Skimmer overflowing water !!

I recently bought a Hydor Performer Protien skimmer 405 for my 150 gallon tank. I connect it to my power head that blows 300 gph. Well once I connected it it started skimming way to fast it looked like the water was just going staight up all the way past the neck of the skimmer. I've tried tuning it I've put it to the lowest for the water and air controller and it still overflows. Is it bc the pier head is to strong for the skimmer?
