Bubble Magnus vs Euro reef skimmer

Hi, I'm thinking of getting a used 240 gallon tank (I have a 75 right now). If i get it, the sellers giving me a choice of his Bubble Magnus skimmer or Euro reef skimmer. I'm not sure the exact model of either one. He will send me pics later. Both seem really high quality and effective, but which one is better?

Alkalinity dropping more than normal

Hello guys and good evening. In the past two weeks i’ve been having issues with my alkalinity, i normally keep it at 8-9 dkh but suddenly it started deopping getting at 7 or even 6 dkh( i do water changes every week on my 32 gallon tank and i mix my water using red sea coral pro. ) this change bleached my sps, i was able to bring them back but my alkalinity keeps dropping about 0.5 dkh every day. My magnesium is too high 1480 reading by red sea mg pro test kit. And calcium is always at 460-440 ppm. Is this normal based on that i have 4 sps frags that are growing real quick after I upgraded my lights. Do they use more alkalinity than calcium? I changed all my filter media at once, can this cause swings in my alkalinity? Please share any
experience that you had and for the salt. Do you think i should use another brand with lower

Substrate

I'm upgrading from my nano tank to a 72 gallon setup I got off Craigslist. I need som insights on what substrate to go with. I like sand sifting gobies but I don't like the sand blowing around covering my liverock and coral and I don like the look when it gets dirty. I don't have much luck vacuuming up debris I useualllly just suck up sand and get it all over my corals. So I need advice on this from some people with experience. Also black substrate or white or pink for that matter. Can you have sand sifters with corals? I did see one at my LFS sifting crushed coral. But what about long term? I'm probably going to be asking a whole lota questions here pretty soon. The tank I bought is all taken apart and I've got to figure out about refugeims and protein skimmers and bioballs. I'm just waiting for my husband to brace up the floor.

New Anemone Where?

Hey Everyone,
Lost an awesome long tentacle anemone because i'm dumb and didn't cover my powerheads before my week long trip in San Diego. (They have been in my tank for 3 years thinking they would be fine!)

Any suggestions on a site to find unique anemones. I am not picky the type more the unique or bright color is more what i want.

I also watch bluezoo and livea on a weekly basis.

Yep, it's Wednesday!

Top of the morning to all our TRT Friends that will be stopping by today, and.....HAPPY WEDNESDAY! Sunny and 60.....AGAIN! WOW! Not as wako as I figured this week at work so far......no one came out yesterday, and have two scheduled for today. Though one is a 'repair' and will be going back in. But when a dam begins to trickle you know what's coming......Went to Pop's the other night for his 'fish tank help'......needs a new one. He swears it's leaking though we see no signs of it....well, his money. Jen picked him up a new 55 yesterday, and I stopped after work and switched it over and got it running. He'll be putting his fish back in this morning. Hope all are safe and well, and have WAY COOL in their future,

Help With Zoas Please

Hi,

Attached please find a few pics of a Zoa I have. It shows the same symptoms as a couple of other different Zoas as well.

As you can see some of the polyps are quite vibrant and colorfull, while others are not. It is especially obvious under the blue lights which is how I took the pics.

Thanks for any insights.

Need advice on teenage problem

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right place to discuss this but anyway, I hope I can gain some few advise.
My son recently started this reef tank project at school and now he is glued to this hobby. But it's no longer healthy since he is having some problems in school and spend most of his time in his reef tank. I'm planning to confiscate the tank and have him concentrate school. Would this a good thing to do?

Good morning Tuesday!

Top of the morning TRT Friends, and.....HAPPY TUESDAY! Heading to 60 for a high today.....WORKS FOR ME! I'm being lazy so more Thomas's English muffins to go with our coffee...quick and simple. Found out last night that our daughter is a closet Devils fan......her and her boy friend, Oooooops, FIANCE, sent us a picture from the game. Squirt was proposed to and excepted the other day on the beach. My future son-in-law's name is also Sam......Between the Hack's and Sam's life gets confusing at times around these parts. Hope all are really well, and safe, and all the best,

