Looking to upgrade to a 50/60 gallon. Sump or canister?

I'm wanting to upgrade from my 20 gallon tank and am unsure about what kind of filtration to go with. Most of what I read makes me think sumps are better ,but they look complicated. Are canister pumps just as good? Also can I cycle A new tank quickly by just using my aquarium water from my current tank? My ultimate goal would be less water changes with a bigger tank my 20 gallon I do a 20% water change 2x a week. Can I accomplish this with a canister or is a sump a must?
