ATO Disaster

Last Saturday my ATO went a little crazy and did not shut down until the alarm killed the pump. The bad part is I use my ATO to add kalk. I think you can see where I am going with this. As a result my Ph went up to 8.73 in a short period of time and my alk was off the charts. Most of my tank made it through the swing, but I had a few loses. I searched the forum for others who have had similar issues. There was some advise out there I considered and some I followed. I ended up leaving the tank alone to let it come down in ph and alk without doing water changes. These threads were a few years old. Did I make a mistake. Should I have immediately done a WC? There were suggestions that that might do more harm?

As a result I lost a few pieces of coral. My beloved 13" diameter green and orange birdsnest will not sit on a piece of drift wood in my office. I lost all the frags of the same coral and a couple other pieces of SPS (a nice colony of red planet and a nice piece of green planet). I just don't know if there was anything else I could have done??? Seems all the lost coral had direct flow from my return where the ph would have been highly concentrated.
