Clowns

So I figured out what I have for clowns I have an ora clownfish, a clarkii, and a true percula(I am pretty sure that is what it is) unfortunately the percula has been very aggressive to the clarkii and the ora clown, I contacted my lfs about it and he said he was willing to trade the three fish for 2-3" tomato clown pair, my clowns are only about 1.5" I want the bigger clowns but I don't really like the look of the tomato clowns. If I had to choose one to keep I would keep the ora. So the question is should I get the tomato clowns or keep the ora clown and get another for trade for my other two clowns(the clarkii and true percula) I also have kind of grown attached to the ora clown and the clarkii so I am at a loss on what to do. Because in the long run I would want the same species right? That is what everyone has said so far

De-Nitrification, does it shut down if NO3 rises too high?

Hi Guys,

It back in the dim and distant past I recall reading somewhere (around a decade ago) words to this effect:

Once nitrate levels have risen above a certain threshold, then the denitrification processes shut down.

Does anyone recall what article it was or by whom it was written? Has there been similar discussions on here? I can't recall if it fitted with my observations over the years or whether it was a bit of a revelation. It does explain certain things I've observed.

I also think the threshold was mentioned to be around 40ppm (mg/l).

Thanks

Chris

Wednesday wakeup!

Good mawnin', TRT!

Hmm...I think folks are holding back so there are no double threads on a day. :funny:

Coffee is ready. Oatmeat with raisins, brown sugar, cinnamon, and pecans Serve it up, and enjoy.

Huh! My 10 year old countertop microwave died yesterday. Guess it doesn't owe me anything. Let's see what I come up with from a big box store. At some point I would like to have a Super Pot or whatever you call it.

Lots of love and hugs and peace to everyone!

Final cycling with shrimp

Hi,
I have used a shrimp to cycle my tank, the tank was set up on the 1st Jan and the shrimp added on the 10th. The tank, 13 gallon nano, was set up with 7kgs of live rock. The ammonia level went high as did the nitrates, followed a week later by 0 ammonia, low nitrites and 0 nitrates, now I have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and high nitrates. I have not changed any water or run the skimmer during this time.
Am I right in thinking that the cycle is nearly complete and I should perform a 50% water change, PH and KH at present have fallen to 7.8 and 8.0 respectively. Should I also now take out the shrimp remains (in a nylon stocking) and turn on the skimmer, add activated carbon filter, light clean the tank and after checking parameters again add some clean up crew.
Thank you for your advice

First marine tank for years

I have a 13 gallon Boyu TL-450 tank with an uprated WG110 Boyu skimmer, tank currently cycling. 7 kgs of live rock although I believe the LFS had bleached the rock to kill all nasties before sale. The live rock purchased however was stored in a tank containing live fish. Fine coral sand about 1" thick, RO water with Red Sea Pro salt.

flow/particulate issue

I have a 180 gallon with corner overflows. 1 inch drains and 1inch returns running on a jebao dct 7000. I have two sw15s on opposite ends of the tank as well as a wp25 on the back wall. I'm running dual filter socks and filter floss in the bubble trap.
The problem is I have a considerable amount of particulate that seems to get stuck in the center of my tank just swirling round. it seems very little makes it to the overflow and into my sump. has anyone with a 180 with corner overflows had this is and how was it corrected? ive tried different angles and different pump on/off .

Strange things in strange places

Haven’t been around for a while since having to give up the tank. But I thought that all of you, being saltwater geeks and all, might find these things interesting.

I did not know there were coral reefs in Alaska. This piece of Red Tree Coral came up on a halibut long line near Kodiak. I thought it had drifted in a strange and impossible current. But nope... coral reefs in Alaska!

I caught this Opa by hand in the surf on the North Pacific Ocean. Quite a struggle, although it was mostly dead. Although a little alive and 80lbs is still hard by hand. I took off my waterproof gear so the picture would be pretty. It sure wandered a long way from its more tropical home. Had it lived, I would have run out for a 3k gallon tank!

Hope you and yours and your fishies are well.
Helen

LEDs and clams

I know clams tend to have high lighting requirements but i was wondering if anyone has successfully kept clams with LEDs and what type of clam worked best for them? I have never had a clam before but was thinking of adding one to my reef to add some vibrant color. I have fluval marine and reef 2.0 LED lighting and so far my corals have grown beautifully. However, i would rather upgrade lighting to be safe if i have to than waste money replacing a clam. Please only reply if you have successfully kept a clam with LEDs or if you started with LEDs and had to switch. Thank you :)

Good mawnin', TRT!

