Hey everyone, I recently purchased me a 75 gallon aquarium with a stand and all the general equipment used for fresh water fish. I plan on upgrading everything in my 38 gallon fowlr to the current tank. I would have went bigger but due to he amount of room available I would really only be able to get a 75. I would have liked a 90 gallon but I could not find I used one near by and I most certainly did not want to pay full price. Anyways on to the upgrading questions. So I purchased 40 more pounds of live sand to go with my other 40 pounds currently in the tank. I will buy more live rock once I get everything together. My current equipment for the tank is:
2 - Aqueon heaters rated for 40 gallons each (may buy I bigger one considering the sump will add more total water volume)
2 - Powerheads rated around 600 gph each
1 - Basic light fixture that came with tank. (works for now but will replace later)
1 - HOB Red Sea prizm skimmer rated for 100 gallons (will be replaced by a better in sump skimmer once I get the sump setup)
Now onto the sump.
I have never built a sump before on any aquarium. I know the basics to it since I have read. Heres where I need your input. Drilling the aquarium is out of the question since the glass is tampered. My local LFS recommended using a siphon box as an alternative. On top of it half of their display tanks in their store with a sump uses siphon boxes. I've read about the risks and how it can flood if the siphon was to break but on the bright side my floor is tile and its been flooded in the past so ive had experience with it i guess lol. The sump will be probably a 20 gallon long or a basic 29 gallon. I would use my current 38 gallon but my friend has been wanting it for a while and this is what gave me an excuse to upgrade so I took it. Alright so as far as function and purpose of the sump goes, I understand its used to hide equipment and improve water quality and all of that. My main questions for this upgrade are
1. What type of skimmer would be good for around 100 total gallons of water volume and would fit in a sump this size?
2. What are some good types of siphon boxes? (my lfs was busy at the time and I didn't get to ask what kind it was but I would still like recommendations)
3. Im not an expert of refugiums either but would this tank need one?
4. What kind of equipment would I need to return the water from the sump back into the tank at a similar rate it is being removed?
5. Since this siphon box hangs at the top of the aquarium, could I add the sump later when I remove some water during a water change? (I would get it now but my budgets only going to allow me to get the tank itself up and running for now.)
Alright guys if anyone has taken the time to read all of this and can reply I would really appreciate it. I have time to consider this since I'm going to completely remodel the room I plan on putting it in. If I go without the sump for a while I should have it up and running within a month. Let me hear what you guys think. THANKS!!!