digital nitrate test

Sup guys!,
So i'm finally getting my tank cleared from my first algae outbreak which lasted a little over a week and was kinda a bit*h to clean up. Anyways I test my tank about once a week for pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate (once before my water change and again after). I check my nitrate 2 times because everything is always 0 beside the nitrate so i like to see what it is at after a water change so make sure its between 2-7 (i keep all softies and 2 clownfish so no need for it to be 0). But considering how my outbreak seemed to came out of no where i'm interested in getting a digital nitrate reader so i can easily check daily. I've done a little looking but haven't found to much for them. Do you guys know about any good quality digital readers for nitrate? Also i plan on getting the hanna phosphate tester cause i'm sure that contributed to the algae out break and its hard to tell when to change the GFO. Thanks for any input and leave a comment on your favorite way to keep your sand bed clear if you'd like.

Sump plumbing planning

I can't drill the tank. Just to get that out of the way. I'm looking for a hob overflow for a 120 to go to the 39" trigger sump. It has 2 or 3 (interchangeable) 1" drains built in and I'd like to keep these. I also would like it to be able to handle more then 10x turnover, simply because I want to have the choice and see what works best for me, high flow or low flow. I was thinking of the eshopps pf-1800 but don't know how to swap the dual 1.5 inch for two or three 1 inch without plenty of fun plumbing. The marine depot of- 1800 only has one 1.5 inch so it might work better?.

I'd like some opinions and just some help, because all the research is getting overwhelming. Thanks

Identify!

We bought this as an electric blue leg hermit crab. But it does not look like any of the other ones we bought. Can anyone help me identify it? I just want to make sure it's safe in our reef tank.

Adding cured live rock to established tank

So I’m gonna purchase a couple pounds of “cured” live rock from a local reefer for my 14 gallon bio cube and was gonna stick it in the filtration for some beneficial bacteria, so I was wondering if the rock is cured already from the other mans sump, could I add it directly to my tank without starting a new cycle if I transport it with water in a bucket?
Thank you!

Reef rock 2.1

What is the fellings about this product? I like how it will give your tank a more established look faster and I do like the purple color without fighting the algae, have read that coralline algae can get out of control. But I don’t like that the purple is only paint over the rock which means you can’t custom cut any to fit your needs. As of right now I’m leaning towards the dry live Fuji rocks from bulk reef supplies any opinions on that? Any idea where the best place to pick up dry rock? Going in a 55gal tank if that makes a difference

Aquarium frame splitting!

I noticed yesterday evening that the center brace frame on my 55 gallon tank has began splitting and there was a slight bow on the front glass. I ran to Home Depot and bought a bar clamp to help stabilize the pressure in the meantime.

I am looking for suggestions on what to do, thanks!

Do I need a sump and skimmer?

Hi, I have a 40 breeder mixed reef with just 2 oscellaris clowns and a sixline wrasse. Bare bottom. Established 5 years. I have 0 TDS RODI water and nitrates are and always are 0. I just gore an led light to be able to grow more corals and of course I'm having algae problems on my rocks and glass now that I have a better light and longer photo. Which is about 10 hous. It's not terrible but I never really had algae growing on my rocks and now it steadily returns in about a week until I take the rock out and scrub it if it doesn't have coral on it.
I've been contemplating adding a 40 breeder sump and a Reef Octopus protein skimmer and just wondering if anyone has an opinion on whether this is likely to improve the situation or not given that my tests are always zero. I currently have a aquamaxx hang on back skimmer which works okay but not great. When I clean it I get about a half a cup of skim eat per day for a few days then it seems to not work so well.

So, what do you think? Is a sump and in sump simmer going to solve my algae issue or will I just do a bunch of work and spend a bunch of money and not be any better off. I currently grow mushrooms green star polyps zoanthids, Duncan coral and a brain coral.
Thanks: beer:

Can't keep nitrates stable

I've had some problems with high nitrates and started tackling it with some Purigen which worked fine but the moment I start feeding my corals with BRS Reef Flakes the nitrates spike and it takes DAYS to lower. First I went from 160ppm to 80, then to 40, then 20 and it settled at around 2-5ppm until I started feeding again. Now I'm back to 50ppm. I don't have a sump and it's not possible for me to add a sump to this system so a refugium is off the table. It's a 40g tank run with a Sun Sun canister filter and one hang on Nano skimmer (rated for up to 35 gallons). The skimmer doesn't really pull out that much gunk. It's a white foam and slightly yellow skimmate so the only main source of filtration is the canister filter and the rocks/substrate. I need a way of controlling nitrates and keeping them stable. Even water changes won't do anything. Actually, I want to stop doing water changes because every time I do a 10% water change my corals seem stressed. I use RO/DI water. Does anyone know what I could do? Maybe bio pellets in the canister filter? Vodka dosing? Zeovit system?

