ID Please. White/pink worm

New here had my 40g reef tank for about 6 months. Anyways noticed this white/pink worm swimming around the tank at tge beginning of the year. It disappears for a while and comes back but recently i saw him today get sucked up into the filter suction. I did get him back out into the normal tank and also noticed another smaller one. The first one is not 2-3" and the one one is about 1 inch. Can anyone ID this and is it safe? Havent noticed any problems with any other inhabitants.

Weird hitchhickers on my live rock

Recently I've noticed these brown tube like spikes growing on my live rock. They don't move and I haven't noticed anything coming out of them either. Could someone please identify them and tell me if there are good or bad, also there is their new white/clearish tentacle thing that randomly shoots out of my live rock. I will post photos of both.

Please help with yellow tang

Hi all

We've had our yellow tang for a little over a month and just tonight I noticed some discoloration. I've read that some of this may be normal but all the pics I see doesn't look like what I'm dealing with. All my water levels are fine with the exception of nitrite... I've been trying to get those levels down but they seem to be holding mid range. Does anyone know what may be going on with the little guy?

Diatom outbreak

Hi, I thought for some reason that my tank was over 10 weeks already... but i did the math on the calendar and it's at 6 weeks... I have a huge Diatom bloom... I know it's supposed to happen.. but should I turn off my lights for a couple days even though I have fish and corals (4 of which are sps at the top of the tank) ?? I don't want to starve any of the corals from no lights...
I know we all love pics...so here they are....
there's a torch on the left and a hammer on the right you can't see thx to the dirty diatoms:mad:

Give me some feedback

Hello everyone,

I have about 9 months left in my apartment before I (hopefully) get my own place. I am leaving my tank down until I move as I don't want to set it all up and then have to move it. Last time I did that the whole tank crashed.

So what I have is a Deep Blue 30 gallon shallow, drilled with a corner overflow. I want to set it up for a pair of clowns, and then basically a zoa garden. I have nothing else besides the tank. I am building my stand. If you have any thoughts, shoot me some ideas for equipment. I am thinking of going with a custom square sump to fit in the stand nicely, but that isn't a necessity, just like the looks of them.

Any ideas appreciated

Thank you!!

Any idea what's all over my live rock?

Whenever I first set up the tank and added live rock. We noticed this white worm thing on one piece. It's a 29 gallon and it's been set up for about a month and a half. The thing never moved or multiplied. So I assumed it was nothing. I turned on the light this morning and it's covering my rocks and the back side of the tanks glass. Any ideas what it is and how to get rid of it?

The Complete Guide to Hang-On Equipment for Your Reef Tank

I took my wife for Stem Cell treatment

Medical Visit to California

This week I took my wife to La Jolla California for Stem Cell treatment for her Multiple Sclerosis. It is kind of an experimental treatment but we hope it works.

Before the "visit" began we spoke to the nurses a few times there on the phone and they were so nice I thought they were putting me on. The nurse asked my wife questions like they would before a medical procedure.

She asked my wife for her name, and my wife told her "Dale". The nurse said Oh, Awesome. Then she asked her for her birthday. My wife told her and the nurse said Wow, that’s so cool, thank you for telling me that. She asked her weight and said, Fur sure, totally awesome, you are so nice to tell me that. And the rest of the questions went like that. She didn't want to know anything about me or my fish tank.

I figured marijuana is legal there so maybe they were all "happy".

It was a six hour flight and they picked us up from the airport and brought us to the hotel where we checked in. The Supermodel at the desk spoke the same way and gave us cookies which were totally awesome, Fur sure.

The next day they brought us to the clinic where my wife will have the stem cell treatment. The Supermodel nurse comes in with the same attitude, thanking us and explaining the treatment and all that.

Then the doctor comes in with his arms stretched all the way out and says to my wife, First of all, let me give you a big hug. I don't remember any of my doctors here hugging me. Then the doctor explains her treatment to us for an hour and twenty minutes, all the while joking and making my wife at ease. She was really happy when the doctor told her that she doesn't have any belly fat so he has to harvest the fat from her thighs. (They get the stem cells from your fat) He couldn't believe her age and told her she is in the best shape out of almost anybody he treats and that she must spend a lot of time in the gym. She has gone to the gym four times a week for forty years. He didn't mention anything about my thighs or me not having any belly fat or anything.

After the treatment they bring us back to the hotel and call us to see how she is feeling and if she would like another hug, or cookies.

It was the nicest visit to not only a doctor’s office, but to anything.

We got home late last night and I see I got three E mails from them thanking us and asking how my wife is.

That entire experience is so different from a doctor’s visit here in New York.

A visit to the doctor’s office here would go something like this.

First thing in the morning you would call the doctor’s office and get elevator music with a recording that says "Your call is important to us, stay on the phone and your call will be answered by the next available operator". You would get that message twelve or thirteen times with 20-30 minutes of elevator music in between. Then someone would answer and say

"Please Hold."

Now you hear the music again with that same message.

You are now eating dinner with the phone on speaker on the table right next to the bread and mashed potatoes.

The operator comes on and says "can I help you?" You finish chewing and say: Yes, I am trying to make an appoin......... "OK, I will connect you with the appointment desk." Click

You hear:

"Your call is important to us, stay on the line and a representative will get back to you"

Now dinner is over and you are sitting on the couch watching TV with the phone still on speaker. It's hard to concentrate on the TV with Beethoven’s sixth symphony playing through the phone.

"Hello, can I help you? "

Yes, I would like to make an appointment.

"Sorry, the office is now closed; please call back in the morning."

After a few days you get an appointment the week after Easter. It is now December.

You get to the office and park, in the next town because the lot is full and there are a pickup trucks and wheelbarrows in all the handicap parking spaces.

Finally you get into the office and get in line at the desk. You grab lunch.

"The doctor will see you now"

The nurse or the lady who washes the windows shows you to the little room where you get naked, put on a paper gown and wait.

You finish your lunch while you read, "Pregnancy Today or Golf Magazine". Two things you wanted to read but never had the time.

