Phanesoul's 90g upgrade thread

this is about what the wall around my sandpit that im going to have in the middle of my 90g is going to look like and some sketched up plans of my upgrade to my 90g system. it will be sand in the middle of this rock wall and most likely dolomite for the rest of the substrate.

the big rock will be against the glass, I will also use cement to fill behind that cave in to help prevent detritus settling there, that side of the cave will not be viewable anyways from the outside. from the top of the big rockwill be a home made pillar with 2-3 shelves coming out of it and at the top will be a waterfall to make the return look cool. the pvc pipes will be drilled and a removeable concrete shell on the outside to hide the pvc.

im utilizing the sand pit to trap detritus in hopes that pods will utilize the rock rubble as a breeding point, nutrients dictating of course. the goal of this rubble ring is to support 1-2 mandarin dragons. if it so happens I cannot support pods then ill setup a culture and seed them in with pod condo's. time will only tell for that one. I may add another outside row of rocks to help make tight spaces the fish wont be able to stick their heads into.

this little décor will protrude from the top of my large pyramid mound of rocks. ill have 2 mounds, a large one on the left and a smaller one on the right. both mounds will be very open inside with holes between all rocks for plenty of paths in and out of the mounds. all assemblies will be epoxied together in whole or partial, interlocking, pieces.

on the right side there will be a smaller pyramid of rocks with a plateau on the top I think, depends on how it looks when I put it together weither I like it or not. this stack is meant to be smaller because ill have a third sight to look at. a rock wall, with very broad openings and arches, much like my the middle of my scape now,

the right pyramid will be brought to the front, and the wall will be pushed to the back and sit at an angle so it curves with that corner. that's about it for the basic aquascape of the tank. ill laso stick a rock to grow acans on somewhere in there, and possibly a bridge from the large stack to the return column. I was thinking I might have 1 or 2 NPS corals but I probably cant feed often enough so after everything is setup ill look into it, but the wall will have a low lit area and an overhang if I want to do it

h is high, m-h is mid for powerhead placement. ill want a gyre in the future but that will probably be one of the last things I get. other then that I only need 2 more 800gph powerheads to have 4 for about 3600gph, return not counted since the return is designed for looks over functionality.

The overflow will be drilled (upon verification that the glass is not tempered) and ill use mirrored glass to create a coast to coast toothless overflow on the right short side of the tank.

Now onto the good stuff! the stand will be leveled and perfected, I just kindve threw it together, but since the 90g will be rimless perfection is a must, utilizing self leveling epoxy for the top. where my frag tank sits now will be widened to support a 20g frag tank, a small addition to the stand, but I want it and it may also allow me to add in a settling tank. I have a second light fixture I need to finish wiring and the frag tank will not be plumbed in, seeing Geoff's desktop build I may run a small settling tank for the 20g, may not, who knows, not me right now, ill need to modify the stand structure first to make a decision as it is a softie system and nutrients are welcome in small amounts in 90g land.

overflow will run into a box settling tank with an angled bottom so detritus will make its way closer to the drain valve. from here the settling tank will drain to the left most chamber of a 55g sump. a octopus skimmer, bb-2000, will reside in this chamber on a 9ish inch shelf, water level in this chamber will be 17.5 inches high and processed thru the skimmer and excess will be allowed to flow out of the chamber into the return pump section (return pump chamber is the middle chamber), ill have about 4 inches above the collection cup before I hit the underside of the stand. on the backside of this chamber there will be a overflow type structure built only its purpose in the keep water out instead of let it flow in. the skimmer will be plumbed thru this chamber where the output will route into an algae trough. the algae trough will run the length of the 55g sump and lit with 10 420nm red led's (if I recall correctly) and dump into a large chamber at the right hand side of the sump, if I grow algae cool, if I don't great. this chamber will eventually be a second display area and its residence will be an anemone and 2 clown fish. this is a special idea, my friends all have little kids and the stand is 36 inches high. they have to either stand on something or be lifted up to see the main display and I want to give them something they can look at without help. plus my doggie, The General, seems to like watching my tank as well :) from this chamber water flow to the left into the return pump chamber with either a mag 3 or mag 5 pump. skimmer is rated at 250gph, with my head loss mag 3 is 257 gph and mag 5 is 296 gph so im torn a little there.

excuse the rough sketch. I made a very nice drawing with a conicle settling tank just to come home and realize I don't have room for one.

the ATO system will consist of a 10g tank with a light indicating low water level, I believe with the modification ill be doing to the stand it will fit perfectly.
