55 gal column vs 40 breeder?

Greetings all. Just recently acquired a full, running semi reef setup. Its a 30" x 18" x 25" 55 gallon tank with matching stand. It came with a 36" 6 bulb t5 fixture w/ led moon lights, a canister filter, 50ish pounds of live rock, play sand? substrate (shallow), bonded clownfish pair, blue damsel, Bali jewfish, tux urchin, brittle star, and a awesome fu man chu lion, on top of a CUC that could probably use replenishing (hermits and snails). There are several rocks with green mushrooms, and a small cluster of GSP that's not so green (too much white, not enough actinic I think).

The timing on this came in perfect, as I had a 40 breeder I was planning to set up as a reef. I have a box built to turn into a plenum or rugf that would be fed clean water, as not to trap unnecessary waste under the bed, and to keep it suspended for filtration. This is my fist tank back into salt, as a few years ago (10ish) I had a 75g w/ LR, fish, and a few "easy" corals.

I am wondering if the added 6" foot print and extra length, along with lesser depth of the 40 breeder, may be more beneficial than trying to reach through 25" of water for lower corals, and the fixture fits it better? The 55gal would probably be used as a remote tank to increase volume, and adding more LR. Between the LR, keeping 20ish gallons of the old water, not cleaning the canister to maintain bacteria, and slowly topping the tank with clean water, I have (seemingly) managed to avoid a "mini cycle" from the transport of the tank.

Any thoughts or ideas? I have a retro fit 4 bulb 55w PC that could be added the the new tank. I will be building a new stand to accommodate the original and new tank. On a good note, I have a habit of researching everything, and avoided an impulse buy of a pencil urchin. Yikes!
