...sure wish I'd read it about 4 months ago, when I started out.
I bought a 40b with 40 pounds of "live" sand and two LR chunks from my LFS. I added an ammonia source and filled with tap water treated with Prime (switched to RODI about 2 months ago). I eventually got another 30 pounds of "florida reef rock" from ReefCleaners, put it in the tank and started to add CUC. Since then, I added a royal gramma, two clown and a banggai cardinal. I've seen a few critters - including a fair number of pink bristleworms, a little starfish, pods, etc. There is also an assortment of weird stuff, peculiar stuff and strange stuff in there.
I didn't know that I needed to siphon sand (I didn't know ANYTHING) until I started reading the Big Bad 119-page Thread that Geoff started six years ago, and since then I have begun to take better care of my critters.
Unfortunately, two days after my first siphon job turned the water cloudy for an hour, my royal gramma disappeared. He went into his hole and never came out again. Looks like some big bristleworms live in his home now :(
One of my coworkers just gave me a Filstar XP2 filter, and once I figure out what parts I need I plan to replace my HOB filter. Up next... throwing myself on the mercy of TRT for advice and assistance.
Based on my reading, I'm best off planning for a lagoon-type, eutrophic reef tank. I don't think I want to go BB because I already have the sand, but I understand that I'll need to replace sand periodically.
First: I would like to eventually have anemones and coral in here, but I'm not 100% certain of how to go about adding them, or how to pick lagoon-type fauna. Is there a good thread on here listing what can be added to that kind of tank?
Second: I don't have a sump or a skimmer. Adding a sump seems unlikely at this point, but what about a skimmer? For a 40 gallon tank, is 5 gallons of weekly water change enough instead of that? Or 5 twice a week?
