Suggestions on CUC

Hi All,

I'm in the process of cycling my new tank. I'm a ways from adding anything to the tank but I was wondering what people feel are the most important species that make up a clean up crew? Anybody have any favorites or are there any must haves? My tank is a 40 gallon mini reef tank.

I'd really appreciate your opinions and any information you'd like to add.

Thanks,
Jay

Metronidazole with Inverts?

Hi all,
I have a 220g. One of my carberryi anthias is not looking great, but I cannot catch her and dont want to stress her. (I have 3, the other 2 are plump and happy, and she has lost her irradecsene and just has like matte scales and is getting thin. She has 0 outward symptoms, she is still eating and active, no dating, flashing, itching, spots, rapid breathing, etc etc etc. Ive had her 6 months). Anyway, I was going to try to feed her metroplex mixed with focus to see if that will help anything but I have corals, crabs, snails, shrimp, and nems. Im waiting for a response from seachem but anyone have any experience? Can all these inverts eat this food? Because Im sure some will get down to the sandbed or the shrimp will grab what they can etc. Thank you

Fox's 110 reef build

I figure that since as of yesterday this tank is up and running that it is time for a build thread. I still have a lot of work to get done while it cycles but it is nice to finally see it coming together.
The tank is an older single center brace oceanic 110 60x18x23 and sits on a custom 2x6 and 2x4 based stand skinned in plywood and faced with knotty alder.

Dino issues NEED HELP

Well as in the title it seems like I'm losing a battle here I have a 75 gallon mixed reef with some zoas and other soft corals.

About 3 weeks ago I noticed long stringy alage with bubbles and now I cant get rid of it after doing some reading I've come to the conclusion its dino algae. I've lost all my snails and a coral banded shrimp. Fish and hermits seem fine as well as the coral.

How do I get rid of this I've been doing constant water changes about 5 gallons every 3 days and the next day it's right back. I've done 20 gallon water changes to no avail. Even siphoning and manually removing the algae by hand and nothing works.

Anyone know if they still sell the dino x treatment? Cant find it anywhere.

Also maybe what amounts of hydrogen peroxide would I dose?

I'm open to suggestions.

Can't avoid it, MONDAY!

Good *orning TRT Friends, and....HAPPY *ONDAY! Up a s*idge early as one of the dogs felt strongly about it, and then.....COFFEE, so I'* up. Looks like spring has sprung around these parts this week, FINALLY! 70's cli*bing through to near on 90 co*e Thursday. Got a bag of 'everything' bagels around here if'n you're hungry to go with our coffee. Hope all are safe and sound,

Looks like gray paint splatter on Tang

Real quick explanation. I was watching my tank tonight and everyone was doing great. I went and ate dinner, came back and looked. My yellow tang has what appears to be spots or patches on his fins and lower belly. I can't think of anything that would have caused it other than my RBTA stinging it. But I've never seen or heard of that happening and have no idea what it looks like. Searching online didn't come up with anything useful. Any ideas, I'm really worried. My tang is so beautiful and healthy, or was. I tried to get a pic but lights are on moonlight and the tang doesn't stop moving.

Insane hermit crab death

Ok so I just got home from the New York trip and I noticed this when I was looking at my tank. What do y'all think happened?

Hi.

I’m steph currently have live sand, a live rock a chromis and a sandstar.

Chilly Sunny Sunday

Morning all :wavey:

Woke up to a new to our ears foster dawg bellyache'in to the morning.
let the regulars (and him) out, the A Team is now slumbering with Blyth and the newb got some grub in the hopes of shutting him up for a bit (I will see how long that'll allow me to hang out in the shop:rolleyes: )

Gave Boomer a Kong toy stuffed with frozen peanut butter when it was sleepy time on his first nite, in the hopes of keeping him quiet,,,, it kinda worked with him barking a short time (I can deal with a learning curve) but not wanting to get him used to goodies at nite or in the morning,,, does not work well with future adoptive parents having that lil action to perform with him. A last resort will to give up and see if he will be quiet with being in the big bed,,, that's a road you can't come back from.

Coffee out in the shop as usual to start my day,,,, dunno what the rest of the day will be like,,,, will work on that after I work on this java.