The nurse comes in and asks for three forms of identification with a picture ID and wants to know your medical insurance group number and if they are still in business and how you will pay if the insurance doesn't cover you and how much money do you make as well as what kind of car you drive and what sign are you.

The nurse then says, what’s your name? "Paul", "How do you spell that?" Like the Saint, "Which Saint, Peter?"

No, "P" as in pin head, "A" as in "Are you kidding me", "U" as in are "U" kidding me, and "L" as in "Let me know the college you graduated from".

The nurse leaves.

After you are finished with Golf Digest and have learned 14 ways to breast feed in a subway, the doctor comes in. He doesn't hug you or look at you but looks at your chart and says. I don't see anything blaring here maybe you should see a Podiatrist.

Confused on quarantine tank

Hi,I have a biocube 29. I'm a newbie Ive had my first fishtank for 3 months. Most of my fish died, and I only have one left (coral beauty). :( I've decided to run a quarantine tank to save him.

I've been doing a lot of research, and there are a lot of opposing views. Do I need to cycle? Some say yes and some say no. I have some filter floss in my biocube, can I use this as seeded media? Im going to use my empty 10 gallon tank, and I'm going to buy a sponge filter. I have a spare hob filter, is this better?

Here is everything I'm going to have: 10 gallon tank, heater, sponge/hob filter, thermometer, refractometer, nitrite, ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, pH, and copper liquid test kits, pvC pipe hiding places and airston for circulation. Do I need anything else? Thanks!

2 RB photons and 2 Evo TS100 (4 leds total) FS

I have 2 - Reef breeders Photon 16 V1s. One has been over my tank for right at 2 years and never ran higher than 55%, the other is brand new in the box! never used at all, still in its box. I ordered it about a year or so ago right before the V2s came out but never got around to setting it up.
For the used photon 16 asking 150
For the new one asking 225

I also have 2 - Evo TS100s. They are pretty much just like the photon 16s, they where originally sold by reefkoi.com, One is still over my tank and has been running for about 3 years, the other I took down about 2 years ago and only used for a year or so. Never ran them higher than 55% power, that's all I needed with them.
100 for one currently running
125 for one that ran for 1 year

if interested in all 4, I will take 575 for all 4. Would make for a great sps build to put all 4 over a tank to avoid shading or over a frag tank.

Can send pictures if you like, all work great. All also include a remote to control them. Let me know if you are interested or have any questions. Prefer Paypal for payment. Thank you

FYI, open to best offer for anyone local.

Sad Cardinal

So I have 2 Ocel Clowns ans 2 Bangai Cardinals, they've stayed in their pairs for some time... But the last couple days I've noticed that one of cardinals has been spending all his time with the clowns and the other Cardinal is sleeping by itself? I feel bad for the little bugger!!

Green Algae problem

Hi Guys! Im from Sri Lanka and been reefing for little over a year now. I set up a nano 30gallon reef recently (2 months) I have this green coloured algae growing on my dead rock. Ive attached a pic. Im running a Zetlight ZA 1201L LED light.
Any idea what it is and whether i should be worried or change anything?
The tank is currently stocked with 4 fish (2 ocellaris clowns, 1 small firefish and a red fairy wrasse), cleaner crew(6 hermit crabs, 2 turbo snails and 1 cleaner shrimp)
I also have 2 soft corals(1 zoa and a mushroom coral)
Appreciate the advise/constructive criticism :P Thanks in Advance :)

A soggy seashore Friday

Top of the morning Friends, and.....HAPPY FRIDAY! Yep, the weather rock was right....RAIN, because I can see it's bubbles as it's a diver-rock at the moment. Fresh buttermilk waffles to go with our coffee and pink milk this morning to get us to our boats. Squirt got home safe and sound last night, though I slept through the retrieval. Working in the rain, nah, it won't kill ya, BUT.......working around pretty white boats, and white carpet, and upholstery, when you're walking through mud puddles and sand soaked in paint and oil, yeah, that's a biggy! So though there may be 'inside work', ("Inside of boats."), you still need to get to them through said material. Big fan of getting a job done, not such a big fan of doing it when it's not critical and you risk making the job harder! Rant done. I hope all those in flood prone areas stay safe, and all stay dry, and all the best to all,

Nano345 60 gallon cube rimless saltwater journal

This is my first saltwater tank and I decided to go with a 60 gallon for less hassle then my original idea of going with 20 gallon.

I purchased this 60 gallon already with livestock and cycled for at least 6 months.. So it is a well established tank for most part.

Has a sump, but no protein skimmer. The fish count is very low so I was told wasnt necessary.

Today I did my first test on the water and ammonia, nitrate and ph levels seem to be very stable. Ph looks to be at 8.0

I will double check once I clean my Hanna Ph meter to confirm this.

The fish are doing great, my only concern is the coral, they 2 of em appear to be stressing from the move from the store to my home.

I did upgrade lighting from metal halide to hydra 26. So I am wondering if any stress could be from the light itself.

JBJ Chiller Question

Hi there...so I think from reading the owners manual (have not purchased product yet) that the JBJ chillers...or at least the 1-10 HP model cuts of a degree under what its thermostat is set for. Meaning if the JBJ thermostat is set for 80 degrees, one the water hits 80 the chiller will come down to 79 and kick off at 79 then waiting for the temp to rise back to 80 and comes on again. Anyone have any experience with these?

Last Thursday in March

Good morning TRT Friends, and.....HAPPY THURSDAY! A dry one heading into the mid 50's, but tomorrow grab your rubber ducky! How about some scramble egg sandwiches to go with our coffee and pink milk today? Had a much less 'eventful' day at the office yesterday....no falls, or hazardous environments to escape. Things tend to get boring when they're 'normal'. I hope all are doing well, and I hope Harley is comfortable, and all the best to all,

A fix for cyano or the tank goes to the curb...

Hello Again:

I have a 94 gallon corner bow front. I have about 50lbs of LR and a 2.5" LS bed.
Two clowns
3 chromis
6 peppermints
2 cleaners
2 ingnitus anthias
some kenyas
some zoas
a sinularia

I have been having a lot of trouble with cyano. It's on the rocks and sand. I have turned the lights off for three-4 days. I have done WCs and siphoned rocks and sand. I have used PhosBuster (my phos is less than .1, usually 0). I have even used that dosing sludge algae remover. Nothing works.

