I was at my local aquarium shop and I asked if I could put some crabs, shrimp, etc. into a brand new tank. No fish, just bacteria added to the substrate, nothing really for a cleanup crew to munch on. They said yes so I bought a bunch of critters and some frozen brine to give them something to snack on.
Well, all of them have been rather lethargic since I put them in about 14 hours ago. Most are hiding and one or two are perched on top of dead "live" rock that is in the process of being resuscitated, not foraging among the crushed coral.
Is that normal behavior for peppermint shrimp and crabs? Or was the tank environment not quite ready for these types of animals? I'm going back today with a water sample (just to check it anyway, not because of the crew behavior) but if I can get an answer before then I'd like to discuss their advice with them if it was wrong.