On to the day,,,, (and kinda waiting on Blyth texting me saying to get in the house and tend to a barking long dawg:bawling::nuts:.

Hope everyone has a great day!:wavey:

Tank Cycling Help

Hello! One week ago I set up a 30 gallon tank, cycling it with Dr. Tim's One and Only. I have been testing periodically and the ammonia spike has already passed, but the nitrites spike came with worrying levels. They are, from what i can tell, off the charts. They have been like this for a couple of days. The nitrates are also extremely high, off the charts.

I was wondering if I should perform a water change because I read that levels of nitrites too high can harm the bacteria and halt the cycling process.

Needing Pump Recommendation for Nano

What is the best small and efficient pump for a 3-gallon nano?

Unidentified disease

Hi guys,

My fish list is as follows:

Powder blue tang
Yellow tang
Naso tang
4 x Blue chromis
Mandarin dragonet
Azure damsel
Maroon clownfish
Mimic Filefish
Midas Blenny
2 x engineer gobies

Parameters:
Ammonia 0.05 - 0.1
Nitrite 0.05 - 0.1
Nitrate 13
Oxygen 5
PH 8

After adding the powder blue and the naso 7 days ago (both of which were in a quarantine tank at the LFS and had been Hypo and copper treated), there was sufficient stress for some sort of disease to spread to my fish.

I was thinking my tank had had white spot and when moving the powder blue he had contracted it because he’s been flashing against a rock (not very violently) about a 10-15 times an hour. I let it slide as there was no white spots visible and he was eating and everyone else seemed okay. The Midas Blenny has recently started flashing pretty violently from time to time on the rock, one of the chromis flashing and the yellow tang flashed for the first time today. Upon closer inspection I saw white patches (not spots but like blemishes) on both sides of the Blenny and he breathes pretty rapidly but eats and swims like normal most of the time..

Obviously, I want to get this under control quick but I’m not seeing white spots and I know they can take a few days to appear but I’d have thought I would have seen them by now... I do however have ammonia at 0.1 (I think due to overfeedimg so sorting that out) any ideas as to what it could be and what I should do guys? I’ll attach some videos below:

Nitrates

So, I went away about 3 weeks ago and my tank was neglected, I had someone feeding my fish. When I returned, My nitrates were 100! I have been doing daily 5-10 gallon water changes for the past week. I have a 75g tank and feed about a cube of frozen food each day since I have a heavy bioload but I make sure the all of the uneating food is removed from the tank. I got the nitrates down to 25 a couple days ago. But for the past 4 days, I haven't been able to get the nitrates to drop even though I changed 30g of water. I also added a reef octopus bio pellet reactor, which is paired with my reef octopus 150 protein skimmer. I siphoned the sand bed both yesterday and this morning yet my nitrates haven't dropped! I did test my ro/di water and freshly mixed salt water and they both have zero nitrates. Also, I change my filter sock daily. Does anyone have any Ideas

Oh, and I forgot to add I am using Salfrite test kits.

Back again.......

Hello TRT members, it has been a while since I posted. I use to own a 75g, 125g and sold them all. We adopted a small child and between the new addition, side catering business, and regular job....I had to give up the hobby "briefly".

My son has taken an interest to tanks on his own and it OPENED the door to me getting back into the hobby (wife is reluctant....but coming around).

I purchaed a little 5g tank for his room about a month ago......swayed my wife into "allowing" me to purchase a Coralife Biocube 32.

I just set it up last night and starting the slow process of cycling the tank. I plan to add corals this go round and less fish. I look forward to reading post and catching up....it's been 5-6 years....I believe?

This forum was very helpful the first go round and I am sure that hasn't changed!

Blessings, Mike

Reef tank minimalism?

Anyone have tips, advice, recommendations for what I will call "reef tank minimalism"? Over the past several years, we've seen the minimalist trend in the housing and lifestyle industries; this approach of stripping away all the superlative fluff and living with just the basics.

Now that I've rekindled my love of SW aquaria, I want to get my mixed reef tank back in shape and add color/shape/movement again. However, I don't really have the time, or frankly the energy, to devote an OCD obsession to this hobby like I used to many years ago.