I bought 6 cerith snails and 6 astreas. Haven't seen 5 ceriths. The astreas eat whatever is on the glass (which is not much), but not rocks and sand.

I have heard that some hermit crabs will eat cyano. Any ideas before I throw the whole thing out? BTW: it's 2 years old, this problem is only about 2 months old.
ALSO I used RO/DI that I make (filters pretty new) and I run GFL in the sump. I also have a skimmer and UV.

Aqua Illumination App question

So i am using the IOS version of the AI app

Need Some help. Actually 3 questions.
1. If someone comes over and i want to show them the lightning effect exactly how do i do that using my IOS app?

2.Is there anyway to sop the ramp up and ramp down time. What if i just want to have lights go on at 4PM shut down at 12a and moonlights go on 12a and turn off at 6am. And complete darkness between 6a and 4pm?

3. So like i said earlier i used the IOS app. Is there anyway for me to use my Desktop PC to that is connected via wireless to the same modem as the Prime?
When I go to my PC and look at the available connections Prime is no longer showing up.

Skimmer

Hey got this bubble magus nac 6 skimmer and the long tubing that goes up from the pump to the skimmer top broke near the top so it's not touching the hood.

http://ift.tt/2nhQV64
Basically what mine looks like. See that white flimsy looking tube to the right? That's the one that broke off right before it connects. What does this do and should I fix it?

Heeelp please!!!

Crap!! So we are new to the hobby... started a 75g tank in July... terrified, we let it run with no live stock until Feb. we have two little clowns and 1 little Hammer. I've noticed a few strands of brownish hair algae with bubbles beside it in three small locations. Water is great but calcium was at 380. I don't want to dose it until I know what to do about the algae. RODI water still testing at 000. Should I do a big water change? We've only been doing 10g every 1-2 weeks. What do we doooooo?! I know that stuff can get crazy fast!! We use new life spectrum pellets.

Help with Bio pellets please

Hey guys so I have been running my new bio pellet reactor now for just over 3 weeks. I have not added pellets or anything...however I was told by some that maybe my flow was too high for the reactor...so I backed it down a little bit to get the tumble to appear less "vigorous". I made the adjustment about 3 days ago and today when I came home the tank looked quite cloudy. Is it possible that my tumble was always just way too high and the pellets are just now starting to take effect? Need yalls thoughts. My fish and corals appear to be fine...I read online at BRS that initially this happens when using bio pellets, and its usually just looks bad but is something to not really worry about.

Help with sump design

Hi,
I have a 40 breeder with an Aquamaxx HOB skimmer currently. I built a new stand so I can get a 40 breeder sump underneath. I've been reading a bunch and can't quite get my mind around the sump design I need so I don't have a flood from the display tank. I'm drilling my tank with an overflow from glass holes.com, so I don't know how far below the tank rim my overflow will sit until I get the overflow this week.

I think I will have a 3 chamber sump. I'm going to continue to use the HOB on the DT for now, but will build the sump in anticipation of getting a Reef Octopus in sump skimmer which needs a 7" water level. The second chamber will just have the heater, so the rest is left for my return. The mag 5 I have has an outlet at about 41/2 inches. I'm trying to figure how high to get my glass baffles cut.

Do I want all the baffles as high as possible so there is the maximum capacity to accommodate an overflow from the DT? For example, 12 inches for the skimmer baffle ( 17 inch high tank ), and 10.5 inches for my bubble trap baffles before the return? I'll just have to boost up the skimmer when I get it. That way I'd have quite a bit of volume capacity in my return area incase the return pump fails. Am I missing something? Is it bad to have the water level that close to the top of the tank in my skimmer section? I'd basically have about 7 inches of length for my skimmer section, a pretty small middle section and all the rest can be for my return section. That seems to be what I'm reading ( to keep the return section big to accommodate for a back up)

thanks

Help with possibly upgrading tank

Hey y'all and thanks for the help in advance!

I have a 5 gallon tank running for a month with 5-7 lbs of live rock, 2in base of live sand, topfin powerhead, HOB filter rated 100 gph. I'm thinking of possibly upgrading (next month or two, no sooner), but want to get all of my research done first. For my current setup, a 20 gallon tank will be my max; I can get a 20 gal long tank that actually looks a lot bigger then it is from my LFS. Also, my 5 gal is fully cycled. If I do this, I also plan on using the 5 gal tank as a sump. So my question is: If I transfer the water, live rock, filter and media, and live sand (and add more of course), will the tank have to cycle again? Do you think there is enough bacteria to support the new tank? I know that people do this for setting up smaller tanks, but I haven't heard of anyone going from a small to larger tank.

I know it would be more expensive, but if I want to avoid any major cycling, can I use live water? Such as: Nutri-SeaWater. Would I need to ensure that the whole tank is live water or just a percentage, like 50/50, 60/40, etc, etc?

Again, thanks for the help!

Welcome to Tuesday!

Good morning TRT Friends, and.....HAPPY TUESDAY! Warm, near on 70 again, and again showers. Thomas's English muffins and assorted jellies, including Cherry George, to go with our coffee and pink milk....easy grab and goes. Doesn't look torrential today, just soggy.....but soggy and 70 is far better than soggy and 40! Hope all are doing well, and have groovy things ahead, and all the best,

Hello from Colorado

Hey all,

Just joining, have had aquariums since I was 10, I'm 27 now with a 75 gallon saltwater tank and a 55 gallon sitting empty right now. Just looking to help out and ask questions as I'm fairly new to the saltwater game! Just thought I would say hello!

Asterina starfish wanted

Hello,

We are conducting some research on Asterina starfish at my university. Does anyone have any that they would be willing to sell or perhaps know of a source of the starfish that I can contact? Thank you.

