So i am 2 1/2 weeks into my 125g setup. The nitrogen cycle is complete and I am now seeing a diatom bloom. After reading "reefkeeping made easy" i found that the silica in the water is being used by diatomic algae which is the cause of the bloom. It also says that once the tank matures sponges will grow under the live rock and use up the silica instead of algae.
The rock I have was left over from old tanks and was cured so it is not "live" anymore. I seeded my tank with a couple of rocks from a friends tank but i didn't notice any sponges.
Will sponges show up anyway? Should I be concerned if they dont? Will the silica be removed from water changes?
