Legally Collecting Wild Corals in Florida

Hi all!

I live in SE Florida and for a few weeks now I've been doing a little research on legally collecting wild corals in Florida. I know for a fact that zoas, ricordia, etc. can be found miles off the coast of this part of Florida if you dive, but unfortunately I only snorkel. Maybe someday I'll learn to dive, but not anytime soon I'm afraid. I've found some evidence that zoanthids can be found in only feet or inches of water here in Palm Beach County (namely this thread and second hand testimony from a friend), but in my years here I haven't found any. However, I haven't really been looking for corals until recently. The point of this thread is to document my search for local wild corals that can be legally harvested for recreational aquaria in places easily accessible, and hopefully to learn some info from other locals here on TRT, creating a compilation of info on local corals (and, of course, pictures !). It may take months or even years for me to find anything (if I ever do), so don't be surprised to see this thread revived by me after long periods of inactivity if I find something.

Before you flame me or anyone else who posts on this thread, please know that I will do nothing illegal and sincerely hope that nobody else will either. I too strongly disapprove of any illegal actions taken towards these fragile creatures and honestly intend for this thread to be a compilation of info and pictures, not a map to Coral Treasure. I think we'll have to deem whether or not it's appropriate or moral to post the exact locations of corals, as surely there would be people who would use info like that malignantly.

For info on the current (as of April 22nd, 2014) laws regarding the recreational harvesting of corals in Florida, check out this link to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Comission.

Quote:

Corallimorphs and Zoanthids: No more than 5 single polyps of each may be landed per person per day, must be harvested with a flexible blade no wider than 2" such as a putty knife, razor blade, or paint scraper.

Thanks for any contribution! :D