Coffee is on. Hot water for tea. Scones, bagels, and all the stuff to go along.

The plumber comes today at 9:00 - this guy arrives on time.

New dogs in the neighborhood are causing a ruckus. Yesterday there were 5 dogs running loose, so I called animal control. It was just before their closing time, and they didn't show up. Last night after 10:00 a loose dog was making noise and wandering around my front windows. I heard someone come to get the dog. Unlike anything I've heard here. Hope to find out what is going on today.

Lots of love and hugs and peace to everyone.

Coral light and placement, newbie to reef!

Hi all,
I need some advice as Im new to corals and just got a couple and they dont look great. I have a 3 head duncan frag that barely opens (2 weeks now, 2 spots in tank) and a pulsing xenia frag I dont know where to place (just 2 days old but looks miserable)

I have 2 black boxes on a FOWLR 220
https://www.amazon.com/VIPARSPECTRA-...ct_top?ie=UTF8

Are these lights sufficient? My tank is 6 feet long x 30 inches tall x 24 wide
The lights are dimmed at 40% blues and 20% whites and set about 4 inches above the water. The Duncan is middle/high in the tank (about a foot under the light and not directly under it) and medium flow -estimated par is like 300 to 400? and the Xenia is an inch or 2 off the sand bed directly under the light w low flow- maybe 200 par?

Temp 79/80, sal 1.025, nitrite/amon 0, nitrate 5 or less, cal 500. phosphates are high due to a tap water change when lfs had issues with their rodi water, I cant remember the test .15 maybe? but problem has been corrected and good rodi water again.

I target feed the duncan but it has barely come out, I tried it in a low flow spot and lower light, no change. What else can I do for it? The xenia I just dont know where to place? Thank you!

Fish stocking for a reef? Need a showstopper.

Hi all,
I have an under stocked 220 gallon. Originally the plan was for a FOWLR tank, then I started liking the inverts, then I started looking at corals... lol. So the tank has been running for a couple years with live rock and about a dozen or so fish plus some snails/hermits/shrimp +/- a fighting conch and a sand sifter star (if they are still in there, I never see them). I was given some hand down coral frags of a duncan and some pulsing xenia which got me interested in corals. I have about 100 other coral questions but for this particular thread, Im wondering about fish.

Originally I planned on a large angel or 2 as being the prizes of my tank, but with the addition of corals and a future nem, apparently I need a new direction? What large fish can I add to the tank? It will be a mixed reef with "easy" corals like toadstool leathers, xenia, birds nest, montipora etc but I still want fish to be prevalent, esp if I fail with the corals.
What are some big friendly bright fish I can add w those corals and my inverts? Also I like the choc chip starfish... are those out with corals? Thank you!

The tank is 6ft long x 30 tall x 24 wide
current stock: 2 carberyi anthias, 2 firefish gobies, sailfin blenny, pearlscale butterfly, flame angel, 2 bangaii cardinals, 1 pj cardinal, 2 clowns, 4 chromis, and a royal gramma.
1 cleaner and 1 coral banded shrimp
crabs/hermits

Skimmers

I am looking into the AquaC Remora protein skimmer and the reef octopus classic 100 hang on back protien skimmer... which is the better of the two?

JBJ ATO not operating as expected

Hey gang -
My JBJ ATO is acting up. When I have a full bucket and the sump level is too low the pump does not kick in unless I flip the mode selector up and down.

But, when both red lights are on, meaning sump and reservoir are low, I can pour a bucket into the reservoir and the pump kicks on, runs a little while and stops regardless of the depth of the sump. I get that it is not supposed to run for ever, but it never kicks back on...unless I toggle the mode selector.

Any ideas?

Hello

Hello we started to think about a year and a half ago and I'm pretty excited about the progress. Looking forward to reading posts and looking at pictures of other people's adventures! You'll find I'm a little cautious about my bragging about my own as I believe in Murphy's Law!

Difference between different rocks?

So I went to my LFS yesterday (the only one in town other than Petco and Petsmart) and was looking at the rocks and am confused on the differences. Unfortunately, the guy who was helping me didn't know too much and he said the guy who knows more wouldn't be in for quite a while so I've come here for help!

