we all know the current stated challenges to ATS style filters, how they were supposed to revolutionize the hobby ten years ago but nowadays the argument is common, here more than any place, that the phosphate isn't contained within the plant but actively exchanged with the environment. sounds reasonable, paradigms shift in our art but Ive always been left hanging in one aspect of this newer challenge
how are the masses getting the after pics and params they are posting using ATS systems
since an anti-ATS user might claim they have been tricked and phosphates weren't removed, just converted among organic and inorganic species, how did their tank invasion targets get cleaned up for the after pics? what about those who clearly report on thousand-post threads about long term support? Whatever the true mechanism is/was, it persisted for many, using the systems we commonly shoot down nowadays.
Any bunk or snake oil method dies out. we may be quick to bandwagon, but is any of you using an eco-aqualizer? When those hit the scene in 2003 ish refugiums were just as common, and touted, as they are nowadays yet the aqualizer died off, only to be used by hot tub owners who want zero nitrate water :) but plant refugiums kept getting resold over and over up until today.
If you search for algae removal options, and opt for threads greater than ten pages where actual cures not just type is collected, you have exactly these options taking the cake nowadays and for a while to come:
-phosphate stripping media in one form or another
-ATS, refugia in some permutation
-Clean up crews
-chemical cheats which is where I like to play.
I never got my convincing answers as to how these ATS proponents are able to measure and picture any benefit to their 'leaky' systems. plant allelopathy? if we are sure their phosphate isn't really contained, something else has stepped in to ramp up the users of this biology. SM is an excellent salesman, but even that didnt work for the eco aqualizer, SM is onto something, can we even admit which aspects those may be?