Clownfish spit out and not eating

I purchased Spotcintus Clownfish pair on wednesday 3/22/17. I have tried to feed the pair a pellets. I know the pellets is small enough for them to eat because I have small three stripped damselfish and eat the same size of pellets. Then I tried to feed my old mysis shrimp (been outside the package cube maybe have been defrost and froze again) and they still spit out the mysis shrimp. What should I do? I have tried to feed them for 4 days and they just spit out the food. My tank is 25g and it has been running for 14 months. It is the only fish in the tank right now. I have 55 gallon tank still in progress and hasn't been running yet. I will move the clownfish pair once the tank is running. The only tankmate is the skunk cleaner shrimp. lol

Thanks ahead

Snowflake Eel Compatibility

Hey all,

I am thinking about getting a small snowflake eel for my 75g reef tank. I currently have 3 small misc. corals, 3 damsels, a scribbled rabbitfish, a black cap jawfish and 3 shrimp (peppermint, fire and skunk cleaner). My biggest concern is obviously the shrimp, they are all fairly large right now. I would also worry about the jawfish since he likes in a lot of the same places the eel would? Like I said, I was thinking about getting a small eel to start. Let me know your thoughts!

Thanks!

Water Flow Help

Hi, I would like some help with water flow, I was thinking of moving my PH's to the back facing frontwards.. I have 2 MP10's running Reef simulation at about 50%. so any ideas?
Here's a link to the video since I can't seem to upload it here.

A relaxing Sunday

Top of the morning Friends, and.....HAPPY SUNDAY! Of course there's plenty of fresh Dunkin Donuts on a Sunday to go with our coffee and pink milk. After my first week back at the boatyard under my belt, we're thinking of a full out, no holding back, 'suck-it-up buttercup', day filled with the most nothingness we can conceivably squeeze into it. If the rains pass us by of course something on the ole grill, but if'n we get soaked....well, there'll be something else for dinner. I hope there's nothing but groovyness in everyone's future for the day ahead, and wishing all the best,

Hermite crab dying/dead... help

Hi All,

I am fairly new to this hobby and have just finished cycling a 10g nano. Yesterday I added a peppermint shrimp, emerald crab and a red legged hermit.

After acclimating them and putting them in the tank after about 5 hours the emerald crab was on his back and the hermit crab looked fine and was moving around.

After a few more hours the emerald was back upright and moving and the hermit cam out of his shell, rolled onto his back and looked like he was trying to molt?

I left them over night and the hermit is still out of his shell and now there are no signs of movement at all so I am assuming he has died? The emerald has stayed in the same place all night but appears to be moving.

Oh and the shrimp has stayed in hiding but seems to be ok.

What could of happened here?

Tank specs:

Amm - 0
No2 - 0
No3 - 10
O2 - 10
Alk - 8
PH - 8
Salinity 1.0245

I checked with my LFS and their salinity was at 1.025 so not far off of mine at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have left the hermit in the tank in the vein hope he is malting and may get up and move still....

strange creatures in tank

Hi everyone,

Once I stirred the sand, I saw several little worms with small legs. You can see in the attached picture. Do they remind you something? Could they be beneficial for the tank, or shall I take them out?

Thanks!

Mushroom Reproduction

Hello Everyone!

My mushroom corals were my first corals I put in my tank, and I think one of them might finally be growing another coral, after 5 months! Here is a picture!

I had some family who loves his little personality.... I lean to that's to much.... but I would like a community opinion lol ty

How long for bio pellets to take effect

Hi there, I have a 90 gallon reef tank. Mixed with SPS, and LPS. I currently have 5 fish. A small tomini tang, tanaka pygmy wrasse, scissortail dartfish, blue assessor and pink skunk clownfish. About 3 weeks ago I purchased a BR 110 reef octopus bio pellet reactor with BRS brand pellets. The dosage they call for is basically 1 cup per 50 gallons of water. So my tank is 90 gallon total volume so I cut the dosage in half and went with only a 3rd of a cup total. So not much. I used a entire 10 ML bottle of Korallen Zucht Zeobak (bacteria booster) per BRS guidance. Then about 2 weeks later I put a few more drops from a new bottle directly into the reactor (per BRS advice). I had to take my UV sterilizer off line...and I did notice some cyano breaking out...however I took a tooth brush to it and the outbreak seems to have gone away...plus I was out of town for two weeks and my GF over feed my tank so nitrates climed up to 25...did some water changes and got them down to 7-10ish. Anyways I'm not noticing my nitrates move down any really...maybe not climb as fast...I know on the BRS website it says not to touch the reactors for the first month or 2...do you guys think I should add maybe a quarter of a cup of pellets to the reactor or leave it alone for a bit. I also run filter socks, and a K120 Ice cap skimmer, fyi. I also have the output line of the skimmer intake port next to it per the directions...yalls thoughts? O and flow is cranked up on the reactor and a very nice tumble...

Heater controller?

I have 2 eheim jager heaters for my 75 galling tank. They seem like they hold a constant temperature for a few weeks then have to be adjusted again and can be very finicky as far as where I want the temperature at. I was looking at heater controllers but don't really know what to look for or look at. Do you guys have any suggestions? I don't want to spend a ton of money on it. Thanks in advance for the replies.

Newbie with some questions

Hello! I have been reading and stalking TRT for a while now. There is so much great information and opinions. I stated out with a 55 gal freshwater planted tank. It has been up and running successfully for a few years now so I decided to try my hand at a saltwater tank. So far things seem to be going pretty well. I do have a question about algae, cuc and stocking but first let me tell you about my tank:

36 gallon
RODI water
30ish pounds live rock
~1 in live sand base
Protein skimmer
3 powerheads for flow
10% h2o change every week
It has been running for 4 months

2 clownfish
1 yellow clown goby
2 nassarius snails
3 nerite snails

one large rock covered in Zoas - all open and happy looking

Overall I think things are going pretty well, I have some brown algae that the snails are keeping in check. I have coralline algae starting to cover the rocks. I noticed today a few clumps of hair algae. So my questions are:

1. should I add something to my cuc to take care of the hair algae? Its such a small amount right now that I'm worried any additional cuc might starve once it's gone. Is this just part of the "uglies," would it be best just to work on getting rid of it myself?