I took pictures of some of the different rocks and their prices and here's what I have:

Base rock $2.49/lb
Lace rock $2.59/lb
Liferock shelf $6.99/lb
Liferock original $5.89/lb
Liferock shapes $9.69/lb
Liferock branch $7.89/lb
Real reef live rock $9.99/lb currently on sale for $5.99/lb
Marco rock (I don’t know the price)

I'm about to start a tank and don't really know which rocks to get. The "real reef live rock" was the only stuff in a tank. Most of those were purple-ish. The various "Liferocks" were underneath and were also mostly purple-ish. What is this Liferock stuff? And how does it differ from base rock and lace rock, which are both tannish in color? There was also a big box of Marco rock, also tan in color. What is Marco rock?

I was planning on getting some live rock and some "base" (or dry?) rock but now I don't know exactly what is live and what is "base" after seeing these varieties.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cody

Small white cloud on a Trigger fish’s eye

Hello everyone,

I bought a Pink Tailed Triggerfish yesterday and introduced him with the drip method over about an hour or so and let him in the tank. When he got in the tank I noticed a small white cloud on one of his eyes and it almost looks like a piece of Mysis shrimp stuck to his eye, probably the best way to describe it. My ammonia was 0 when adding him in and has since gone up very slightly and my nitrite has stayed at 0, SG: 1.026 and temperature of 25°C.

A link to a video I made of him just now with the white cloud on his eye: https://youtu.be/Sg7zwBqaJYY

He’s eating and seems okay but I’m not really sure what it is and whether or not I should be worried about it... thanks for your help!

Hello Saturday!

Top of the morning to all our TRT Friends, and welcome to the weekend.....HAPPY SATURDAY! Mid 30's heading to near on 60......so looks like the right range in temps for me to go boating this morning. Dunkin Donuts piled up to support the sleepless over crowd to go with our morning, actually all day coffee. :D I bailed around midnight and the noise level was still up there, but snoring is all I hear at the moment. Jen keeps reminding me, and I keep forgetting that we have dinner with Squirt's future in-laws this evening......been there before, are nice Folks, and no 'putting on airs' required. HUH, good thing there! You can't squeeze a whole lot of 'air' into an old rust bucket like me. Heck Doug, if'n they have such a thing I may try a Glenfiddich 18 with conversations. ;) Hope today finds everyone safe and healthy and full of hope for groovy things ahead,

Suggested clean up crew?

Hey guys,

When is a good time in the initial cycle to add some CUC? And at what rate should they be added for a 30g tank? I haven't actually started the tank so I can't yet tell you my parameters ;)

75 Gallon Reef, Fish, Corals, Apex, Worth Over $2000 New - $900 (Athens, Ohio)

Pics are on my Craigslist Add: https://post.craigslist.org/manage/6474239644

I am sadly selling my 75 gallon reef tank due to a move across the country and I can not take it with me. I am asking 900for the whole setup and at the moment am not willing to split it up. I can remove the Neptune Apex controller for a decrease in price of $200, but I highly recommend keeping it with the tank. I will not sell just the Apex unless the tank sells without it. I have spent a lot of time developing this tank and I hate to see it go, but like I said it cant go with me. I am hoping that someone who has a passion for the hobby can get a great upgrade for a great deal with this tank.

About the tank:
I have had this tank for about 5 years, but it has been established for about 2 years as I had to break it down to a smaller tank for a few months to move it into my current apartment. The tank has live rock that is pined together with acrylic dowels so the rocks can be taken apart but stay together nicely when assembled. The rock is set up as an island in the middle so it can be viewed from 3 sides. Phosphates undetectable on high accuracy test kit, Nitrates <.5ppm always.

Equipment(Cost New):
75 Gallon corner flow tank($200)
30 long sump with 1/4" glass baffles($75)
Custom built heavy duty stand($150)
Neptune Apex Controller (This thing is awesome, Moniter the tank from anywhere with internet)($549)
Rapid LED diy led lights with dimable drivers and moonlights (controlled through Apex controller)($430)
Auto top off system (controlled through Apex controller)($50)
Jebao DP4 dosing pump (controlled through Apex controller in case of failure it wont overdose)($65)
Mag 9 return Pump($115)
Jebao WP-40 wave pump($75)
Uv Steralizer($75)
Reef Octopus INT150 Protein Skimmer ($240)
Lots of other small extras including Salifert test kits for Ca, Kh, Mg, Nitrate, refractometer and more.

