I finally added 20 pounds of live sand to replace the substrate that has slowly been vacuumed out over the past 18 months. It cleared well and all inhabitants seemed to weather the storm pretty well. I tried to keep the duest to a min, but that is a tall order. Anyway, I tested my water this am and found measurable nitrates for the first time in 12 months. It was less than 5 so I am not worried about livestock, but have others found new nitrates after adding new sand? Just curious if I need to look further into things to explain the new findings....