2. as for stocking I would like to add a green clown goby and a royal gramma. Is this too much? I also wondered about adding a lawnmower blennie. As that might take care of some algae too but I'm worried that might be overstocking.

Thanks for any input and recommendations!

A showery seashore Saturday

Good morning Friends, and....HAPPY SATURDAY! A house full of 'FINALLY' sleeping children, so a nice quiet breakfast to go....Assorted Pop-Tarts and Carnation instant breakfast - 'Milk chocolate' to go with our coffee and pink milk to get out the door. Looking at a half day today, hopefully, then the rain is supposed to move in, and looks like on and off for a couple weeks will be with us. But calling for a high of 70, though on the water will be more like 60 or so. Hope all are safe, and cozy, and all the best to all,

Herbie overflow bulkhead/pipe sizing question

tl/dr: I am running a herbie overflow in a 55 gal tank, I have 3/4 inch bulkheads that I cannot replace, but I want to run 1" pvc piping in an attempt increase my flow. Will this increase the flow at all(even slightly?), or will this 1" pipe make it harder to create a siphon due to the 3/4 inch bulkhead chokepoint? Would it be beneficial to use 1" pvc above the bulkhead in the overflow and 3/4 inch pvc after the bulkhead?

Hey everyone, I have been lurking for the past 2 months, researching on how to build my first reef tank. I do have one question I was hoping I could get answered. First here is some info on my set up:

I have a 55 gallon "tall" tank(dimensions are somewhere around 36" across, 22" tall, 18" deep), this sits on a stand about 3 feet tall. I intend to have a herbie overflow system in this tank. I have a corner overflow, purchased from my local pet store, glued into place. The tank was pre drilled with 2 holes when i bought it, sadly these holes will only fit 3/4 inch bulkheads, so 3/4 inch pvc piping is what I have been forced to use. This runs to a 15 gallon sump(all I can fit, it will have to do), an eshopps 120 protein skimmer, and a 4.0 sicci return pump. Lastly I have about 4 feet of 1" spa flex for my return line. If there is any more info that may be needed please let me know.

SO now here lies my issue: When i went to set all this up, my return pump's flow was much more than the inflow from the 3/4 bulkhead/pvc piping. I had my piping set up properly as far as herbies go, however the pump was going so fast I couldn't really mess around trying to get a siphon on the drain pipes. Since then, I have throttled the return pump by adding a gate valve to the spa flex, however I haven't tested this out yet because I am interested in increasing my tanks flow in general. Thus, here lies my question: Will using 1" pipe for my herbie system, despite my 3/4" bulkheads, help increase my tanks flow at all?(even slightly?), or will this 1" pipe make me worse off by making it harder to create a siphon due to the 3/4 inch bulkhead chokepoint? Would it be beneficial to use 1" pvc above the bulkhead in the overflow and 3/4 inch pvc after the bulkhead? I have had trouble finding exact answers to this question on any forums, which has forced me to finally register and become active in the community. I thank you all for any help you may provide in advance!

High nitrite - how to treat fast!

Hi everyone,

sorry about the double post, I meant to say high nitrite, not nitrate.
I am having an experience with my marine tank... I noticed one fish was not doing well, so I checked salinity and it was quite high (1.0265), even though 2 days ago it was 1.025! I wanted to fix this by adding freshwater and since I did not have RO water at that moment I added tap water with API stress coat conditioner. I know it was quite risky, since RO is the best way to go... But I wanted to save the fish from the high salinity levels and store was closed at that time. After that, I lost more fish...
First question is: how fast can you drop salinity? Let's say 0.01-0.02 points per hour/day?
Second question: My nitrite level got really high (it was zero before that, at all times)... How often can I do water changes to get rid of the dangerous nitrites? I already did 20% water change with pacific ocean water. Is it ok to do another 20% water change the same day, or better wait for next day?
I also added a conditioner that gets rid of nitrites and nitrates.
The reason I am in a rush is because I don't want to lose the rest fish!

Thanks a lot!

Advice on feeding

Hey guys,

Another quick question here.

My husband and I just added a pair clown fish, pajama cardinals, and a blenny to our tank. I've bought frozen brine shrimp and mysis shrimp to feed them as that is what my local fish store recommended. The fish love it, as well as my peppermint shrimp and crabs (they come out to get in on the action as well during feeding time).

What other food do you all recommend feeding as I've read that some people also feed flakes as well. I'm not sure what brands are best when it comes to flakes, as well as how often I should feed with the frozen shrimp. So far I've been feeding them in the early evening, that seems to be when they start begging for food in the tank. I tried a morning feeding and no one was really interested.

Thanks so much!

Drop-Off Tank Build - Episode 5: Pump Install + Which Skimmer Should We Use?

I thought i was alone and unhealthy.....

Well I'm admittedly new at reef tanks, and all I've been doing so far is curing some live rock and coral. i havent even filled my 75 gallon tank yet, and I'm already losing sleep and obsessing over every parameter i have control over so far. tell me this is normal and I'm not losing my mind. Im also already growing some fun things, if anyone could help me identify them id greatly appreciate it. no water tests yet.

Friday all day!

Good morning, TRT!

Coffee is ready, slug-a-beds ;) Bagels, both savory and sweet are on the table, along with cream cheese, butter, and all sorts of jams. PB, too. Oh, and fresh fruit.

Gotta get this going before someone else chimes in for duty.

Lots of love and hugs and peace to everyone!

Yellow sponges starting to randomly pop up live rock...

Is this normal? My tank has been up for about two years now and these sponges (at least I think that's what they are) have randomly started popping up on my rocks here and there.

Is this a bad sign?

What is THIS?

I've seen this critter twice now. It's almost white and is smaller than a dime. I have lots of Asterinas in my tank...is this one? I tried to take it out with tweezers, but didn't get a good hold on it, so I'm hoping it isn't a coral eater. :).

Thanks

Sump

I have a 20 gal laying around and decided I'd like to use it as a sump for my 20 gal tank. Thinking of going for a refugium in this but would like suggestions, thanks :).

