I have recently acquired a Chysurs angelfish, and it started crunching on all my sps. I have read many articles and no-one have found a solution to get them to stop attacking coral. So I have been experimenting with many concepts on how to stop my anglefish from attacking coral. I thought I would share my findings for anyone that has a similar issue just in case it could help.
I first started to come up with my strategy to "save" my coral, when I was feeding my tank nori. I realized that during feeding and for about 30 minutes after feeding, my anglefish wouldn't even consider eating my coral. So I started to experiment with small sps frags. I would take 3 sps frags and cover half of the frag with nori to see if the angle would go after the nori over my sps. The following day I checked the frags and the frags along with all my sps were untouched and all of the nori was gone. This lead me to conclude that my angelfish preferred macro-algae over sps coral. So I then placed the sps frag back on the frag rack and place a sheet of nori about 12" away from my coral. When I checked the tank the next day all of the nori was gone and the corals were once again untouched. But I couldn't leave nori in the tank 24-7 because it would start to fall apart and get all soggy. So I drove down to an old pier near my house (I live in Brooklyn NY) and collected some sea lettuce from the harbor. After acclimating all of the sea lettuce I cut it up into pieces that we about 1x3 inch. I then planted one of those pieces on my rock work, placing them about 7-12 inches away from each other. I also grow this in my refugium to replace as it is eaten in my tank. I have been doing this for the past week and my anglefish and dwarf angelfish that would usually be nipping at my coral have left it alone. I hope this helps for anyone that is having a similar issue.:p
