Hello fellow reefers. I justed wanted to share my seeming victory over the ugly plague of bryopsis. I am not speaking of hair algae, but rather the feathery type that is some of the most stubborn algae I've ever encountered. In my searches of dealing with bryopsis, it seems some confuse it with hair algae and this could be the reason for losing the algae battle. I used the Kent Marine Tech M method and with persistence it appears this stuff actually works. I started with manual removal, trying to catch every little piece floating around by hand or with a net. Then raised the mag level to around 1800 over about a week and a half. Some showed signs of whitening, but most of it was still growing green. I maintained this level for about a month continuing manual removal every week. It still was growing...slower, but growing. I couldn't stand letting my tank go without a water change for so long so changed 10 gallons of my 40 breeder and continued dosing mag. This stuff was still growing. I decided to stop using gfo thinking that perhaps the gfo could be removing the magic trace material in tech m that is supposed to attack bryopsis. So continued dosing over the next month raising my mag level to today's tested level at 2500! I know that this seems outrageously high, but the tank is doing ok. My snails have taken a hard hit, most of them dying, but fish and corals seem to be fighting along with me. Today the only trace of this algae is a few strands that are clinging for dear life. This ugly stuff was smothering my tank, on nearly every rock and even growing in the sand and today my tank is looking beautiful once again. I also found that rearranging rock-fippling them upside down, moving them, increasing flow and sump detritus removal in combination with manual bryopsis removal and high tech m levels, this algae has finally met it's match. I'm not saying jack your mag level to 2500, because I really don't want to say that is safe for your tank and it's inhabitants. That's just what worked for me. I plan to keep these levels up till there is not a strand left and probably a week or two beyond that and bring it back down to 1350-1400 through gradual water changes. I guess only then, after weeks at normal levels can i truly say I have beat you bryopsis. It seems many fight this stuff and lose and feel hopeless to the point of giving up. Keep fighting diligently and I can say for me, Tech M is the frontline on this war.
