Hello,
I've had a colony of green star polyps for nearly a year now. They were originally a pair of tiny frags but now they've grown and fused together into one big coral. I love the colour and waving motion, so I'm considering letting them eventually grow on the back glass like this person has done.
The colony is separate from the other rocks so it won't overtake everything else. Here it is:

The benefits I can currently think of is that it'd made the tank look more interesting, there would be less algae to scrape off the glass (My pair of trochus snails are incredibly lazy) and I'd be able to frag it more easily.
Are there any real drawbacks to this, such as chemical warfare? I probably won't try it for some time but it seems like a nice idea so far. Opinions welcome!