Fish:
Blue Tank (5")
2 Clown Fish (About 5 years old)
2 Green Chromis (About 1 year old)

Coral/Clam:
1 Deresa Clam (About 3 Inches)
1 Blue Milli
3 Red Branching Monti
6 Green Plating Monti
2 Acans
4 Green Candy Canes
1 Large hammer (about 8 inches across)
1 Large Green Toadstool (About 6 inches)
Lots of Kenya Tree, Some big some small
Lots of Green Star Polyps (A whole corner, check out pics)

Anemonoe Expelling Fluid

Hey guys my anemonoe started expelling long gray strings is that normal? It still looks normal it just now has LOTS of long gray strands of what looks like gray slimy stuff. Is that normal?

Valentine’s Day gift.

Hello everybody I have a question for y’all. Little background first.
My lovely wife about 6 months ago was given a wore out pos 1 or maybe 1.5 gal tank at work that she set up and has kept a beta in it on her desk at work. So for Valentine’s Day I’m thinking about upgrading her tank. Now whe. I go to the lfs she’s always looking at those new “GloFish” and though why not. Now finally my question the led lighting that comes with it will it grow real plants? I’ve looked in line and couldn’t find anything out.
And yes I know it’s fresh water and not salt water but was wondering if anyone on here had any experience with it.
Thanks matt

in regards to 3 day blackouts

so i decided to do a 3 day blackout on my tank. my question is feeding the fish. So i peeked into my tank with a flashlight and seen my yellow tang just hiding in the corner. How do you feed the fish? I feel terrible doing this in the first place and its only day one lol. The rest of the fish are all hiding under the rocks. how will they find the food? i think my pumps will just put the food in the filter socks and just add nutrients to the water.

second question. i tried to "search" this and there are over 1k post. I looked up "3 day blackout" yet I only got 13 hits. Im sure there are plenty more than that. also tried to look up "Marine Pure" under reviews and got zero hits. this has been out over a year and has great reviews. why cant i find any reviews in TRT? am i doing something wrong while searching?

Thanks for the help

Aquascape for my 55gal

Ok so I’m finally getting ready to start my aquascape in my tank, either this weekend or next depending on my work, any suggestions or do’s and dont’s. I’ve read about taping your tank off into 9 sections like a tic-tac-toe board and where the lines cross that should be a focal point. Is this a good rule of thumb to go by? I know it’s whatever you want but also don’t want to have to rip it down for long while.

I’ve searched google for different aquascapes and have seen so many there all running together. I’ll have 80+ lbs of dry rock to play with. Most I’m sure will need to be broke down some as there’s only I believe 10 piece. Mostly huge chunks.

Oh and do you use anything to hold the rocks together? I’ve seen this putty stuff at the lfs and read super glue gel works good also but you know how things you read on the internet are.

Does the dry rocks go directly on the glass bottom correct? Then do your sand around it? Or cover the bottom with sand then dry rock on top?

Thanks in advance everyone
Matt

How does live sand affect a new tank?

I know there are a few different ways to start a tank but I like the idea of using a little bit of LR with some base Rock and let it do its thing. It seems the other popular way is just to use a deli shrimp with base Rock and add live rock later if wanted. So how does live sand affect this? Is LR or a shrimp necessary when using live sand? Isn't the sand (or other substrate) basically the first thing to add to a tank? I don't plan on using it DSB, just using sand as my substrate.

Thanks!

Someone know whats happebing here?

Im new to the hobby and unfamiliar with clownfish behaviour.
Its a 20 gal tank. Parameters are great (tested. Water last week) .

Are the clownfish sick? Are they dancing for me? Are they mating?.

They have only been in the tank for 2 weeks.

Thanks in advance :)

BRS Reef Saver Rock

Does BRS Reef Saver rock need to be cycled like other dry rock? It says on their website

“This rock is 100% free of nuisance algae and pests which can cause complete tank shut downs and is guaranteed to be free of apitasia, bubble algae, parasitic isopods, mantis shrimp, acro eating flat worms, little red bugs, fire worms, predatory nudibranchs, pyramidellid snails and other common pests.”

So besides rinsing off in some RO Water, is there a need to cycle this?