Cycling

Hey reefers I have a question? My ammonia dropped to around .5 ppm and my nitrite is now at .5-1ppm and nitrates are of the scale. I'm on day 13 or 14 of the cycle. I seeded with live rock from my lfs and now I have what I do believe is diatoms but only on the rocks I acquired from an established tank. Also I have specs of coralline algae everywhere. Is my cycle going well? Fishless cycle.

The leaky sump or not...

Last night their was water on the floor..............either my new sump or my RODI reservoir. Made a water change to empty the RO and set it aside. clean up and dry it and put towels to see if water would continue to leak from the sump. I was hoping not................this means another **** set back. got to empty the sump and go yell at Canus Ottawa for either a new one or repair. But i can't tell from where exactly yet. I know the general area, but who knows . Should i ask for a new one???

How long can i run my tank without a sump and skimmer i have only one fish in a 150 G tank and a few corals. how long do you think. Thanks

Thursday!

Good morning my TRT Friends, and.....HAPPY THURSDAY! And am sure Mark will come up with a far cooler pic than I could, so I'll wait for his. Scrambled egg sandwiches to go with our coffee and pink milk to get us started. No where near as windy today, but still cool at the shore.....shooting for 45 and sunny. Plans are to get our first boat of the season in the creek today to break up the 'choke', and making it easier to begin launchings. I hope all are doing well, and have great things ahead for their day, and all the best,

Help on ATS Light

I have my 29g tank up and running, it just completed its cycle and I finally decided on adding an ATS. My biggest issue was space, my stand can literally only hold a 5g tank, but I wanted something bigger. After a few "failures" (my that I mean wife not approving) I just bit the bullet and went with the 5g tank inside the stand. The father in law built the stand so modifications were not much of an option, and the wife didn't approve of a satellite 20g for my sump, and the above the tank/HOB was too noisy.

So to my present issue and hopefully my last: My sump takes up too much space and I need to figure out lighting for my ATS that can fit and be effective. I have yet to glue the PVC for the ATS together in case someone has better input.

The ATS will be fed off the return pump via a T connection and ball valve. My screen size is 3x4 to give me 12square inches, equaling one cube of food per day.
My fish stock will include 1x O. Clown, 1x Firefish, 1x Royal Gramma, 1x Goby, 1x Skunk Shrimp, various inverts for CUC, and probably a Maxima Clam. The corals will my LPS dominant, and a few SPS.

So to get to my lighting issue, from my understanding I will need to light this with about 12w, I think I am going to light one side only because I still think my screen is a little larger then I need. I have about 3~5 square inches of space to get a light in there. Shop lights and brooding lights I have seen are too large. I thought about a simple book light style but I need something I can control with a timer. I'm thinking DIY LED but I have no idea where to begin. So yeah my brain is fried and I need some advice. If any of you guys have a suggestion, know of a decent light, is there any premade LEDs that I can stick somewhere that will grow? Idk. I want to keep this under $25. Any input would be great.

Bubble or not

Not sure if this is bubble algae I haven't been able to match it online. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks [IMG][IMG]http://http://www.thereeftank.com/gallery/files/9/1/2/6/6/img_0158.jpg

anemones Which one to get?=?

Hey guys, I've been recently looking into getting an anemone for a clown. My tank is established for 2 years (but still have algae outbreak :( ) I'm looking into getting a rbta anenome. I'm very hesitant because I've heard they can move and kill corals. If they like the location will they stay there? If rbta are to much of a risk what nem will be better fixed? I have 2 mars aqua (300 watt) 90 gal tank. I'm planning on putting the nem to the far right corner of the tank and make a little wall that he would have to climb over. If there's a better nem plz suggest. Oh and the other coral I have are a birds nest, gps, kenya, zoa, hollywood stunner, hairy mushroom, clam, pulsing.

p.s my tank is about to become empty after an ich attack, have 1 fox in there.

I'm back

Hello all, I'm back after several months. I left because of a life decision I made to get out of a situation that I was in and really that's all I can say without getting into details.

Unfortunately I do not return with my tank. I made my tank as easy as possible to maintain while I was gone and trusted my roommate who is also into the hobby to take care of it. For one reason or another (and another) my tank of 2.5years that has had fish and coral living in it for the whole time and the tank itself in a healthy condition crashed within 24 hours a few weeks after I left. Everything died within that time, or at least that's what I was told...

So I'm sad about not returning to a tank but that won't get me down, I love the hobby and I'll have another system up soon enough.

It's good to be back, have a nice day!

Current Orbit IC.. Thoughts?

Does anyone have an experience with this light? was thinking of buying 1 for my Nano that I am setting up with the intentions of only growing Softies and LPS.

Worth the money?

N00b cycling question

So, I have been cycling for the about 3 weeks now. Ammonia never soikedd over 2ppm and now nitrite and ammonia have been at .25 for the last 3 days. Nitrate is about 20 ppm. Water change or not to water change? Here is my current set up:

55g DT
50lb dry rock
5lb live rock (in sump) from LFS
Chaeto (added about a week ago)
I've been spending tons of money on nitrifying bac design every day
Started with live sand
Also have a bio media filter with ceramic media

So will a water change speed this process up? Do I just need to wait? Is there a ridiculous ammonia spike In my near future? What is actually going on here?

Source of Chloroquine

In case any of you are looking for a source of chloroquine for treatment of ich, velvet, or several other diseases, Sigma-Adrich chemical company sells the reagent grade chemical in the diphosphate salt for $60 for 25 grams.

I'm currently using it to QT an angel at 12 mg/L and it seems to be tolerating it well.

High ammonia, high nitrates, but no nitrites

Just tested my water again today, and found that my nitrites dropped to almost nothing. Two days ago, ammonia was at 0.25ppm ish, nitrite was 5ppm, nitrates where around 40-50ppm. Ammonia and nitrates are about the same, nitrites are the only thing that dropped. This is my first saltwater tank setup (3 weeks old today); it is a 5 gal with live rock and sand. Have been trying to get my salinity down as well, which is perfect today. However, last night, I added more water to reduce the salt readings. The water has also been slightly cloudy for the past 1-1.5 days. Adding to the list, there is a cloudy film on top of the water, which I had a week ago, but it disappeared when I changed from an old HOB filter to a new one. I dont have a skimmer, but now I am considering. Does the nitrites, cloudiness, and film have anything to do with one another? Why are the nitrites gone, but ammonia is not? Thanks for the help in advance!