I want a good-looking tank with some colorful corals and neat little critters to watch. But I want to keep is as simple and easy-to-maintain as possible. Would any TRT members consider their reef tanks to be minimalist but still interesting and cool to look at? What have you done to minimize the effort and maintenance needed for your tanks? What easy-care corals, inverts, and fish do you keep?

I'd like to spend more time staring at my tank and relaxing than constantly maintaining it.

Thursday up and running

Top of the morning Folks, and.....HAPPY THURSDAY! Got some Cream of Wheat to chase our morning coffee down around here. Sunny and 60'some'ish, but tomorrow rain and thunder storms, and in the 50's. 'April showers bring May flowers.....SOME TIMES!'. Saturday is Bay Fest over by work in Somers Point....which closes a long stretch of the city down to sane folks and turns it over to the nutty ones. Typically the start of the climb to dominance of tourists. Big sigh. Hope all are safe and well,

Return from a looong hiatus!

Holy cow, it has been a really, Really, REALLY long time since I've been on this forum (or any SW/Reef forum)! According to TRT stats, my last post was in December 2013. Egads!

Anyway, after the birth of my second daughter in 2012, an unfortunate die-off of almost everything in my mixed-reef tank in 2013, and a subsequent massive aiptasia infestation, I kind of lost my mojo and my OCD for saltwater aquaria. My tank has been up and running all this time, though. I just haven't put much effort into it. As an example, until a week or two ago, it had been 3+ years since the last time I did a water change on my tank!

The only remaining inhabitants of my tank are a lone Ocellaris Clown (10 years old), some snails and hermit crabs that somehow survived the neglect, and several small sponges that have grown out of nowhere.

To be honest, I was basically waiting for the Clownfish to eventually run up the curtain and join the choir invisible. Then I was going to dismantle the whole setup and give everything away. However, my daughters love the Clownfish (named Volcano), and I promised to keep the tank running as long as he was still alive. On several occasions, I have tried adding new fish to the tank, but they always end up "disappeared" within a couple weeks with absolutely no trace of what happened to them. Volcano has always been the lone survivor. Sometimes I wonder if I own a possessed Clownfish who eats any and all new tankmates I add to the aquarium. Or is it just coincidence?

While doing some snorkeling on vacation in the USVI last month, my awe and wonder for wet, salty things was rekindled. A couple weeks ago, I started doing frequent water changes again to get my parameters back in line. This past weekend, I picked up a few small coral frags to add some color and interest back to my tank. Just some easy corals like toadstool leather, green star polyps, frog spawn, a couple mushroom polyps, a rock of zoas, and pulsing xenia. I want to add more stuff back to my tank, but I want to take it slow and make it simple and easy to maintain this time around.

Anyway, my point with this post was to simply re-introduce myself and say "Hi!" to anyone who may remember me. I'm excited about my new lease on the salty life and look forward to becoming active on TRT again.

Thanks,
Robb

20% water changes, fact or fiction?

Hi all,
so here's a beginner question even though Ive had my 220g mixed reef tank up and running for a couple years now. I religiously do 20% water changes every 2 weeks on my tank. Its a PITA but Ive always thought they were mandatory for a successful tank. However, Im a few days past the 2 week mark (bc life) and Im wondering, how many of you who have had tanks long term still do 20% every 2 weeks? (Maybe its different if you have a smaller tank too, idk, i change out 50-55 gallons which takes 14 hours to make and has to be stored in a 55g trash can in my kitchen.) so 18 days since last water changes, My nitrates are 0, ammonia is 0, phosphates 0, the cal/alk are fine, ph is 8.2, fish happy and healthy, corals growing etc... basically my tank is hitting the same parameters now that it does right after a water change?

My question is, am I over doing things with changing this much water every 2 weeks? Can I/should I scale back? Thank you for your thoughts!

Skimmer pump

So the pump on my skimmer died. I e-mailed the manufacturer of the skimmer for a replacement pump. The original pump is no longer available so they sold me a replacement. Looking at the specs the replacement pumps output is 190 gph. The original pump was 590 gph. Will this make a difference or did I just get hosed? Thanks for your expertise.

Yep, Tuesday!

Seahorses

So yesterday I said something about seahorses and she asked me if I could get some for my tank but told her that they needed to be in a species only tank. And I was thinking I might be able to convince her into getting another tank for seahorses. So what do y'all know about sea horses? I am trying to get as much information as possible. Has anyone had seahorses before?

