light setting 90 gallon help

I think I am doing something wrong here. I bought 2 lights for my 90 gallon (the chinese box lights, non programmable, increments at 25/50/75/100). They work great and I asked the company the recommended setting. I was told to start really low and work up over weeks, not past 65. I did that until I had the setting at about 30 for blues and 40 for white. My corals were open and then would close so I backed it down, waited and nothing. I was then told they weren't getting enough light so I slowly increased until it was 50 for blue and 40 for white because I was told that the blue channel should be the light to depend on. Now I have alot more coral closing. Unsure if it is due to light but my water was tested and parameters are fine. Not getting any growth out of my corals either. My lights are sitting 9 inches above the water and my tank has a glass lid. Any ideas of what I should have my settings at?