Initial cycling without sump

Hey, so I'm about ready to start my tank and am pretty sure I want to use a sump but am not 100% sure yet. I'm wondering if it's fine to start my initial cycle without a sump, and then add one later if I choose. Would it be bad to add a sump (and the additional water required) in the middle of cycling?

Just for reference, it'll be a 30g reef tank with a 10g sump.

Thanks!

New to the group, Hola!

Hi guys I'm new to the group and just wanted to say hi and introuduce myself. I'm Jen. I owned a 75 gallon salt for years but just bought a 120 reef tank. The move was a little brutal on them. I lost 2 sea urchins and 4 fish but somehow my anenomoe is thriving and eating well this morning, I was so happy about that! My mushroom coral seem to be doing ok too. I was hoping to get some suggestions on ways to make the tank quieter? Also does anyone else find a need to use a heater in a reef tank and if so what do they have it set at?

Thank you so much guys!

Salinity Help

I have had my tank up and running for a few weeks now. When I first measured the salinity it was 1.025 (measured with refractometer). I just decided to check my salinity earlier today and to my surprise in was down to 1.020. Should I be concerned I know that is a bit low. If I need to what is the best method of adding salt to the tank to bring the salinity back up. I have a biocube 29.

Reef Tank Noise

Hola guys! We have a 120 gallon Reef Tank that we just bought we were used to owning a 75 Gallon Salt Water with Lace Rock and random fish.
Question #1: I was hoping to get suggestions on how to minimize the noise the pumps make.
Question #2: The previous owner of our tank had no heater in the tank, he said he just turned the lights on at 1 until 7 and it kept temps. Will this work without having a heater in the tank?

Thanks!

Advice on Tank and Fish Transporting

Hi I could use some advice or suggestions on how I can transport my tank and fish. I have a 30 gallon saltwater tank. I have live rock and sand, 2 domino damsels, 1 coral beauty angel, 1 foxface rabbit, 5 emerald crabs in my tank. I will be moving soon and would like to know how i can safely transport everything. I am moving roughly 550 miles away from where I live now and everything I've read says the tank should be moved on first or last trip but obviously that's if you are moving locally and I'm not this will be a one trip affair. Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Neon Green Sinularia Question

Hello All:
I have been having an issue with a neon green sinularia. It is about 2 years old. It always stood tall and proud.

In the last several months I added two more. Plus some toadstools.

I have a 94 gallon corner bow front. It's about 2.5 years old.
Water parameters are normal.

I do 10% WCs at least twice a month. The older of the three sinularias has been looking awful. I moved him lower in the tank. He used to be above the other two, up near the toadstool.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Is he a goner? Pics are attached. Image 3 is the sad guy. You can see the general location of where the sad sinularia was above the smaller of the two happy ones, near the toadstool. But, I don't think they ever touched each other.
Thanks so much.

By the way, I have healty jasmine polyps, GSPs, zoas, anthelias, kenyas and xenias.
Also, I have seen an explosion of brittle stars and fancy brittle stars (the ones with the reddish discs) since using ReefRoids.

Let's see those softies!

Hey folks! I've been noticing a seeming resurgence of interest in keeping a softies system around here, so thought let's show them off all in one place rather than digging through all the separate build threads. Let's show off our passion. Whether you have a current system, or have had one in the past, let's show it off, and make this a picture heavy thread. All the best to all,
Hack

Snowflake eel hasen't eaten in 3 Months...

looking for advice/other peoples experiences. I picked up the eel from a guy when he was about 3 years old and I have had him for 2 years. he is 24" long and had always been a voracious eater, I would feed a few times a week with a mixed diet of silverside, shrimp, clams etc. he has not eaten for short periods before but nothing like this, I have tried fresh mussels and nothing, tried feeding at all periods of the day or night, get the food right up to him and he sinks back into his cave. he still looks good, has not lost any size that i can see. I did add a Harlequin tusk and Rabbit fish to existing tank mates of a Flame angel and Clown but everyone gets along with no issues. not to sure what to do here...

120 gal
1.025
10 ppm nitrate
1300 Mag

Hack - Good idea to see a detailed film twice. It's hard to catch everything the first go-around.

While going through a small strong box filled with my parents' military papers, etc, I found a certificate for meritorious service given to my mother. She was a 1st Lieutenant dietician. I don't remember ever hearing about that, but I think it's pretty cool.

Lots of love and hugs and peace to everyone!