T5 Light Modification

So for my 55 gal tank I picked up a used coralife 48” ho quad light. First reef tank so I don’t have much experience with other lights but I’m happy with it and with how much I have into it. Well I’ve been replacing the bulbs every other week over to ATI bulbs and while on brs I noticed they had ATI bassast so I’ve been tossing around the idea of going ahead and replacing them before they become a issue. While getting ready to order them I then noticed they had dimmable ATI bassast that could be used with a light controller, that got me thinking about maybe a custom rebuild of my light so that brings up my question what are the benefits of being able to dim t5 light? Would the benefits out weigh the cost?

The ballast are $65.99 each. Need 2
Reefkeeper alc to be able to dim is another $79.99
And I’m guessing the alc is just a module and will need a reefkeeper controller cheapest one use $129.99

Unless anyone knows of a difference t5 dimmable controller

So that’s $341 to add dimming to my lights seems a little high to just add that but that’s why I’m asking. And I’m sure I can find other uses for the reefkeeper controller

Or just buy the regular ballast for $26.99 each?

Thanks matt

Anyone interested in a Devils hand coral?

I have considering getting rid of one of my devils hand corals they are in heathy conditions and don't have anything wrong with them but I just can't get them both happy I can always get one happy but then it messes with the flow for the other one. And they keep getting moved my the snails and my urchin(he's always doing something's to mess with my tank!! Lol!!!). So back to my point is anyone interested in a devils hand coral? I am mainly looking for trade but maybe willing to sell not sure yet.

Good mawnin', TRT!

Coffee is ready and smelling great. Scrambled eggs with cheese, cowboy potatoes, cinnamon whole wheat toast and local strawberries. Maybe someone will fix bacon or sausage.

Cool start to our day here, but will get up to 70. Rain this week, and we need it. The pollen here is awful right now.

Off to church.

Lots of love and hugs and peace to everyone!

Power head

I have a 20 gal tank with a hang on water filter. What would be the best power head for the tank. Also I'm in the begging stages on my cycle would it be better to run both I believe it would or should replace hang on with power head. I just don't wanna lose what bacteria I've started in my filter. Thanks for any help.

Testing kits

Ok as many of you know I only have testing strips which aren't very accurate, and have been needing to get better testing kits. So what testing kits are recommended that have everything I would need? And also low prices. The only thing I can test accurately is the specific gravity. What testing kits do I need as a bare minimum? I will get more eventually but for now what would be the best to get?

400 watt metal halides

I found s person selling two 400 watt metal halides withthe 2 reflectors and ballast/timer that where in the canopy of a tank he bought..it is an excellent excellent price..but those of you who have experience with metal halides let me know...its for a 220 tank..is that going to be outrageous power bill increase...if i mount them in an open back wood canopy top will i need a fan or is that not enough..pleae anyone who has experience and is in the know about these fill me in about pro's and cons etc...75 dollars..all in working order..sounds like a deal to me but i worry about the heat..I dont care if it made my power bill 10 to 20 bucks more but if we are talking 50+ def something to consider.

My diamond goby died!!!

I found my diamond goby dead on its back by my anemone I thing my anemone killed it.

Tank cycle

So Im new to salt water tanks and in the process of cycling my 20 gal. tank. I've been reading and studying as much as I can, but I'm still l very much a beginner. I placed live dry rock in my tank 5 days after putting down my substrate and water in my tank the rock delay was due to shipping delay. I know now from reading I should have waited. But i started my tank with nitrifying bacteria since day one. Now I'm 14 days in haven't seen any diatoms yet, but from reading I think I should see something by now but I also know most of the diatoms are microscopic. I know patience is key, and still have several weeks for my cycle. My water parameters as of today. Are salinity 1.022 specific gravity, Temp 76, Hardness 10dh, P.H 8.0, Amomonia 0.50ppm, nitratrate 20 ppm. I'm iffy on the nitrate I'm using strips and it's hard to see the nitrate at low levels. I'm also not running my lights. I just wanna know if you always have a visible diatom bloom for a cycle. Also Is there anything else I can do to help my tank build its bacteria system. Or anything I should change.