Losing Fish and Scarlet Shrimp

I've had my tank for three years, the water parameters are fine, but I lost four out of six fish in about three weeks, and my Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp. I have two fish left but don't have high hopes for them.

The shrimp stopped eating and "grooming" and roaming the tank. She was three years old, but I knew she wasn't well. She died in two days.

There is nothing in their eyes, mouth on their scales or fins (that I can see). One day they're behaving normally, eating well, and the next they're dead. The only one I could tell was very ill was my Six Line Wrasse, who was swimming well one day and the next was discolored and swimming weakly. The next day it was dead.

I realize no one can diagnose what's happening, but can someone give me a few pointers on what to look for? What fish diseases are there that can't be seen? ANY ideas at all?

The only thing I've done differently just prior to the deaths is I added new sand to the tank - CaribSea Special Grade live sand - the kind I've used since I had the tank. About a week later the first death occurred.

I have a clownfish and a diamond goby now. Today, they seem perfectly normal in their appearance, behavior and eating habits.

reef salt

Hey guys!
So my tank is almost 4 months old now and has been doing great. Fish are doing amazing and coral look super. I am getting down to the last of my instant ocean reef crystals and looking for some input. I will probably go with the same salt because it has been working well for me, but what salts do you guys use and what do you like about it. Also if anyone has used the instant ocean have you seen any problems over a long period of time.
thanks for the feed back

Xr-15 Radeon light strong enough

Hello is a Xr-15 Radeon light strong enough for rock flower anemones and coral in a 60 gallon tank?

Novembers last Sunday

Good morning TRT Friends, and...HAPPY SUNDAY! A sunny, and in the 50's one. Tip toeing and typing in the dark around all the snoring. Coffee is ready, and breakfast will follow when the snoring stops.......eggs, maple sausages, home fries with onions of course, and toast and jellies. No plans for the day other than 'something outside' taking advantage of the waning nice days before winter shows up eventually around here. Cape May Zoo just came to mind with a picnic....hmmmmmm, got to throw that one on the table for consideration. Hope all are good, with lots of smiles and laughter ahead. All the best,

Getting Back Into the Hobby

Been out of the hobby for many years. Starting a 55 gallon reef. Brushing up on all the knowlege lost. Many questions to come im sure.

Fittings, pipes, and tubing

I've been looking for colored tubing, fittings, and pipes for the plumbing in my 120 with an emerald trigger sump. I was looking at green pvc pipe from bulk reef supply, savco plastics has black fittings. I couldn't find green tubing to match so I don't have to fully hard plumb my return. If someone could point me in the right direction for emerald green tubing I would be grateful. It needs to be able to fit a vectra M1 pump (3/4 in schedule 40).

Help Identifying this

I thought this may have been aiptasia but the stalk seems a bit to fat and it does not suck in or or close up at all when it is touched. The foot or stalk is about 1/4'' tall and the head is about the size of a dime. Also has little white balls on the end of the tentacles. It just kinda showed up one day.

what size of a return pump do i need?

"spec's" 55gal saltwater with a 10gal sump cascade 1000 canister filter w/media also doubles as my return pump 3/4" line in and out. gravity syphon.
home made weir made out of a 4" pipe cut in half. the return line is 3/4" to 1/2" at spray bar "not working like I thought on the spray bar"(also homemade). and a bakpak skimmer
the cascade works, but false every other day or so. It keeps getting air pockets and pumps a ton of micro bubbles into the tank. its pulling the bubbles I think from the sump. I don't see any leaks. so I need to have a sump pump solely doing the work load.

Please help. My candy looks dying.

