I have come across my first real problem that is keeping me from going forward with my build. I have been thinking and thinking and finally decided to ask for some help.
I have a RO XS200 skimmer that measures 23" tall with the collection cup being a little over 5.5" and 1/2" clearance needed to get the collection cup off. With the stand I have and if the skimmer were to be flat on the floor of the sump with nothing under it I have about a 2" margin of error. Now the optimal skimmer depth is given as 8.5" to 10". Then using the gate valve I can control the water depth inside the skimmer.
My problem is... I have a 29 tall sump I was considering just re-doing the baffles, but if I used this I would not have enough room to clean the collection cup outside of the sump as there would not be enough room to get it out so all cleaning would have to be inside the sump. I would be fine with doing this, but there will come a time when I will need to take the whole skimmer out for maintenance/cleaning. I am tempted to just go get a 20 gallon from Petco and make a new sump, but that does not leave me much room for error with a 12" tall tank.
I am thinking of going with the 20 long, setting the baffle at 9.5" which will leave me an inch to the minimum water level if I need to raise it a little. Is this the best option? Anyone with experience with this skimmer how much water did you have it in? It is going to be pretty difficult to make modifications to this once it goes in so just making sure I am thinking this out clearly.
Also attached is a rough sketch of my sump plans. Any problems you see with this before I go ahead with it? I am taking a bit of a different approach to things this time around.
