Lesson #1 for those new to reef tanks.
1) Don't use the crappy salinity tester they sell at the LFS
2) Buy a refractometer
3) Use it.
The lesson I needed - #3. My corals were shrinking and disappearing. Did a test to discover the water was at 1.035. Forgot that simply replacing fresh new water did not mean compensating for the evaporation like you would in freshwater. Thankfully I've eased it down to 1.029 over 3-4 days and the corals are all coming back. Red cleaner shrimp has survived well and my new red female mithrax crab seems unaffected but probably happier. Plenty of hair algae for her, which seemed unaffected by salinity levels.
