? Copepods?... I am researching now. Well that catches everyone up to date on my progress with establishing our reef aquarium.
