Thinking of converting to sand

Long of the short, I'm considering removing my current substrate (gravel) to sand. My tank is about about 3 years old. It's 55 gallons and I'm running a wet/dry in which I'm slowly pulling out the bioballs at this point because my rocks are doing most of the filtration. I've got about 60 pounds of live rock. I've got two clowns and an anthias. I am looking into doing sand for a few reasons. I think it looks better and I've heard it can work better with a reef tank (which I plan on trying to convert to in the near future).

I'm actually preparing to move to a new house so I know I'm going to have to virtually empty may tank for the move. I figured this would be the ideal time to do a change since everything will be out. My biggest concern is what, if anything, this transition would do to my chemical levels. I don't know if anyone has done this and seen a bump in ammonia or anything else. I'm worried that the good bacteria currently living in my gravel is going to be gone and I won't have enough to pick up the slack in terms of filtration.
