I'd like to get some input on other's experiences with well water and running a reef tank. Particularly how big of a tank you run, if youve noticed anything out of the ordinary and the condition of your water coming out of the tap. Also how your RO filter has held up and how long.
Last year, I moved to a place that had well water. The water in this area is so bad that it stains the toilets, showers and sinks orange to the point that you can't remove the stain. I'm not talking about an orange tinted stain, this is full blown orange turning into brown stain. On the places that its building up, you can run your finger across it and feel that its raised.
Before we moved I had a 75 gallon display with probably at least another 75 gallon sump. I have an RO filter for water but I was afraid to set the 75 up so I opted to put everything in a 30 gallon cube Ive had. Since I made the decision, everything has just dwindled. I have 3 SPS corals left that out of 7. I only have 1 fish(clown). I had 2 peppermint shrimp, but they disappeared shortly after they went in. LPS all look fine and actually look like theyre thriving. Very noticeable growth since Ive been here(1 year now).
My filter is still holding on and hasnt clogged but I havent had the chance to measure the TDS. One thing I do notice is this flaky, jelly like red growth that I havent been able to identify.
