Birdsnest Bleached

I'm having issues with my birdsnest. Everything started after a rather extensive tank cleaning session. I had gotten a more than a little behind and was scrubbing off rocks in the tank (i.e. pulling them out and going over them with a old toothbrush). This is nothing that I haven't done before with no problem. The only thing I did differently was I pulled out my birdsnest to get at a few bits of algae growing at it's base. Now it was out of the water for 2 minutes tops. So there are a couple of factors here.

1. Big clean up of tank probably released lots of nutients into water

2. Bird nest exposed to air for 1-2 minutes.

3. Water change (5gal in a 55 gal tank) was a little on the fresh side (~30ppt). But the tank was on the salty side anyway. Again have done this before.

4. This is an established tank and all parameters stay within normal limits.

Anyway, the results of this episode are as follows

1. Next day birdnest had gone from brilliant pink to pale pink

2. over next two day it had gone completely white.

3. about 1 week after everything it now has film algae growing on top of it's tissue and weirdly two tiny vermilid snails.

I've never had a coral go down hill this fast and I'm really unsure how to procede. Up to this point my plan had been to target feed with cyclopeeze twice a week until color came back. Obviously, soemthing more agressive is needed. A couple of toughts I had were.

1) Try a dip with lugol's to hopefully kill off the algae/vermilids

2) relocate to a low light area to deter algae growth.

Any other suggestions? Any thoughts on what caused this?
