Ok so just to preface, I'm the kind guy who likes to have confirmation from others on what I think I know.
My QT has been cycling since 12/5/14 using just ammonia and no live rock. On 12/25/14, nitrites showed up pegged out on API kit. Nitrates were at 5 and jumped to 20 on 01/05/15. Today nitrites are still 2-5 (hard to tell).
My DT was done with live rock so it went much quicker. I last added ammonia on 01/05/15 to keep it fed and dosed to 2ppm. 36 hours later it was down to 0.25.
I'm fairly certain I just need to wait more to see the nitrites go down, but as I said before my DT was much faster in cycling and this is my first non live rock cycled tank. I've read you can stall the cycle by adding too much ammonia which I don't think I did.
Again, thanks for any responses. I love this site.
