New to fish keeping, ran into BIG problems. PLEASE HELP

I would like to start by apologizing for such a long post. I want to give as much detail as possible. As the title says, I'm new to the hobby and my tank was going good for almost 3 months, until disaster struck and nearly everything in my tank died within 48 hours.

I'm going to try to give as much detail about the tank as possible.

Hopefully someone here could help me figure out what might've killed my fish and more importantly tell me what I need to do next.

7/2. Purchased a 40 Gallon glass tank, filter, Aqueon 100w heater, Omega Sea Premium Marine Salt, 20 lb bag of CaribSea Coraline Aquarium Gravel, and 10 lb bag of CaribSea Arag-Alive Bahamas Oolite Aquarium Sand all from Petco

7/10. Finally got around to setting everything up.

7/16. Added one large and 3 small pieces of live rock. I was having trouble keeping my temperature around 80. It kept getting as low as 72. So I ordered an Aqueon Pro 150.

7/22 the heater still hasn't come in so I echanged my 100 for a 150 at petco. (Not a pro) also added a couple under water lights and air stones.

7/24. Added another large piece and medium sized piece of live rock and a glass lid everything Still from Petco at this point as that is the only LFS within 100 miles. I also got 5 blue leg hermit crabs that same night. And some frozen brine shrimp to feed a couple times a week

7/26. The heater I ordered finally came in so I just added it too. And it seamed to stabilize the temp and made it more consistent at every corner of the tank. And also added another 20lb bag of the coralline gravel.

The month of August I added a blue damsel, yellow tail damsel and striped damsel. After they seemed stable and happy I put several sea shells, dead pieces of coral, and a couple pieces of drift wood into the tank. The driftwood and sea shells were all boiled for a while before putting in. Over the next few weeks I added 2 clown fish, a bicolor angel, a strawberry dotty back, sally lightfoot crab, a coral band shrimp, 2 emerald crabs, 2 red crabs, and 10-15 more hermit crabs

9/07 added 20lbs of live deco rock from Gulfliverock.com (it was supposed to be delivered on 9/03 but was delayed. This caused most of the plant life and a few clams to die off. I was a little nervous about adding it but went ahead anyway. The seller ended up sending me 6 lbs more since I was really wanting the clams and what not. He was out of town for about a week so it was some time before he sent the replacements.

9/19 I changed over to a canister filter from the hang on I had.

9/22 Added 2 more pieces (6lbs total) of live rock. Both pieces have a small amount of coral (not sure if it's alive or not as I know nothing about corals), one has a large clam, and the other has a very small feather duster worm and a small (what I'm guess is an) aiptaisia anemone. That night I added 2 more clownfish

9/23 Woke up to both of the new clowns dead and several more fish looking splotchy and acting a bit funny. My other clowns were at the top as if gasping for air. All the other fish were pretty low and not moving much, breathing rapidly. I also notice the temp was up to about 85.

So I opened the glass lid and when I got home that night several more fish were dead

On 9/24 more things were dying and that night I could see dozens of bristle worms all around the edge of the tank.

By 9/25 the only thing still alive was the clam and other life on the newest pieces of live rock. The coral band shrimp lasted the longest but ended up dying as well.

A week later and nothing else has died and I found a bumble bee snail (that was a hitchhiker from a live rock from petco) and a red leg hermit.

Through out all of this process my nitrates, nitrites, ammonia were at 0 every time I tested. My PH was pretty consistently at 8.5 but was around 8.0 on the 23rd after fish started dying.

Again the biggest thing I want to know is what to do next.
