So I started up a 29G FOWLR about 4 months ago and have slowly started adding livestock (following advice I got here). I first, added my CUC (a few hermits, 2 Nassarius, 4 Margarita, and 2 Banded Trochus) and about 3 weeks later added my first fish, a Green Chromis.
Everything looked great, but I waited another month before adding my next fish. I wanted a goby/pistol shrimp pair, but my LFS doesn't sell them already paired and needed to special order the shrimp, so I went ahead and just added a YWG. A week later, about 2 weeks ago, the tiger pistol shrimp came in so I added him. It's been two weeks and he's settled into a burrow near the back of the tank on the other side of the small rock that my YWG has burrowed under.
Things were going right along and I was just thinking about adding my next fish, a Royal Gramma, until I got home from work today. I couldn't find my Chromis, and he didn't come flying out into the open when I added some frozen mysis. Everything looked fine this morning when I left, so I was a little worried and started moving around some of the live rock.
Sure enough, he was dead and his body was crammed into the small hole in the rock that the pistol has been hanging out in. Ammonia and nitrate have both been 0 since the cycle finished and nitrates have been steady around 15-20 ppm, salinity is right at 1.024 (measured with a calibrated refractometer), and my YWG and CUC are looking great so I'm pointing the finger at the pistol.
Is this common, or did I manage to get a rogue shrimp? If so, should I wait on any new additions or see if my LFS will take him back?