Upgraded JBJ 12G Nano Cube/ getting out of hobby sale

I'm getting out of the hobby for several reasons, mainly for the fact that I will be moving across the country in May. For sale is my entire reef tank setup, from the tank, live stock, and equipment in it to the buckets, water containers, and misc equipment for maintenance. I will copy paste from my craigslist add, since I don't think linking you to it would be the best bet...

Quote:

I'm moving in May across the country and can't take the reef due to time and needing to restart from scratch from having to move everything over a 2 week period. Thus, I am selling all of my stuff from the hobby for a steeply discounted price. The tank is a JBJ 12 Nano Cube on a wooden square table with small drawer. The pump has been upgraded to a maxi jet 900. The lighting has now been retrofitted with a non dimmable Rapid LED 12 Cree LED fixture. It will include the 3 sponges in the back as well as the well sized heater. There is one small problems in this tank , a crack in the light fixture clear covering, however I have seen no moisture in the fixture in the 4 1/2 years it has been there (I set down the box too hard in my excitement upon purchase).

But wait theres more! Not only do you get the reef ready setup, you may also have all of my live stock (Pistol Shrimp, Goby, Tuxedo Urchin, and several hermit crabs), liverock and substrate if you so desire to keep it! Finally, I will be including all of my gear along with it, which includes, but not limited to, two 5 gallon buckets, two 5 gallon water containers, refractometer, hydrometer, air/water pump, reef pellet food, 2 sets each of frozen mysis and plankton, flake food, water siphon, fish nets, water testing supplies for nitrates, calcium, ph, and kh, and bags of carbon to throw in the back chamber.
I'm located in Knoxville, TN and can meet anywhere within an hour radius if necessary. Everything down to the surge protectors and light timers are coming with it. Asking price is 400$ for everything.

https broken?

FYI: started getting https warning recently.

Cycling

I have been cycling for 9 days now. 5 days ago I added pure ammonia to get the cycle going. Ammonia shot up to 4-5ppm. Nitrites were 0 as well as the nitrates. Now on day 9 ammonia is at 1-2ppm. My nitrites are 2-3ppm and nitrates are a whopping 40-50ppm on only day 9? I stopped dosing with ammonia to just see and wait for levels to fall to 0 on nitrite and ammonia. I've seeded with 10lbs of live rock from an established tank. Also have around 70-80lbs dry rock. I've been using seachem stability and also have 40-50lbs of black caribsea live sand. Is the cycle going correctly? I figured I would have not seen nitrates so high so fast also I used my RO/DI filter to fill tank and using instant ocean reef crystals salt.

Back at em Monday

Good *orning TRT Friends, and.....HAPPY *ONDAY! Buttermilk waffles to go with our coffee and pink *ilk to get us out of the door this *orning. Sunshine and 50's, should be a good day to get back at it. Hope all are doing well, and have a great day chasing great stuff,

Nitrite reactor & levels

Hi guys, i want to ask your thoughts because I am still a beginner and hopefully somebody expert can point me in the right direction.

I have a 55 gal tank, about 80-100Lbs of LR, different (begineer) corals (candy coral, frogspawn,...) and 8 fish (2 tangs, 2 Damsel, 2 clown, 2 angel), 1 serpent sea star, and 1 banded shrimp, plus some turbo snails.

Because of very low space I cannot have a sump, so the current skimmer is attached to the back (Octoplus BH2000). I have 2 x HYDRA Twentysix HD going from 2% to 60% in a daily cycle (6am - 10pm).

I do a 20% water change every 2 weeks. I have had this tank for about 4-5 years now.

I feed the fish twice/day, in the morning (ON Formula Two Pellets) and the evening (frozen shrimp with spirulina).

Here are some issues:
1 - For few months now I have noticed a surge in Pulsing Xenia, which with my surprise I can't get rid of, no matter how hard i try. It seems to be very strong to kill.

2 - almost every 2-3 weeks there is an outbreak of cynobacteria which i battle with chemipure. It goes away for some time then it's back.

3 - Recently I bought a feather duster and another tang: the tang has died after 2 days, while the feather duster is inside the shell most of the time.

I have tested the water with the Quick Deep but it all seemed ok, so I recently bought Hanna's Nitrite and Alkaline tests; it reads:

Nitrite: 14ppm
Alacaline: 4.6 DkH.

What do you think is going on?

I cannot install a sump because of space, do you think I should get a nitrite reactor? Would that resolve the problem?

Hitchhiker ID needed

Hello everyone! Been a while since I've been on here...noticed these guys today. There's about 4-5 coming out of the same rock. Any insight is appreciated! Thanks all

New tank and levels

Hello...
I just started my saltwater aquarium about a month ago and im having trouble with the testing results being constant. I have a 60 gallon tank 48x24x12 with 25lbs of live rock and 25lbs of base rock with 40lbs of live sand. I have 1 blue tang, 2 clown fish, 1 royal gramma, 1 blue damsel, 4 emerald crabs, 4 hermit crabs, 2 cleaner shrimp, 1 banded coral shrimp, 3 snails.

I have attached a photo with my testing results and they are all over the place. Im not sure what's going on and any help would be awesome

Cycling with bare bottom

I was thinking about setting up a 30 gallon that I got cheap. I was wondering about cycling it. I have cured live rock that I was gonna put in it from my existing tank. Does it even need to cycle? If it does I'm guessing it will only take a couple of days. Correct? I know there's tons of info about cycling everywhere but i can't seem to find any threads with BB tanks and cured live rock.

