Hi, I have a 90 gallon saltwater aquarium for about 8 years. It was moved about 2 years ago and continued working fine at previous address. I moved here about 3 months ago and for the first 2 months it was fine. Below are quick facts:
-90 gallon pre-drilled 3/4" return
-Durso overflow system
-Sump underneath with 1 drain line (flex hose, believe 1.25")
-Submersible pump that does 1300 GPH (No head assuming)
-Protein skimmer in sump
-Phosphate reactor in sump
-1 Sailfin tang about 8 inches
-1 blue tang about 7 inches
-3 engineer gobies (about 9 inches each)
-2 small clowns
-several mushroom corals
-PH is about 8
-nitrates around 80
The system was pretty quiet all this time until about a month ago. It is making a loud trickling sound intermittently in the drain line. I noticed the water in the overflow was fluctuating as I was watching it run. It would go down about an inch, then back up, and continue. I notice within 10 minutes of feeding the fish their pellet food the drain gets very loud again and will continue like this for several hours, then it settles down and is more bearable.
I shortened the drain line going to the sump, it was previously about 3 inches under the water level in the sump, so now is about 1 inch above where the drain goes in to sump.
I've read forums that the pump could be pumping too much and others that said it could be pumping too little, so I am not sure where to start really. Also read that the drain line should not have more than about half filled with water flowing through. I don't want to reduce the flow too much as I know the corals and such need it. But, I also have 2 pumps inside the tank creating movement as well.
I am just not sure why it's sounding so loud, I could hear the pumps and occasional sounds in the past but not this loud. It almost sounds like it is getting clogged or something somewhere and getting backed up.
I took apart the durso and appears to be fine, I also checked that the air hole in top of durso not clogged or anything. So I am not sure what else to check at this point, but again it gets about 3 times louder as soon as put any food in there and wont settle down for several hours.
Looking for some advice on what else I can check...Thanks..