Frag swaps

Does anyone know a good way to find frag swaps? Like a website that has a list of a lot of them? I have tried to find one near me for the longest time and the one time there was one near me, Dallas, it didn't work out and I couldnt go. So any suggestions? I don't think I have a local reefing group so I can ask them.

Tips/Best Practices For Moving A Reef Tank

I have a 55G reef tank with about six fish, three shrimps, brittle stars, 3 BTA’s and a handful of corals.

In about two weeks I am going to be moving- it’s a short move, only takes about 15 minutes to get from the old apartment to the new apartment.

I’m pretty nervous about moving the tank. Any tips/best practices on the nest way to get the tank and it’s inhabitants safely from one place to the other would be greatly appreciated!

Help identifying this algae, please

Hey everyone,

This algae first showed up about a week ago. My initial cycle has been complete for about a month and a CUC and two clownfish were added about 2.5 weeks ago. It's in a 29g tank with an Orbit Marine IC LED (no refugium or skimmer). The algae is only on the tops of the rocks directly underneath the light (which is positioned slightly more towards the back). The light is on about 10 hours per day at about 30% of its max.

I tried to do some research to find out what kind of algae this is but I was hoping for a more certain answer from much more knowledgeable folks like you ;)

My biggest question is whether or not this is "good" or "bad" algae, and if bad, what's the best way to handle it.

Thanks for any help!
Cody

My second first reef tank

Hi Everyone,
I set up this account almost four years ago when I tried a 20 gal reef tank, which lasted about a year before I took it down to change apartments. I was having constant troubles with coral bleaching, suicidal anemones, and a slowly dissolving zoa rock so I didn't try again until a few months ago when I finally bought a house and could try again to do it right.

Well, here is what I have so I can link to this thread if I need to post any questions:

90 gal, with ~20 gal sump.
80lbs live sand and 100lbs live rock.
2 x 1600 gph powerheads, plus a few hundred gph of return flow
Bubble Magus Curve 5 Skimmer
27 W Marineland LED strip, as well a 165 W LED fixture. Both sit directly on glass cover of tank, which probably filters the light some.

1 Starry Blenny
3 Bangai Cardinalfish
1 Green Clown Goby
~2 scarlet hermits
~10 bumblebee snails
~10 nassarius snails
1 Tiger Conch
2 or 3 peppermint shrimp
1 small ricordia mushroom
1 sad-looking zoa frag that looked much nicer in the LFS

temp 78-80, sg 1.025, ph 8.3ish, nitrate/nitrite/ammonia all 0, phosphate was 0.25 when I tested at LFS a few weeks ago.

I have a Tiger Wardii Goby and Onespot Foxface on order, and plan to add a pair of clown fish and one day hopefully one (or a pair) of mandarin dragonnettes.

:wavey:

Flame angel

Hi all, just introduced a flame angel to my tank, I currently have him in there along with 4 turbo snails, a conch snail and blood red shrimp.

I know it's to be expected for him to hide of a while but is there anything I need to keep an eye on? To keep him healthy and active.

Thanks

Wednesday!

("Ingenious huh!")
Good morning to all our TRT Friends, and.....HAPPY WEDNESDAY! Grab a cup of joe and some Cinnamon raisin toast, and I'll be back in a bit with a little story. But for now the day offers partly cloudy skies in the mid 50's with a friendly breeze. Hope all are safe and sound, and all the best,

Clownfish hosting Mushroom

Found my clownfish hanging around my mushroom. Mushroom is much bigger than fish and closes up when I feed. Do you think my clown is in danger of getting eaten? See picture below.

tank cycling with live rock

So my tank has live rock, and live sand sitting there. Do those two things cycle the tank? Or should I put some fish food in a net for an hour every day.

New live rock in an established aquarium?

I have a 16 gallon biocube which has been established for about 2 weeks after upgrading from a 5 gallon. I have 2 clownfish and some live rock from thr old tank and I was wondering if I could add more live rock to it? Ive seen skmewhere I have to “cure” it but what exactly does tjat mean?

hello

Hello! Hectorgg here..I'm new to the community and also the hobby. I'm hoping that I'll be able to get a lot of my questions answered here since no one in my family or any of my friends own a saltwater aquarium.
My husband and I recently bought our first home and that was one thing that he has been warned about for years now...I told him ages ago "when we finally get a house I'm absolutely setting up a saltwater aquarium". So here I am..I've had my tank up now for 2 weeks and have my live rock curing. I've done a lot of research on the web but all the "how-to" videos in the world won't give me the kind of one on one info I'm looking for.
Nice to meet all of you and I'm hoping all of you can help educate me and help my little "slice of the ocean" thrive!

damaged acan

hello again, so I had a coral with sweeper tentacles that killed part of an acan in my tank. I never noticed the tentacles and realized part of the coral was dead but didnt know it was being stung till it was too late. I thought they were spaced out enough.
so here is my question.... I know if its dead its dead. Will a new head grow in the spot of the dead or do I have to cut it off and hope a new head grows in its place. so far its been 2 months and I do not see anything new growing in its place. wondering if I need to cut the dead section off.

thanks again guys... like this page

filter sock vs no sock

hello all... I know a lot of people run their sump without any filter sock. is your water crystal clear running without any sock? I understand a filter sock is a nitrate factory but my water is a tad cloudy when i run it bare. is your water just as clear without a sock? I have 2 bags of chemipure in my sump. sometimes I dont want the sock to catch the food. I dont over feed and like whatever i put in there to stay in there.
thanks guys

NEW VID & GIVEAWAY ME Coral Carbon and GFO

Today we are taking a look at ME Coral's Carbon and GFO available at Premium Aquatics.

ME Coral Carbon: https://goo.gl/smTisL
ME Coral GFO: https://goo.gl/8KWbpB
ME Coral GFO 4x: https://goo.gl/GxjW92

Granular Activated Carbon (Gac) removes organic compounds, medications, pollutants and other chemicals from our aquarium. It also removes yellowing from the water making it crystal clear and giving the inhabitants a healthier tank.

Granular Ferric Oxide (Gfo) is the only chemical utilized by most reefers to reduce Phosphates (PO4). Elevated PO4 levels bring undesirable algae of all types and colors. These high levels are also detrimental to coral growth and color. Granular Ferric Oxide (Gfo) is the only chemical utilized by most sophisticated reefers to reduce Phosphates (PO4). ME HIGH CAPACITY GFO 4X is 4 times more effective at removing phosphate from seawater than regular GFO.

What's the longest your tank has been without power?

Central Virginia had some powerful storms last night. I've been without power since about 7pm Eastern yesterday (about 14 hours now). Luckily, all I have so far is a CUC and two clowns in a 29g tank (no refugium), so I'm not terribly worried, but my water temp is down to about 73 degrees already and there's no update yet as to when the power will be back up.

So, with just fish and cuc, is there a "minimum" temp that they can temporarily be at until power comes back? My apartment is about 65 degrees inside and will only be getting cooler the longer I'm without power.

Tis a storming Monday!

Good *orning TRT Friends, and......HAPPY *ONDAY! Grab your u*brellas and an anchor before you show up here for breakfast.....RAIN and WIND! Got so*e cinna*on raisin toast to go with our *orning coffee today. Yesterday was unpleasant weatherly speaking, but today will be down right UGLY! Will be heading to the shore this *orning unless an 'intelligent' phone call stops *e, because that's where the conversation left *e on Saturday. not dead!!

Hello everyone! lots of new faces. I havent posted in so long i dont even remember the last time i visited School and work have me swamped, and were buying a house ( what a headache)
anyway, since im moving, i have some questions about DSB, hehe.
The last post i did i was having nitrate problems. One suggested theory was my rock was old and was saturated and purging itself, well ive been blowing off detritus and doing weekly water changes forever, and if i wait longer than one week to do a water change the nitrates climb back up everytime, to around 25 or 35, then taper off and slowly climb from there. the DSB is about 5 inches and is over a year old. I dont feed this tank at all, maybe once a week. got two false percs and a sixline wrasse. 120+ lbs of live rock, and about a 35-40 gallon refuge. i siphon all detritus out with water changes. caulerpa has bloomed again, due to the fact that all herbivores have been moved to another tank, and increase in nitrates. I just cant keep them down. It has total volume of around 150 gallons. My other tank, soft reef, 135 gallons, has one inch sandbed, numerous fish, and is fed regularly, and is an established tank now, nitrates hardly ever climb over 5ppm even after 3 or 4 weeks with no water change. I am wondering if it is my DSB. I am moving so ill remove it to move anyway, maybe ill just leave it out. If it is a combination of the DSB and LR then ill go barebottom for around a month or so and let the LR calm down then add maybe one inch of sand for looks, and ill up the flow a lot. Anyone have any thoughts or opinions? I want to get a handle on this nitrate issue, every time i skip a week on the water changes the nitrates climb back up and my corals start to fade, thats when i know its time for another change. At least i havent lost anything yet, but nothing is thriving for over two weeks without a water change, and im getting tired of changing all that water every week just to reduce the nitrates by a little bit.
HAHA, sorry my first post in forever is so long, but i need to get this taken care of i got plenty of other stuff to be giving me a headache right now!!

