GFO = Phosguard?

Just want to confirm everything I'm using. Was given the advice from the LFS to use Phosguard to lower my Phosphates. I have a 45g corner, and initially my Phosphates were 3.0 about a month ago. I used the one that says it's good for 30gal and it dropped down to 1.0.

However it hasn't gone down in the last 2 weeks. So today I changed out the bag and I am hoping this will get my phosphates down to zero. I was told my phosphates should be at zero.

Also first my alk was super low, I dosed, now it's at 11.4 ( a bit high), I stopped dosing that, then my magnesium was low so I dosed with that, now it's right at 1300 now, so I stopped dosing that.

So with what's going on I'm going to do a 10% WC every other day and see how that works.

I guess I'm just making sure I'm doing the right thing. I don't see any problems in my tank, well, I did just lose a small hermit crab, but that's the only thing I've seen. All of my fish seem very active, and my corals are all colorful and the polyps seem to be opening up fully everyday.

Any other suggestions, or am I on track here?

I do need a test kit, someone mentioned the Red Sea kit was a good kit to get. I've been letting my LFS do all of my testing for me. Only question with the kits are all of them like the API as far as bouncing the results off of a color code?
