YouTube, advice sites, and other sources of information in the saltwater/reef fish hobby paint a pretty picture of adding and keeping fish in an aquarium. Anyone who has dabbled in fish tanks knows that it doesn't always work out so great.
Attempting to create a thread for people to post some stories about fish they've lost, why, and what they did to avoid it in the future. Hoping some rookies having problems can see that its happened to all of us. Horror stories are welcome!!
In my current tank, I lost a pair of clowns to Brooklynella and a Banggai Cardinal to fin rot. I'm pretty sure the main reasoning behind them getting sick was a combination of me adding fish too quickly and the tank not being stable enough. The temperature would fluctuate too much which caused stress. I've since adjusted my routine to ensure the temperature stays constant (keeping the feeder door open when lights are on).
In my older 20 gallon freshwater tank, I once bought a new heater and went away for Memorial Day weekend. I returned home to an empty tank. It wasn't truly empty...all 8 fish were floating at the top of the tank...cooked when the new heater went haywire. Ouch. I call the tank Gettysburg.