Also as a side note this has been going on for many months now.

Livestock idea

Ok so looking for a “center piece” fish for my tank and was looking at the compatibility chart on live aquaria and looking at all of the “larger”
fish and none really fit in a 55gal tank then finally found a solution a pair of maroon clownfish. They get up to 6” and my wife already wanted a clownfish so perfect right, well I’ve heard the mean little turds. But wait all I have in my tank is the the theee stooges, 3 blue green chromes, and Dennis and Mr Wilson, yellow watchman goby and pistol shrimp, the 6 year old named all of them, awesome right.... I’m teaching her well. So from what I’m thinking is the maroon clownfish will keep the chromes scared and maybe they will quit being bullies to each other and if that works maybe even expanding there school to around 6-8. But would 2 maroon clownfish be a good idea together? To much aggression for the chromes? Or maybe fight with each other none stop? Has anyone had a success with a pair of them?

I’m thinking this as being my total fish population roughly
2 maroon clownfish
6-8 blue green chromes
1 ywg and shrimp
Maybe one other bottom dweller
Plus my clean up snails

Any thoughts on this

Help Identifiy.

Anyone know what this is and should I keep it?

Thx

automated fish feeder

Need opinions on automated fish feeders. Going on a trip in next couple of weeks and don’t trust to many people to show up everyday to feed them. So need to find a reliable mechanical feeder. Want to get it ordered early so I have time to test it

Help! Clown trouble!

Ok so I finally got the Picasso clown that I have been waiting on for months friday. When my mom brought it home and we put it in the tank I noticed that something doesn't look right about its mouth. Any ideas on what this might be? Or is this simply the way it is? Also the clown won't leave the top of the tank. Attachment 174914Attachment 174906Attachment 174930Attachment 174922

Identify this?

Hey,
I noticed this growing on my l rock and i was wonderinf if anyone could identify?
Thanks!

New additions to the family

So made it to my local saltwater only store yesterday to pick up my yellow watchman goby and candy striped pistol shrimp. Took the wife and 6 year old daughter, soon to be adopted, with to pick them up, it was there first trip up there. Worked out good for me as my wife kept looking at fish she liked and asking James one of the store owner about them and if we could keep one in our tank and the answer keep being they need a bigger tank to be able to swim around in. So when we left she said something about upsizing to a much larger tank so I started looking around already. Any suggestions on where to get tanks between 120 & 250 gals? I’m making a trip to Charleston in a week or so and checked Craigslist over there for a deal and jokingly send my wife this listing.
https://charleston.craigslist.org/fo...552680200.html
Anyone looking for a monster size tank there it is.

Anyways my yellow watchman goby and candy striped pistol shrimp haven’t found each other yet. They were in the same bag from the pet store and released at the same time in the same place and took off in opposite directions. Still hopefully. I also picked up a candy coral and a silver rimed acan. Both were the wife’s picks

Headed to Boston this evening where it is much the same, but chillier. Softball practice will be interesting Wednesday.

Coffee is on. Enjoy your Sunday.

Weird bumps on tomato clown

Hey guys, I just bought a biocube 32 that’s been up and running for a year and upon setting it up I realized one of the tomato clowns has large white bumps on its body. It seems too large to be ich and none of the other fish have any spots. Any idea what this is?

Skimmer opinions.

I need a good skimmer for a 75 gallon with a 20ish gallon sump. Decent price. Recommendations? It needs to be fairly compact.to fit in the middle compartment of my sump. Lid comes off.