Hello,
I have 20 gallon nano tank with 10 gallon sump. My nitrate was really high but now looks getting better. Yesterday was 20-40. My frogspwawn getting open but got the problem with candy. I have two kinds of candies. One looks okay but losing the color. However, other looks bad. I am not sure but looks some kind of hitchhiker on their body and can see the bones. Is that possible to save it or almost die?

I have two clown fishes, 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 fire shrimp, 1 emerald crab and bunch of snails and hermits at the main. At the sump one small goby and pistol shrimp. Tank over a year and fully cycled. Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, ph 7.8(can not remember correctly). Anyway except candy other corals looks good. Could you tell me what is the problem?

Help with lighting for gifted lps +/- future corals

Hello all,
I was gifted a hammer coral frag and a duncan coral frag. They are tiny, maybe 2-3 inch diameter. I have 0 expereince with corals and so far they are just in my small QT tank. I have them under some LEDs, so far they are open and respond well to target feeding etc but its only been 2 weeks. (cant upload the pics, files too big, working on it). I tried to research a ton about lighting but honestly I just dont understand watts to lumens and depth and kelvins and actinic vs red vs daylight etc. Help?!

My specific question is:

These will eventually move to my 220g display. Its 30 inches tall and 6 feet long and 2 feet wide. What kind of light do I need to make everything happy all the way down? (Its fish, live rock, sand bed, inverts, and some macro algaes planted). I would like to consider more corals in the future. So far the macros in the sand bed seem happy w the lighting but its just 2 marineland led lights like this (picture) and a similar coralife one.

i dont feel like its sufficient for corals? Or is it? What lights would be good for corals and for the whole tank over all that are energy efficient and not completley absurdly priced? Thank you!!!

Is it safe to get other fish if so any recommendations? And any other helpful information you may have learned would be great!

Sick Tomini Tang

Can anyone identify this disease so I know how to properly treat it. He started off looking like this about two weeks after we got him, but now all those areas that were discolored are light reddish. He appears to be acting normal mostly. My clownfish now has a weird mark on his back and I'm worried. Never had any issues ever with any diseases etc.

Happy Thanksgiving Thursday!

Good morning TRT Friends, and.....HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Hope everyone is safe and enjoying this day of Thanks giving surrounded by loved ones. I am terrible at taking advantage of days off and sleeping in......went to bed around 12:30 and am up by 6:00am.....just doesn't sound right. Yet, here I am....wide awake. The rest of my Family isn't afflicted by this alignment and are snoring nicely. Eventually there'll be Buttermilk waffles and maple sausages to go with our coffee.....EVENTUALLY! But coffee is awake. We'll be dinning with our Family and Friends around 4:00 this afternoon, so have a nice relaxing pace today to prepare our meal. Hope all are so far above groovy they're giggling about it....HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Cloudy water

Hi all.
I have a 94 gallon corner now front with a sump, UV and Venturi slimmer. About 40 pounds of LR

2 cleaners
About 25 snails
5 peppermints
1 anthias
1 kole tang
5 azure tails
3 blue green chromis
2 clowns
Assorted softies

My water has been really cloudy. The livestock seems fine but my trumpet seems to be dying.
Parameters are normal but my nitrate is a little high around 20. But it always is.

I’ve been doing water changes with my RD/DI water.
I recently vacuumed out my sump which kicked up a lot of crap.

Some places say it’s a bloom or something. I have that red slime antibiotic (yellow powder) that has worked. But I don’t have slime right now. I do have algae on the rocks and sand. Not crazy but some. None on the glass though.

Some places say all the water changes in the world won’t help until the bacteria equalizes.

Any ideas before I toss the tank to the curb?

It’s three years old by the way.
Thanks!

Question About Quarantining

Hello Everyone,
I'm new to keeping saltwater fish and I want to make sure I'm doing everything correctly. Two weeks ago I put a yellow eyed kole tang in quarantine and I'm getting different information about how long to keep him there.
My LFS said that two week is enough, I've also been told four and eight weeks. So far in the two week he's been in quarantine, I haven't seen any signs of disease.
What amount of time is appropriate to quarantine before I can safely put him in my tank?

Thanks in advance for your help.