Hi Admin and all

Hi Everyone Just a quick intro. I am new to reef aquariums but had tropical aquarium about 30 years ago which I had a few years of enjoyment from. Back then keeping a reef aquarium was only for the specialists as it was so complexed and very expensive. After a trip to my local LFS Abyss Aquatics Wharehouse last weekend I have now discovered its not so much a dark art anymore and its possible with the right equipment, time and devotion to revive my love of aquariums. Just thought I would join your group to tap into the vast amount of subject knowledge available from you all within this group. Thanks

Beautiful Sunday

("Just heard Daniel Boone in the back of my head singing that song, so what the heck.") Good morning my TRT Friends, and......HAPPY SUNDAY! Up early because Brother Bob will be here shortly for our coffee tradition, and then getting ready for church. There'll be Dunkin Donuts to go with our coffee and pink milk for early grab and go's, so please help yourself. Today's plans are looking like there'll be weather steered, but if'n it behaves sounding like a 'RIB'-B-Q is in our plans for the afternoon. Hope all are safe and well, and have enjoyment ahead of them, and all the best,

So... I made a copepod murder house

Thought I'd share a little goof on my part.

Was looking real close to see if I had any pod production in the new sump.

I have an algae scrubber over a fuge with live rock that I was hoping would be a great breeding ground, but I didn't really see any. Then my eye caught one little critter heading out of the rubble... then SLURP, right up into the skimmer.

On further inspection I realized that my skimmer intake blocks the only way out of the fuge (the other three sides are sealed off with sections of glass with a channel leading to the return pump behind).

I'm going to reconfigure.... but I had to stop and laugh at myself for a bit. :arg:

Clown fish won't host an anenome

My clown fish will not host my anenome. How long does it normally take for a clown to host a anenome. The whole purpose of me getting a saltwater tank was to have "nemo" live in a anenome.

Too much of a good thing?

Good news... bad news. Tank was set up on 12-3-16. Went through a serious stage of hair algae. It was everywhere and long! Now it is all gone and the coraline algae has been growing like crazy on everything, including the glass. It doesn't come off the glass with the magnet cleaner, and there are already scratches on the glass from the previous owner (bought the tank used).

I don't want the coraline algae to start distorting the view into the tank, even though it is a pretty color. What is the best way to keep it off the glass? Razor blade it off?

Foxface hiding??

I added a Spotted Foxface on 2-24-17. At first he was very shy and hid in the live rock the first day or so. He camouflaged often and seemed a bit scared, especially if anyone was close to the tank. After a couple of days he got more brave, and after a week he was greeting me for food and out most of the time.

About 3-4 days ago he went back to the way he was when I first got him. He seems healthy and is eating, but is not out swimming around like he was when he got comfortable. Nothing has changed. I haven't added any other livestock to the tank and the water parameters are exactly as they have been for months.
Ammonia - 0
Nitrites - 0
Nitrates - 0
PH - 8.2
Phosphate - 0
Calcium - 460
KH - 8

Is it normal for this behavior?

Livestock progression

As a noob here with a just-getting-started tank (although we used what I think is really good purple rock and Caribbean reef sand, so it's got a head start), I'd really appreciate hearing the opinions of those who know (you all!) regarding livestock progression.

I've got a Red Sea 650 in which I put four clowns yesterday to start things off. I want to end up with a solid, stable, healthy tank, obviously. My LFS guys will be coming by every two weeks for the next year to monitor water quality and take care of the tank, so I'm not doing this solo. I want to do it right.

That being said, what are your opinions regarding stocking the tank? A fish a month? Corals after X number of months? I keep hearing at least 6 months for an anemone, what about clams? My LFS guy says "slow and steady wins the race," and I believe him. How slow? How steady? Thanks in advance!

Hello!

I am finally getting my dream of a reef tank off the ground. It might sound a bit lame to call it a dream, but it really is. I have planned, shopped, loitered at the LFS, read and read and read, and lurked on the interweb forums for between 10 and 15 years. I had a FW tank for most of that time, but didn't want to get a SWT until I could do it right.

So I finally reached a point where I had space and funds for a Red Sea 650. I love it! I really want to do it right. Take my time and build a tank that my grandkids can enjoy some day. Here's a pic of the tank and of it's initial population:

Clowns

Hi all. I've dreamed for many years of having a reef tank. It's finally happening, and I was beyond thrilled to get my first inhabitants yesterday: four clowns. They are beautiful and fun to watch.

Here's my question: they seem to spend most of their time in a small clot in one specific corner of the tank. It's a big tank, a Red Sea 650, and I'm just wondering: do clowns normally huddle in a corner rather than roam or hang out in the LR?

Thanks!

Snowy Saturday

Morning all. Going to say hi to Denise before she crashes in between 16 hour shifts, then off to my old house I was renting. Fixing one window and door latch, then handing the keys off and done with that dead horse to carry around.

I-71 was crazy driving home from the airport yesterday. It was just mixed snow, but some people must be driving on slicks or something. I put snow tires on the Sentra to ensure safe travel to the airport at the weird hours necessary.

Late to the party, but going to cook up corned beef today with rutabagas and parsnips and cabbage.

Enjoy your Saturday everyone. Coffee is on.

Looking for a magnetic reliable powerheads

I'm looking for 2 or more reliable powerheads that have a magnetic backing outside of the tank so it doesn't look so cluttered. It's going to be in my 120 gallon reef I'm setting up and I'm looking for something cheaper than Ecotech MP series's and I didn't really care for the Gyres so any other suggestions? Thanks!

Strange pink rock?

So this is week 2.5 of my first SW tank. It is a 5 gal tank with HOB filter and top fin power head. Live rock and live sand installed day 1. Ammonia levels are around 0.3 ppm, nitrites are 5.0 ppm, and nitrates are 50 ppm. I think I'm on the down side of the cycle, as the ammonia has been slowly dropping.

So this morning, everything was normal in the tank. After returning from work this evening, there is a small (almost sand grain sized) pink colored rock in the middle of the tank. The picture is bad, but the rock is vivid pink; and when the light is turned off, it is still pink.

Does anybody have a clue as to what this might be? No one touched the tank while I was gone, so it originated from the tank. Do I have a rare coral that magically started to grow in my tank? Some type of critter?

Thanks for the help!
