Hey guys,
I am having an issue with my new green bubble tip anemone. I purchased this anemone 12 days ago and until a few hours ago it seemed to be doing very well. The first night I dripped it for about an hour and a half and then gently planted it on a rock. That night, it moved to a location on the opposite side of the tank. The issue is that the spot it decided to stick to was on the under side of one of my rocks in a cove. It would extend randomly throughout the day and shrink periodically as well. Over the past few days I was experiencing a dip in my PH dropping to 8.0. Last night I added PH buffer and again this morning. (I didn't want to raise the PH too fast and shock my tank.) This morning the anemone was poking out of the rock and was inflated and appears to be healthy but about 5 hours later things appeared to take a turn.
I noticed that the anemone was shrunken in a odd way on the underside of the rock and I could see it's oral disk and it appeared open. After about an hour, it's foot released and that is when I took action. I had been weary of it lacking light due to hiding under the rock so I took that opportunity to move it. I placed it mid range in my tank on a rock that gets clear lighting and it immediately attached it's foot. Over a couple of hours the tentacles inflated more and the mouth began to close. My maroon clown fish that has been hosting it eventually found it in the tank. I have been monitoring it for hours and it did at one point loosen it's grip on the rock only to regain hold on its own. Just trying to give all of the information I can here. I have a reef octopus bh-1000 HOB protein skimmer scheduled to arrive Monday (until 12 days ago I did not have fish in my tank and nitrates maintain 0.) My question is weather or not I should continue to observe, turn off powerheads, remove completely or what else (if anything) should I do?
Admittedly, I should have waited to add this anemone to my tank as it is still young but my water parameters have not budged and I am on top of testing nearly every day. Also, this anemone was hosted by the maroon clown in the fish store and I felt they should stay together. I'm sure I'll catch some flack since my tank isn't a year old but I figure maintaining water parameters and water changes when needed would do the trick to maintain consistency. Tank information and water parameters are below.
75 gallon tank
2 black box full spectrum 180w lights (12 inches from top)
1 hydor 600 pointed at surface/ front
1 hydor 1150 aimed at rock formation/ back
Aquatop cf400 canister filter
RO water used
Temperature: 79°F
Ammonia: 0
Nitrate: 0
Nitrate: 0
PH: 8.1-8.3 (depending on time of day)
Phosphate: 0
Alkalinity: 11
Calcium 440-450
Image with mouth open was directly after moving. Image with clown hosted was 3-3.5 hours later. Is it splitting?
