Canister filter into sump?

Hi, so I need feedback on converting my fluvial 405 canister filter into a sump, but not the way your thinking. Tank is not drilled it will cost around $300 to get hob overflow return pump and extras, what makes no sense is that the canister takes water in and out of the tank, so could I use it? My plan is to drill holes into the side of the canister ( no media will be in it or should I )? and put this is in a 40g breeder tank bellow my tank, So will this work? Im just adding volume to the canister right?, so the water goes in the canister, the canister is actually in the sump and water flows through holes, sump will kind of be like an extensions of the canister. For example imagine putting a filled water bottle at the bottom of a pool, the water bottle has holes in it so the water can pass in and out. The water bottle is the canister filter allowing water in the sump to pass through and get pumped into the tank. The idea sounds messy but I drew it out and seems not to bad. Im just worried about flow in the sump and getting water to move since intake and outtake will be in same spot, also if the canister will float? And if the canister walls can support the water pressure even after being drilled into. Im skeptical about this, but won't hurt to ask others opinions thanks!:jester:
